5 February 2015: World - Severe Weather Events SPAIN USA ITALY • Snowfall, winds and low temperatures affected northeastern USA, after the winter storm of the last week, causing again power outages and traffic disruption on 1-3 February. • Snowfall and low temperatures may still affect Northern Maine in the next 24 h. • Rain, snowfall low temperatures are affecting several areas of central and northern Spain, causing floods and landslides, and may continue for the next 24 h. • Media reported two people killed, and floods due to the overflow of the river Ebro in Navarra, Burgos and Zaragoza. The Copernicus Emergency Management Service has been activated on 2 February. Red alert for ice and snow (MeteoAlarm) is in effect in Emilia Romagna and Piemonte. • JRC calculations indicate a max. storm surge of the order of 0.9 m in the coastal area near Ravenna (Emilia Romagna) and of 0.8 m in the area near Venice (Veneto) on 6 February at 1.00 UTC. • As of 5 February, media reported traffic disruption in northern Italy due to heavy snowfall, and rivers overflow in central Italy. As of 4 February, there were 2 400 families affected. Media reported several homes damaged and one person missing due to floods and ten people killed by lightning. • In the next 48 h thunderstorms may affect several areas of Zimbabwe. The probability of flash flooding is high. 1 Dead 10 Dead ALBANIA: • Heavy rain and floods affected the southern regions of Gjirokastra, Fier, Vlore, Berat und Elbasan. • At least 1 600 families affected, and 17 000 ha of land flooded. BULGARIA: • Heavy rains and strong winds affected several areas of Bulgaria on 1-4 February, killing four people, damaging several houses and causing power outages. GREECE • Several regions were affected in Greece by heavy rains and floods. • The Copernicus Emergency Management Service was activated by the Greek General Secretariat for Civil Protection, for the area of Epirus on 2 February. The former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia • Floods affected the eastern region of the country over 31 January – 3 February. According to national authorities 170 000 people are affected TURKEY • Snowfall, rains and winds affected several regions of Turkey in the last few days, killing eight people, damaging several houses and roads. In the province of Edirne, 620 people were forced to evacuate their homes due to the rivers overflow. 69 Dead (CHEDZA) Indian Ocean Legend Madagascar • Heavy rains affected Madagascar in the last few days, causing floods. Media reported one dead, three people injured and more than 2 000 people affected in central Madagascar. Tropical Storm CHEDZA affected Madagascar on 16-17 January, killing at least 69 people and affecting another 157 000 (as of 1 February, Government report). • In the next 24 h more heavy rain may affect central and southern areas.
