The three collaborating organizations are proud to offer a high quality visual arts experience that provides an important exhibit opportunity for students, and leadership opportunities for teachers. Looking at the stacks of paper and my list (started every Monday with leftovers from the week before, or the week before that) on a yellow legal pad, I am very tempted to go check the mailbox and hope that it holds rescue for me. February is a month when we plan, prep and work out the details for events to come. The Gallery Committee has moved the MAAC show up a notch in the schedule and that means that judges, rules and particulars need to be sorted out two months earlier than usual. Our role as a partner in the Student Art shows continues to evolve as has our partnership with the LEGO Build Your Way Around Town. We have new ideas and programs in the works; some of the existing programs are changing. It takes time to think things through and the paperwork stays on my desktop until I’m confident it can disappear into an appropriate file. Oh, look—a new Shore Magazine has arrived in the lobby— guess I’ll make a cup of tea and browse through it! Happy Valentine’s Day! Ali Hansen Executive Director “Volunteers Needed Grand Rapids Cottage and Lakefront Show We are looking for volunteers for our booth at the Cottage and Lakefront Living Show in Grand Rapids, March 27 – 29. Please contact Cindy at [email protected] for more information Meet the Box Factory Board Laura Goos, President Work Experience: Senior Human Resources Manager, Whirlpool Corporation (2005 – present) Human Resources Manager, Cascade Engineering, Inc. – Grand Rapids, MI (1995 – 2005) Education: Michigan State University; Bachelors of Arts, Employee Relations Experiences with the BAG/Box Factory for the ARTS When I moved back to my hometown of St. Joseph in 2006 with my husband Ron, I was looking for a writer’s group. Since the fall of 2007, I have been a proud member of the Box Factory for the Arts. I became more involved with volunteering at the Box Factory. I worked the front desk a few times and then eventually was asked to lead the Personnel committee. From there, I became a Director on the Board in 2013. While I love volunteering as a member of the Board, my greatest pleasure is when I am at our events and, selfishly, at Night Writers. The Box Factory has become my home away from home at times when I just need to get away and write – I go to my 3rd Floor Studio on Writers (plus one Photographer) Row. Sometimes my daughter, Emma joins me in my studio and we share our passion of writing. What do you feel you bring to the board...your point of view, professional experiences, etc. Primarily, I believe my professional experiences in Human Resources, Conflict Resolution, Risk Management and Change Management make me an asset to the Box Factory. As our small organization grows, we need to look ahead and plan for any and all possibilities and prepare our members for them. This is one of my specialties. Currently, we are working on Strategic Planning and long term plans that will continue to provide our members with a nurturing place for their Art and Creativity. Anthony Schaller, VicePresident –Work Experience: Owner of Schaller Gallery What am I currently doing? First and foremost: running the gallery. The gallery has a little foot print here in St Joseph but has a major internet presence; we work with clients all over the globe. The gallery is considered one of the top functional ceramics galleries in North America. Aside from the gallery- I'm off to Halifax, Nova Scotia at the invitation of the Canadian Department of Arts and Culture to lecture, consult and critique in early February at the Craft Alliance Expo. In May I'll be going to Tall Hisban in Jordan at the invitation of Bonn University, the Nubulsi Institute of Cultural Heritage and the Jordanian Department of Commerce to consult and conduct research. Tall Hisban is an archeological site that will be developing a Museum, History and Culture Education program, and other tourism facilities; restaurant, hotel, etc. My main focus will be on developing a pottery workshop and education program. I have some lectures and workshops at universities and art centers scheduled throughout the year. How did you become involve at the Box Factory for the Arts? My recent involvement with the Box Factory started when I rented a studio a few years ago. Shortly after that, I was nominated to run for a seat on the board by Lynne Tann and Rebecca Hungerford. Share something fun about yourself that few people know about. Things about me that most people don't know about...I'm obsessed with my cats, Oscar and Addie, but then most people already know that. I'm interested in, study and go on vacations to further my knowledge of geology. I'm also quite interested in astrophysics and quantum mechanics, as you can't understand the big picture without understanding the smallest of the small. Lastly, I love to cook.
