Numbering 800,000 strong in 2014, we Catholics have come this far by faith. The challenges before us appear formidable, indeed mountain-like, but the faithful of our Diocese have always responded to the challenge of the Gospel through their generosity in many ways. They have always believed that faith is greater than the mountain. Fiscally we have been prudent with wise management of our resources. Proactively, as we seek to nurture new seeds of faith in our church through vital and dynamic programs and services, we must secure additional resources that will work for us in supporting our efforts. Secure endowments have long been mainstays of wealth for universities and hospitals, generating perpetual restricted income, funding specific programs and services. Like the tiniest mustard seed, which grows into the largest of plants, diocesan restricted endowments will nurture a multitude of lives through specific ministries that foster strong faith by strengthening our parishes and schools,; forming and supporting our seminarians and clergy, growing our lay formational and educational programs and broadening our social services. We are seeking to raise a minimum of $75 million to facilitate not only keeping the faith, but living, professing, witnessing and spreading it. Although the goal is ambitious, we remain confident that it can be achieved. Jesus said “if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to the mountain, ‘move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you.” Please remember our sick: Anne Fleming, James Waggner, Anna Clarke, Doris Madelyn Blackwell, Frances Regan, Sheila Lillis, Joseph Bozza, Henry Schroeder, Kevin & Susan Walters, Tom Murphy, Donna DeSolis, Krystal Rossi, Dr. Paul Miguez, Baby Max Pogers, John P. One of the very vivid memories that I have of those days is the sound of the bells on Sunday morning. These were not electronic bells: these were those massive old bells with a different person hanging at the end of each rope reaching up to the individual massive bronze domes, that rang out thunderously across the city. Today I live in a house across the road from St. Catharine Church where I am constantly called to prayer throughout the day by the bells ringing out across the lake. To me there is something very comforting about that sound. Sometimes it transports me back across the years to when I was sixteen years old. The sound of those bells remind me of the words of the poet Longfellow, "for bells are the voice of the Church; they have tones that touch and search, the hearts of young and old, one sound to all..." The bells of St. Catharine say, more eloquently than we can ever hope to do so: "come and hear what God has to say. Come to the table, to the prayers and the word: Come and find forgiveness" The catalyst for my musing about bells and especially the messages they proclaim, was that this week I picked up a book from Msgr. Luebking's library called "Live to Regret". It is a mystery story set in Spring Lake. Much of the action occurs around the Lake itself, some of the action happens in the rectory, and the climax of the story culminates in the chapel of the Sacred Heart in St. Catharine Church, beneath which lies the body of Martin Maloney's 18 year old daughter Catharine. In the book the young girl's name is changed to Brigid, but there is no escaping that this is about St. Catharine's. The book is also about the struggle to find forgiveness when the person who alone has the power to forgive is suddenly taken by death, leaving the one 3 513 St. Catharine—St. Margaret Parish Family who needs forgiveness wandering in an aimless desert of despair and self recrimination. In the story, this journey ends in St. Catharine Church, when the main character in the story finds himself sitting in a pew talking to the pastor of the parish, and observing: "Forgiveness was what this case was all about. People dying for want of it. People crushed under forgiveness they never used. I spoke to a nun about it the other day. She's related to the town (Spring Lake) and to this church. She has a theory about St. Brigid's (St Catharine's), that it's a storehouse of forgiveness. People stock it with forgiveness they can't deliver, and sinners come after it because they can't live otherwise." For now, at least, the sound of the bells will strike another chord for me. Fr Harry Cullen World Meeting of Families The World Meeting of Families is the largest Catholic gathering of families. It is held every three years and is sponsored by the Holy See's Pontifical council for the Family. A theme is chosen that enlivens and energizes the event while adding great depth of meaning to our understanding of families. - Philadelphia 2015 is “LOVE is Our Mission: The Family fully alive,” emphasizing the impact of the love and life of families on our society. During the days and weeks of penance that lie ahead --- from Ash Wednesday, February 18th until Holy Thursday, April 2nd --- it is with YOU, Lord, with YOU we fast and pray. The model Jesus gave us for “these forty days” was his own experience of the desert and the temptations that followed him there where he encountered Satan face to face. And yet, Jesus, there in the desert --- alone, fasting and in intense prayer --- beat back the devil and triumphed over temptation, as strong and as unrelenting as it was throughout those forty days. We enter the desert of Lent like Jesus, led by the Holy Spirit, to face our devils, our temptations head on. But we are not alone. “With YOU we fast and pray” is our song. The Lord Jesus Christ is with us. And so, too, is the Church, the entire community of faith observing Lent. “With YOU, too, we fast and pray.” Here is what the Catholic Church in the United States asks of us as baptized Catholics: 1. The days of fast (only one full meal) and abstinence (no meat) are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. 2. All other Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence (no meat). Those between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast (only one full meal) as above. From the age of 14, people are also obliged to abstain (no meat: this obligation prohibits the eating of meat, but not eggs, milk products or condiments of any kind, even though made from animal fat). The obligation to observe the laws of fast and abstinence is a serious one for Catholics. Failure to observe one penitential day in itself is not considered a serious sin. It is the failure to observe any penitential days at all, or a substantial number of days, which must be considered serious. The obligation, the privilege really, of receiving the Eucharist at least once a year --- often called “Easter duty” --for those in the state of grace should still be fulfilled during the period from the First Sunday of Lent, February 22nd to Trinity Sunday, May 31st. However, the Church’s law does permit this precept to be fulfilled at another time during the year when there is a just cause. I want to encourage Catholics to get to confession and to make use of the sacrifices and traditions that have always been part of our Lenten practices in the Church. We do, indeed, fast and pray with the Lord Jesus and with our fellow Catholics. May this Lent be a time of penance, grace and joy for us all. Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend David M. O’Connell, C.M. Parish Pastoral Council VOCATION PRAYER: The council held it second meeting on January 24. A discussion focused on the Diocesan publication “Led by the Spirit” as a framework to help guide the council in moving forward. The main focus of the discussion was the need to reach out to the parish and through investigation and enquiry to determine and prioritize the needs of the parish. The council discussed the option of instituting a questionnaire to the members of the parish to enlist their concerns and recommendations. The council also discussed and decided to act on the initiative of consulting with the many different ministries and organizations that already exist within the parish. To this end, members of the council will pair up and visit with, and consult with each group during one of their regularly scheduled meetings, listen to their needs and concerns, remind them of the mission and vision of the parish, and report back to the council. A younger member of the council recommended that we get input from students in the CCD program related to scheduling of CCD classes and other issues. The council decided to meet once a month formally, on the last Saturday of the month, for two hours. Dear God, bless our family life and nurture us with your love and care. Help us to be attentive to the needs of one another. Guide us to reach beyond our home in service to others. We ask you to open the hearts of our children to hear your voice, to know their true vocation, and to find true happiness in you. We affirm our concern for all members of the Mystical Body of Christ everywhere and particularly those who require assistance. And always, we seek to know and love God and to love our neighbor as Jesus taught us.” 9 513 St. Catharine—St. Margaret Parish Family
