2011-2012 ANNUAL REPORT creating smiles. inspiring hope. 2012 A WORD FROM GREG ANDERSON FOUNDER & CEO If I were to choose one word to sum up the work of Children’s Cancer Recovery Foundation over the last year, it would be “inspired.” I’m inspired by the work CCRF is doing in the United States and around the world. Growing the signature Bear-Able Gift Bags program to reach more children while they are in treatment than ever before is a huge accomplishment. It is more than toys, games and crafts we are giving. It’s hope—a gift with a lift to the spirit. And that inspires healing. I’m inspired by the families we have helped through our Helping Hands Fund. Childhood cancer can be financially crippling. When we are able to pay the rent or the utilities, we ease the burden of the entire family unit. Letter after letter we receive proves the very real needs we are meeting. And that is inspiring. I’m inspired by the letters and photos we receive from the children who take advantage of our post-treatment camp scholarships. It’s not only outdoor camps but also music camps, computer camps, art camps, dance, acting and more. One letter said it best, “I’m done with treatment. Now I can get back to being a kid.” I’m inspired by our gifts of medicine and medical equipment to hospital and clinic partners in developing countries. We are fulfilling our mission mandate in ways I never imagined possible. We bring hope and healing to tens-ofthousands of cancer patients struggling with endemic poverty who are otherwise without even the most basic oncology care. I’m inspired by CCRF staff. Their tireless efforts to help those in need make it all happen. They work hard because they know that what they do has significant purpose, so they accomplish their missions with excellence. 2 | 2011-2012 ANNUAL REPORT I’m also inspired by the generous investment of time and resources from individuals, corporations and foundations who strongly believe in our work around the world. This year, CCRF received more grants than any time in its history. As a result, we have been able to implement projects that improve life for thousands of children and their families. Most of all, I am inspired by those who stand with us to support children—some who do so sacrificially. These are tough times for many, but CCRF partners understand that those children and families who are going through the struggles of cancer need our prayers and support. Thank you for your willingness to sacrifice to make life better for these deserving people. I am inspired that in 2012 CCRF is the recipient of the Independent Charities of America’s 5-star Best in America Award now for the sixth consecutive year. That means we can all be assured that CCRF is effective, accountable and transparent in all its actions to help children and families around the world. Yes, inspired is the word. 2012 was a great year. On behalf of the Board of Directors, I thank CCRF supporters, friends and staff for a very inspiring year. Very truly yours, ARTHUR GRANITO CPA Dear friend, One of the most significant services provided by Children’s Cancer Recovery Foundation (CCRF) is international medical relief. Over the past eight years, CCRF has delivered millions of dollars of medicines and medical equipment to people in endemic poverty in Honduras, Ghana, Vietnam, Guatemala, Kenya, Liberia and the Philippines. This important mission has changed the lives of entire communities. CCRF seeks gifts of medicines and medical equipment from pharmaceutical and medical equipment manufacturers located here in the United States. These medicines are then given to our incountry hospital partners. In turn, the gifts are used to diagnose and treat sick and needy persons, most often without cost, people who would not have received medical care without our assistance. There are three reasons why CCRF is a leader in international medical relief: 1. Mission Mandate. In the by-laws of CCRF is language regarding our purpose which states, “. . . to help, without geographical restrictions, cancer patients in need.” This means our charter demands that we seek out cancer patients, worldwide, who are in need or at risk and provide them with appropriate assistance—physical, psychological and spiritual. 2. Program Services. CCRF fulfills this mission mandate by underwriting programs that include patient and family emergency financial needs, gifts to support the psychological and spiritual recovery of pediatric cancer patients as well as offering educational materials that teach cancer prevention and survival principles. In addition, CCRF places gifts of medicines and medical equipment with select pre-qualified organizations, typically Christian missions in developing countries, who will in turn give them to cancer patients with demonstrated needs. These programs represent the core of our work. CCRF exists to deliver these services. 3. Humanitarian Value. Providing such program services, including relevant non-cash gifts, demonstrates our organization’s commitment to human values, human welfare and service to those cancer patients in endemic poverty without regard to the recipient’s race, creed, or nationality. On behalf of the Board of Directors, I thank you for your belief in and support of this important work. Arthur J. Granito, CPA, Trustee Children’s Cancer Recovery Foundation | 3 DOUGLAS RUNKLE PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD Cancer is indiscriminate; it can strike anyone, anywhere, at any time. It is particularly devastating when the diagnosis involves a child. We focus on improving the mental, social and emotional well-being of these families while helping to minimize the devastation that cancer can cause. As you read our annual report, you will see the firsthand accounts of how your support makes a difference in the lives of these children and families. Our programs are specifically tailored to meet their needs. We deliver our services through an extensive national network of social workers and child life specialists. This national footprint allows us to make a difference in communities large and small, providing assistance wherever needed. This year we have been able to assist more than 63,000 children and families through our gift, financial and international aid programs. As the incidence of childhood cancer and survival rates continue to grow, so does the need for our programs. It is all because of you, our supporters that we can deliver these programs. Strong stewardship of each donation is made possible by our Board; which is comprised of seasoned financial and marketing professionals along with cancer survivors. We meet on a quarterly basis to review financial and program results, set vision and ensure the long-term health of the organization. To that end, we have given even larger program mandates for 2013 while making sure a six month operating reserve is in place. It is an honor to serve these brave children and families. While we measure our successes through the number of children and families served each year, we know the intangible benefits are invaluable. I thank you for joining us in creating smiles, inspiring hope and helping these children rediscover their childhood. Sincerely, President of the Board 4 | 2011-2012 ANNUAL REPORT BOARD OF DIRECTORS Children’s Cancer Recovery Foundation is governed by a 5-member Board of Directors. Directors are elected from a variety of backgrounds and professional disciplines. Each Director brings wisdom, insight, diverse perspectives and a wealth of experience to the Boardroom. The Board’s shared dedication to our mission and strong commitment to honoring our donors’ intent is essential to the successful governance of the Foundation. Directors meet quarterly. The Board governs in strict accordance with the Foundation’s bylaws and policies, always adhering to the AICPA’s Generally Accepted Accounting Principles. Each year the Board engages an independent outside auditor to evaluate performance, both financial and programmatic, against AICPA Generally Accepted Auditing Standards. The end result is to facilitate the successful pursuit of our mission to help pediatric patients and families going through childhood cancer. Douglas Runkle President Timothy Grunstra Treasurer, Trustee Arthur Granito Secretary, Trustee Jessica Schaefer Trustee Children’s Cancer Recovery Foundation | 5 PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS BEAR-ABLE GIFT PROGRAM Cancer is depressing to both children and their families. Through generous donations of gifts, the Foundation provides many of the things to hospitals that children and teens love – board games, hand-held games, dolls, cards, coloring books, crayons, markers, cars, trucks, puzzles, stuffed animals… all sorts of gifts that make them smile and take their minds off cancer treatment. This year, the Foundation shipped gifts and toys to 13,325 children battling cancer. HOW YOUR GIFTS HELP! Your help is very much appreciated! Thank you so much! The Faulkner’s Mrs. Foreman Thank you! Children’s Cancer Recovery Foundation | 7 CAMP SCHOLARSHIP Cancer isolates a child from the simple joys of their childhood; play, laughter and the wonderment of life. Through our camp scholarship program, those in treatment can be free to be a child – just one of the gang! Children’s Cancer Recovery Foundation provided $6,735 in scholarship assistance last year, helping children to experience therapeutic riding, music, art, skiing and other types of camps and activities. HOW YOUR GIFTS HELP! Melinda Marchiano Awarded a Camp Scholarship to attend The PULSE Summer LA Tour 2010 Melinda is a 15-year old girl diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma on December 17, 2007. She experienced a great deal of trauma during her treatment as she had great sensitivity to her medications which led to extreme suffering. When her treatment was completed, she still experienced a year of fatigue and depression. Through it all, Melinda continued to fight and persevere. She has written a book about her experience which is now being prepared for its second publishing. She is also continuing to pursue dancing which is her passion. Melinda 15 “I want to express our sincere thanks to Children’s Cancer Recovery Foundation for your dearly appreciated support for Melinda to attend the PULSE dance tour this summer. Dance is Melinda’s greatest passion, and you have given her an amazing gift that she will forever treasure.” - Lee, mother of Melinda Nipomo, California The Goldberg family who you have so generously helped the last few years, would not have been able to do some of the camps without the generous support of the cancer recovery foundation. Many of my families struggle financially due to the hospital bills combine with the loss of income. We are so grateful we came upon your organization. Best, Sharon Garner, MSW 8 | 2011-2012 ANNUAL REPORT INTERNATIONAL AID “Are We Our Brothers’ (and Sisters’) Keepers?” The Bible’s story of Cain and Abel drives an important part of the mission of Children’s Cancer Recovery Foundation. After Cain had murdered his brother Abel, God asked him where his brother was. Cain answered, “I know not; am I my brother’s keeper?” Cain’s words have come to symbolize people’s unwillingness to accept responsibility for the welfare of their fellows — their “brothers” in the extended sense of the term. The Judeo-Christian tradition is that people do have this responsibility. Children’s Cancer Recovery Foundation operates an extensive international aid program which provides treatment medications and medical supplies to clinics and doctors treating cancer patients in developing and impoverished countries. We also provide medicine and supplies to aid medical professionals in the treatment and prevention of the side effects of cancer including lymphedema and treatment-related infections. Children’s Cancer Recovery Foundation has partnered with mission hospitals, medical clinics and healthcare providers in Ghana, Guatemala, Honduras, Kenya, the Philippines and Viet Nam. Without this important program, literally thousands of cancer patients would simply not be able to receive the medical attention that is required for survival. Indeed, we are proud to do our part in being our brothers’—and sisters’—keeper. HOW YOUR GIFTS HELP! “Thank you for your donation of cancer medicines and medical supplies. We are in such desperate need for these donations. Guatemala’s economy is getting worse with no end in sight and because of this half the population is under poverty line and/or extreme poverty. That’s why your donation is a God send for all of us.” -Roberto A. Gramajo R. Severeign Order of Malta “Thanks to you, Children’s Cancer Recovery Foundation, for your generous donation of the Gardasil Vaccine. Rural Women’s Initiative for Development and Empowerment (RUWIDE), working with the Ministry of Health in Ghana, will be using the Gardasil vaccine to protect 32,000 young girls between 9 years old and 13 years old from HPV which can also cause cervical cancer and breast cancer, among other cancers.” - Maria H.
