FROM THE EDITOR
Starting something new is exciting! Whether
it’s attending a new school, moving to a new
town, starting a new job or even just changing
your hair to a new colour – it is accompanied
with the thrill of the unknown as well as with
endless possibility. That’s what the coming
of a new year is to me… And particularly the
start of 2015.
After the challenging year of losing our
Founder and Editor mid last year, HORSE
TRADING has proven that, much like the
magnificent animal that adorns our cover every
month, it is resilient above all. Fast forward
to the present and just look at the progress.
We are fostering powerful partnerships with
many of the most prominent advertisers
in the industry and we are continuously
learning about what types of articles our loyal
readers want to see more of (heck, we’re even
incorporating the opinions and knowledge
of relevant industry experts, like our Equine
Dental Technician – Steve Clark).
But more than this, one does not have to look
much further than the hive of activity that is
our Facebook page to see that we are reuniting
the South African equestrian community as
we strive to create a platform for likeminded
horsey-folk.
That’s not all… The team at HORSE TRADING
have a couple of exhilarating developments
and offerings in store for 2015. You can
expect that we’ll deliver more value in ways
that are bigger and better, and have been
specifically developed with your preferences
in mind.
We are excited to take it up a notch and are
thrilled that you are joining us for the ride as
we take 2015 by the reins.

TO SUPPLEMENT OR NOT?
“Large amounts of supplements may not improve an animal’s performance,
but less than optimal amounts will certainly limit their performance, at
best”
You most certainly do not need to be a novice, to be
confused on the subject of Animal nutrition. There are
no longer discussions about whether supplementation is
needed for animals, but rather, in what amounts they are
needed.
All animals have some level of supplementation needs,
much the same as humans do, and it is the exact amount
that remains a mystery. Much research has been done in
ascertaining the minimum amounts required to prevent
deficiencies, whilst very little research on what maximum
amounts are required. The ranges for optimum health
and performance are luckily large enough to allow for
substantial supplementation.
We also then are well aware that due to all the chemicals
used to kill the bad bacteria on crops and in water, also
kills any good bacteria , hence our beneficial gut bacteria
is minimal at best.
Feeding a formulated pet food, does unfortunately
not guarantee your animal is receiving all the required
nutrition in the ‘fully allowed’ amounts, as firstly; feed
manufactures are regulated by the department of
agriculture, to contain only the minimum amounts of only
some vitamins and minerals. Secondly; common sense
tells us that if all that is required, is present in maximum
levels, our pet food would cost 10 times what we are
currently paying. Thirdly; we are all well aware that due
to soil deteriation whatever is grown in it or grazes from
it, will be lacking.
The above information is extracts taken from papers
presented and accepted by the Council of Nutrient
Requirements of animals – Washington, USA.
8
To ensure your pets optimum health and vitality
supplementation becomes fundamental.
Fortunately most vitamins & minerals etc. have very high
toxicity thresholds, so balanced supplementation is a
relatively safe practice, without ill effects.

animal’s performance, but less than optimal amounts will
certainly limit their performance, at best”

Jenny’s Jabber
In loving memory of our founder, without whom the African
equestrian industry would be so much poorer, we have
introduced this section to the magazine. Here you can expect
to find a bunch of useful hints, the occasional joke, book and
blog reviews and much more.
According to Chinese wisdom, the end of the glorious Year of
the Horse is upon us. Ranging from 31 January 2014 until 18
February 2015, the Year of the Horse occurs once every twelve
years in the Chinese Zodiac.
To the Chinese, the spirit of the horse is said to symbolise
an ethos of consistent improvement. Horses are also seen as
energetic and warm-hearted, they are said to learn easily and
are thought of as particularly able creatures. So much so that
the Chinese have an ancient idiom, describing someone who
is particularly adept as a “Qianli Ma”, which translates into
someone being akin to ‘a horse that travels 5000 metre a day
with ease’.
Similarly to the Western notion of astrology or “star signs”
where people born during a certain one month period is
believed to possess specific personality traits, the Chinese
Zodiac’s proponents hold that all individuals born within a
specific year have distinguishable qualities from those born
in other years.
It is said that individuals born during the Year of the Horse are
extremely active and energetic folk. Like horses, the Chinese
believe that people born in this period love being in a crowd
and are often seen comfortably basking in the lime light
during performances (such as theatre performances) or even
during meetings at work. So much so that people born in this
year are seen as making excellent sales representatives, actors
and performers as well as tour operators (where they are able
to tell small groups of people animated fables while being the
centre of attention).
www.horsetrading.co.za
This is not to say that those born in this period are
vain or self-centred… On the contrary, the Chinese
believe that such individuals are simply driven and,
paired with their energetic and optimistic nature,
they generally unwittingly attract attention.
Whether or not you subscribe to the belief that
people born over a certain period can exhibit
similar personality traits and so forth, ancient
beliefs and wisdoms are nonetheless fascinating –
offering a glimpse into the days of years gone by...

fter saving the details of this Young Equestrian Star for more than two months, we are delighted to start 2015
off by setting the bar high – which is exactly what Caedyn Pereira does! Aged 10, Caedyn has been riding his
pony, Boogy, for just over two years during which they have developed a fabulously fun friendship.
This adorable picture of Caedyn dressed as the Disney movie Frozen’s lovable snowman character, Olaf,
was taken during Chartwell Children’s Riding School’s Winter Wonderland fancy dress show last year.
So impressed with his original outfit, the judges honoured Caedyn by awarding him second place…
Here at HORSE TRADING, we particularly adore this section of the magazine. Our spectacular group of parents who

A word on Equine Dental Care, by Steve Clark
HORSE TRADING runs a bi-monthly equine dental care feature with the insights of equine dental health expert, Steve Clark.
As a Qualified Equine Dental Technician, Steve has not only gained extensive experience in equine dental care
internationally, but he was even the apprentice of the world renowned International Association of Equine Dentistry
examiner, Fernando Martinez. In his feature, Steve covers interesting topics on equine dental care, including case
studies, teaching you some of the best equine dental health promotion practices and more.
WHY DO OUR HORSES NEED DENTISTRY AFTER ALL?
ST EVE C LARK - EqDT I AED/C A
Equine dentistry is now a recognised profession around
the world. It has been around for thousands of years,
but it wasn’t until the 20th century that knowledge and
advanced studies have been explored in depth and with
greater results. Every new year brings with it advances in
technology and new discoveries which are enabling us to
study further and learn more about equine dentistry and
the effects it has on the equine.
Since many horses are unable to achieve their full
potential, due to incorrect or non-existent dentistry
treatment, it’s vital to create awareness regarding
the vast benefits of regular dental care. Once owners
understand these benefits, equine dentistry will be
properly incorporated as an integral part of equine health
care, working alongside vets, farriers, physiotherapists
and chiropractors.
The necessity of sufficient dental care becomes more
apparent when taking into account the fact that our
domesticated horses are unable to wear their teeth
naturally. This is as a result of the way in which we keep
them (soft pasture grasses, stable restrictions, hays and
concentrated feeds). By contrast, in the wild, horses
would generally dig for roots in much harder soils and
eat a courser type of grass with less sugars. Due to the
hypsodont nature (or continual erruption) of equine
teeth, horses in captivity do not wear down their incisors
at the same rate as the molars. This leaves the molars
gapped and unable to chew food efficiently as the years
go on. Rasping only the molars, and not adjusting the
incisors accordingly will accelerate this process.
Chewing pressure should be distributed evenly over
three points, namely the TMJ (Temporal Mandibular Joint),
Cheek teeth (molars) and the incisors. Research shows
this improves the horse’s balance in general with regards
to issues such as: stumbling or tripping, shortening of
the stride and problems with lateral movement. Some
back stiffness and muscle problems are related to the
TMJ as well. In studies published in the New York Dental
Journal, experimental malocclusion (abnormal contact of
opposing upper and lower teeth) was reported to have
significant changes on spinal posture and general muscle
strength. It has also been noted that spinal posture
abnormalities have been known to cause malocclusions
by causing imbalances in the muscles of mastication.
A-P (Anterior- Posterior) movement of the
mandible:
This is vital to the horse’s movement, head carriage and
body positioning as well as the ability to incise grass
correctly. Any imbalance in the mouth e.g.: ramps, ETR
(excessive transverse ridges), steps or waves affect
the horse in its ability to masticate and perform. When
stopping or collecting, the lower jaw moves backwards
and forwards ever so slightly in different head positions
and if this is restricted or locked, the horse either starts
head shaking or compensates using other parts of its body
to achieve the desired task. You may get incorrect muscle
development, incorrect neck and head positioning and
eventually muscle and skeletal problems.
Although it is widely known that rasping sharp points
increases the comfort for the horse when chewing
and being ridden, there is actually a lot more involved
in increasing the proficiency of mastication and the
performance of the horse. The three main objectives
when looking at and assessing a horse, is to see whether
three point balance is attainable, A-P (Anterior Posterior)
movement is correct and the correct bit seats are installed.
Three Point Balance:
Three point balance is the meeting of the mandibular
(lower) cheek teeth and incisors with the maxillary
(upper) teeth and incisors, when the jaw is closed and
centred.
16
This photo shows a hook on the upper pre-molar with a wolf tooth above.
This would cause the mouth to “lock up” and considerable discomfort
from any bit pressure.
www.horsetrading.co.za
F E AT U R E
Bit seats:
Once the mouth is functioning correctly, the aim is to ensure that a correct bit seat (rounding and shaping of the front
portion of the first pre molars), has been installed. Different types of bit seats are installed in horses performing
different tasks. Even brood mares are given a slight bit seat to aid in the axial flow of long stemmed grass through the
mouth. Bit seating is vital for lower bar relief, tongue relief, cheek comfort, palate comfort and improved performance.
Common symptoms to look out for in a horse without any bit seats include:
∙
∙
∙
∙
∙
∙
Irritability
Head shaking or tilting,
Rearing or flipping over Running off and running backwards,
Leaning on the bit
General bit resistance.
BEFORE
AFTER
An over-long protuberant tooth before and after reduction with bit seat
One of the most neglected parts and almost certainly one of the most important is the incisors. They depict how the
molars wear, so any malocclusions present are going to affect molar wear and the TMJ joint. One of the most common
problems with incisors is that they become over long, which in turn reduces the occlusal grinding surface of the
molars (this may lead to weight loss, stumbling and tripping). When reducing maleruptions in the molars the incisors
will need to be addressed and adjusted accordingly. That said, incisors may only need a reduction every 1-4 years
depending on factors such as age and living conditions. This is necessary to keep the desired occlusion and three
point balance.
Slanted and smiled incisors are also quite common and need to be addressed in the same way as over long incisors.
They need alignment and reduction to obtain optimum efficiency of the mouth.
Slanted incisors
Balanced, level incisors
When one understands the significance of regular dental care to a horse’s overall wellness and performance, it is clear
why dental experts recommend that dental maintenance work be done once every six months for horses under the
age of ten and once a year for horses over the age of ten.

Getting to know our neighbours
With almost 40 popular equestrian breeds in Southern Africa, the team at HORSE TRADING is delving into the differences
between them. Every month we shall feature a different breed, exploring its history and tracing its temperament.
That way, you will get a refresher course on the difference between an Ass and an Arabian…
PAINT HORSE
History
During the invasion of the Roman Empire, around 500
A.D., many barbaric tribes brought their spotted
Oriental horses with them as they travelled from
Eurasia to Spain. These spotted horses were quickly
interbred with the Spanish native horse stock and
the Paint Horse breed emerged.
Paint Horses accompanied the Spanish Conquistadors
during their odyssey to America.
Physical Attributes
The modern Paint Horse shares a common
ancestry with the American Quarter Horse
as well as the Thoroughbred. Like the two
aforementioned breeds, the Paint Horse
boasts powerful hindquarters that can
enable its rapid acceleration and swift
sprinting. Moreover, the Paint Horse
features a muscular body that is
not exceptionally tall. In fact, the
average Paint stands between
14.2 and 16 hands tall.
While Paint Horses can be found in
many different colours, including
bay, chestnut, palomino, grey and
blue roan, it is their unique white
markings which truly distinguish
them. It almost looks like someone
splashed white paint on them…
Each Paint’s white markings differ. That said, Paint Horses’ have two predominant white marking coat patterns, namely an
overo pattern and a tobiano pattern. An overo pattern is seen on a Paint Horse that displays ‘white-over-dark’ coat markings. A
tobiano, by contrast, commonly produces white hair on pink skin markings over a dark base coat.
Temperament & Uses
Paint Horses have a reputation for being one of the hardest working horses found in America – which is why they were so popular
in the days of the old west. Paints were popular choices for those who had to travel long distances from one area to another and
quickly became a favorite among old west farmers and Native Americans alike.
Their amiable, good-natured temperaments coupled with their innate intelligence makes Paint Horses a pleasure to train for
dressage, jumping and even horse racing.
