of an apartment complex that could impact The
Lakes with potential changes to traffic, schools,
and our property values.
I received the following letter from Shauna
Warner with the city of Tempe Neighborhood
Services with regard to the upcoming meeting:
Over the last several years, there has been
a significant amount of discussion and interest
from area residents regarding the vision for
the Lake Country Village site, located on the
northwest corner of Lakeshore and Baseline,
1030 E. Baseline. Lake Country Village was
previously a retail shopping center dating back
to the mid-1970’s. The redevelopment portion
of the parcel represents 18 acres of the 25 acre
site and is zoned for commercial with a use
permit to allow multi-family development as a
component.
Area residents are invited to join city staff
to learn about the current and past plans for
redevelopment of the site and to share ideas
and input into Lake Country Village as well
as note any issues and concerns regarding
redevelopment of the parcel. This is your
opportunity to get and provide information
on potential opportunities for additional
commercial, retail and dining in this
commercial area.
It is important to recognize that the city
is neither the owner nor the developer of this
property. To whatever extent possible, any
future redevelopment initiated by private
development that takes place should be
designed to add to and serve as an amenity for
the surrounding area.
The Mayor and City Council have been
invited to attend and it is possible that a
quorum of the City Council may be present;
however, no city business will be conducted
and no action will be taken. This is an event
only and not a meeting of the City Council. Due
to pending litigation, elected officials will not
participate.
I encourage all Lakes residents to attend this
meeting and share your input and, as always,
if you have any questions or concerns, please
contact me at 480-838-1023.

Lakes board candidates share their views, vision
On January 14, a Meet Your Candidates
meeting was held and chaired by Mike
Pameditis. Biographies of the candidates may
be found in this issue of the Lakes Log or in
your ballot.
After Mr. Pameditis explained the procedure
of the meeting to the candidates, the candidates
then gave a brief resume of why they are
running for the Board. At the end, questions
from the audience were entertained.
Some concerns centered on the candidates
knowledge of the CC&Rs and By-Laws, and
being liaisons to the various committees. Maintaining the Lakes buildings and property
and the integrity of the lake was also of concern. Another issue was how to prevent crime in
our area. Getting to know one’s neighbor and
participating in Block Watch events seem to
resonate with the three candidates.
Ballots have been mailed out and if they are
to be returned by mail, they must be mailed by
February 6. Ballots may also be hand carried to
the Feb. 10 Homeowners Meeting, but must be
delivered by 8pm in order to be counted. Please mark your calendar for this important
event and plan to attend. — Submitted by Gloria Hollingsworth

Participants travel by either

For those of you who wish to

RICK ANDREWS
I moved to the Lakes in 1998 thinking it would
be a great place to build a family. We started off
with a dog, and when that went well we added our
two wonderful boys now ages 11 and 13. We were
drawn to the Lakes for its central location, mature
landscaping and because it is an oasis in our desert
community. You can usually find me training for a
10k around the neighborhood, having fun with my
boys at one of the parks, or playing pool and pingpong with them at the clubhouse.
I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Finance from
the University of Arizona and have worked as a
mortgage underwriter for 23 years in Arizona,
Hawaii and California. This gives me a good
understanding of what supports real estate values
in a neighborhood such as The Lakes. I have
augmented my experience by serving on the LCA
Architectural and Landscaping committee in 2007,
LCA Board 2008-2011 with one year as treasurer
and then the Budget and Finance Committee from
2011 to present.
As a Board Member my strong listening skills
will ensure a balanced view on issues before making
decisions. My accounting experience and deductive
reasoning have also prepared me well for the
position. I plan to make the best choices possible to
keep the community a great place to live, now and in
the future.
MEET YOUR CANDIDATES
FOR THE LCA BOARD
OF DIRECTORS
CHARLIE LIKO
I can remember distinctly the first time my wife
and I drove into the lakes, we both knew this was
the community we had to live in!
The lake made it feel as though we had found
an oasis in the desert, lush grass and mature trees
lining the streets and people walking with their pets,
It’s unique, it’s wonderful, it’s home.
My wife and I being from the Midwest found
many neighborhoods to be beautiful, but none that
touched us deep down in our roots like the lakes.
We found a rental right away, moved in and
immediately began plugging in and enjoying the
community, and getting to know our neighbors.
There is a special kinship I feel among the residents
here, a deep sense of pride and ownership of our
unique community. That was in 2009, and in 2011
we purchased a home on Spinnaker which is where
we reside today.
We have three children here, my oldest son Cole
is a sophomore at Marcos De Niza, my daughter
Carlie is an 8th grader at Fee’s and my son Caleb is in
the 5th grade at Rover.
We are completely vested here and feel it
incumbent upon us to do all that we can to assure
that it continues to be the great community it is
today and even better in the future!
I am an entrepreneur that is passionate about
taking something from an idea to fruition. I have
always felt the bigger the challenge, the greater
the excitement in succeeding. I currently am half
owner of a rapidly expanding eco friendly pest
control company, in which I handle business
development, marketing, book keeping and systems
implementation , and am the principle partner of an
insurance brokerage company.
I served as Vice President of the board of
overseers for the Wonderful Mercy Church in
Gilbert, am currently Vice President of the Gilbert
Historical leads group, and serve on the membership
committee of a Business Networking International
group that meets in Chandler.
It would be a privilege for me to bring my
experiences in business to my own community. It
is a core value of mine that my children grow up
seeing their parents give themselves to things that
have great value to them and this would definitely fit
that definition for me.
TONY RAO
My wife, Kim, and I moved to the Lakes in
August 2006. We first lived in a condo at Sandcastle
and then bought our first home on Steamboat Bend
6 years ago where we currently reside. Since then,
we have had 2 children, Lina (5) and Lucas (2).
The Lakes has been a wonderful community for
my family. My brother and his family live 7 houses
down from us and my parents live 2 blocks away. As
a closely knit family, my wife and I easily foresee us
staying in the community at least until our children
graduate high school and probably beyond.
We take great pride in the appearance of our
home and yard and are always striving to improve
it. We also believe in the beauty of The Lakes. Our
long term commitment to this community is the
main reason why I am running for the Lakes Board.
I was born in Canada but moved to Tempe when
I was 14. I went to high school at Corona del Sol,
and then received dual B.S. degrees in chemistry
and biochemistry at the University of Arizona.
Following this, I attended Temple University School
of Dentistry in Philadelphia PA and graduated in
2004. I purchased my dental practice in Phoenix at
the beginning of the great recession.
I am very proud to say that it has had steady
growth throughout this time. This happened because
of hard work but also proper financial budgeting,
cost analysis, and fiscal planning--all traits I plan on
bringing to the HOA as a board member.
My main objectives are improving current
infrastructure as well as tackling issues with crime
and safety.
These issues are vital for the livelihood of
the present community, as well as for future
generations. If elected, I would always be willing
to listen to the comments, recommendations and
concerns of my neighbors and I know that together,
we can ensure that The Lakes community continues
to shine.

Snow Frolic enchants kids, adults FIRST FRIDAY
The fifth annual Snow Frolic took place
on Saturday, January 3rd, 2015. Due to
questionable weather on January 1st, the event
was changed to January 3rd. 75 children enjoyed playing in the five tons
of snow located in the parking lot of The Lakes
Clubhouse from 12pm-2pm. Refreshments were provided by Lakes
Women’s Club members and frolic participants
and 6 gallons of hot chocolate were consumed
by the attendees. The Lakes Women’s Club also provided 30
pairs of children’s gloves for those bare hands.
A special appearance from ‘Olaf’ helped to
ensure the festivities were fun for all. ‘Olaf’
posed for many pictures with attendees as
music from the movie Frozen played in the
background. A Huge thank you to the Clubhouse staff for
all of their assistance in the set up and strike of
this event! Plans for the 2016 snow frolic are being
secured for Saturday, January 2nd with a 10am start.

Book Club: Mysteries and Histories
A new Book Club is having its first meeting at
the Lakes clubhouse on February 19th at 7:15.
The first book is Ordinary Grace by William
Kent Krueger, a novel/mystery about a small
town in the Midwest.
Discussion will be open to any topic in the
book. We are hoping that the genre ongoing
will be a choice of the group members.
This book has been successful in other book
clubs and has been chosen as the starting work
due to the high quality of character development
and plot.
Michael Fritz and Clark Fisher have set this
club up as an official Lakes activity.
Richard Schooler will advise.
Step 1. Pick up the book on line, Amazon or
at the book store
Step 2. Read the book
Step 3. Come to the club for a lively
discussion on the book
Step 4. Discuss the form of the group going
