ADULT CHALLENGE PALM SUNDAY Unit 7, Lesson 2 Objective Aim: Subjective Aim: Scripture: Memory Verse: The people praised Jesus when He rode into Jerusalem on a colt. Jesus, please give me the desire to praise You. Matthew 21:1-11; Luke 19:28-40; Mark 11: 1-10; Zechariah 9:9 “Yet to his son I will give one tribe, that David my servant may always have a lamp before me in Jerusalem, the city where I have chosen to put my name.” (1 Kings 11:36 ESV) Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. (Zechariah 9:9 ESV) Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a colt to the shouts of “Hosanna, Hosanna.” Hosanna comes from a Hebrew word and literally means, “Save us, we pray.” It is taken from Psalm 118:25. Both the words and the actions of the people honor the One coming into the city. It is quite probable that many of the people were not aware of the significance of this day; they were merely caught up in the excitement and celebration of the event. At the annual Passover celebration, the people chanted Psalm 118: 25-26. Thus as Jesus entered the city some ran ahead of Him and some behind Him, chanting: Save us, we pray, O LORD! O LORD, we pray, give us success! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the LORD! We bless you from the house of the LORD. (Psalm 118:25-26 ESV) Jesus. . fill Your Servant’s heart full to overflowing in praise of You. May this be a time of remembrance of all You have done in his/her life. In Jesus name, Amen. KidTrek © Palm Sunday 36 Sunday Plus Holiday Unit 7, Lesson 2 Kids’ Bible Focus NOOK (Begin as soon as first kid enters, 15 MT) GATHERING As the kids enter have them sit with you on the floor in a circle. Opening questions: o Do you like when someone tells you something they like about you? How does it make you feel? o How does it feel when someone says something bad about you? o What do you like to do when you have time off from school? Musical Spoons MATERIALS : plastic spoons Kids sit in a circle. Using a permanent marker place a spot on one of the spoons where it is not readily noticeable. One less spoon than players are placed in the center of the circle. o Make sure the spoon with the dot is in the pile from the first round. All players are given 3 Bucks. Music is played or leader claps. When the sound stops everyone tries to get a spoon. The player to not get a spoon must give the leader a Buck. Every fifth round the person who gets the spoon with the black dot gets all the Bucks the leader is holding. KidTrek © Palm Sunday 37 Sunday Plus Holiday Unit 7, Lesson 2 Kids’ Bible Focus The Story Specialist will lead this Reality Check/Hearing the Word Time. REALITY CHECK and HEARING THE WORD (30 MT, all Trek Teams together, led by Story Specialist.) MATERIALS : donkey/colt, palm fronds/branches, Clothes to lay out in front of “Jesus,” diagram of the “Passover Door” The children will make a Cross out of their Palm Frond for craft. They can do this in their Trek Teams on the floor. A Craft Specialist leads them through the creation steps. PREP Rent a donkey/colt – they usually aren’t difficult to find. o Know size of man the animal can hold Recruit a “Jesus.” Order palm frond/branches (see links for ordering on page 36) Gather clothes that the kids can lay out in front of where “Jesus” will go. DISCUSSION Explain to the kids that today is a day of celebration. o You will take them through some questions referring back to the lesson “Pharaoh’s Purpose – To Show God’s Power,” Unit 4. Lesson 3 o This is to assist them in connecting The Passover to Palm Sunday and then Easter. Today is the day that we remember when Jesus rode a donkey into Jerusalem. o For the people who lived in Jesus’ day it was the celebration of Passover. o Remember the story of God using Moses to free the Israelites from being slaves in Egypt? This is what led to the first Passover, help me remember what happened. o Can you remember what God did to convince Pharaoh to let the Israelites go? He sent plagues to show Pharaoh that He, God, was all powerful. In other words Pharaoh could not keep the Israelites in Egypt. o What were the Plagues? If possible find visuals of the plagues that you could put on PowerPoint or just have pictures to show the kids. Nile River into blood. Frogs everywhere Dust of earth became gnats Swarms of flies Horses, donkeys, camels, sheep all that belonged to Egypt died Boils broke out on all Egyptians Heavy hail fell. Locusts covered the land Egypt was covered in darkness – they couldn’t see anything for three days An angel of death was sent to kill the firstborn child of each Egyptian family o What did God do to Pharaoh’s heart after each of the first nine plagues? God hardened Pharaoh’s heart so he would say “no” to the Israelites leaving. This KidTrek © Palm Sunday 38 Sunday Plus Holiday Unit 7, Lesson 2 Kids’ Bible Focus gave God the opportunity to once again show all the world that He is powerful. (Exodus 9: 15-17) o What did the Israelites have to do for the 10 th plague so that their oldest child would not be killed? (Have the door diagram where all the kids can see it) They had to put blood on the door post. The angel of death passed over every home that had blood on the door post. o Anyone remember why this is important and how it connects to Jesus? The way the blood was placed on the door it represented a cross. The Friday after this Sunday (Palm Sunday), Jesus would die on the cross. o Why did Jesus die on the cross? Because we are sinners, we break God’s laws. God is holy He cannot interact with those who break His laws. God is just – punishment had to be paid for our sin. Jesus took our punishment. Jesus died on the cross and experienced total separation from God so we wouldn’t have to. God is separated from every human – except those who are a member of His family. o How do we become a member of God’s family? See if the kids can answer this. You fill in or correct. If needed, reference Romans 10:9-10. We begin with knowing that Jesus is God. We know that He took the punishment for our sins by dying on the cross. We admit we are sinners. We repent of our sin (feel so bad for hurting Jesus with our sin we never want to do it again). We tell Jesus we want to surrender to Him, we want to be owned by Him, we want to obey Him. o So now imagine that you are an Israelite living when Jesus lived. You have grown up being told over and over that the Messiah is going to come to save all the Israelites. Think of everything you’ve learned this year about the Israelites. Anyone want to share anything? (Begin now to get the kids excited) Give them the opportunity to share but don’t press them. If they don’t remember anything then you share a couple – e.g.God called Abraham to leave everything he knew and go to a new land; Gideon hid in the wine press because he was so fearful of the Israelites’ enemies; Joseph sold into slavery by his brothers but was then able to save them during a famine. o Every year the Israelites celebrated Passover – when the angel of death passed over the homes of their ancestors in Egypt. They celebrated and thanked God for saving the Israelite children. Every year they prayed for the Messiah to come. They thought the Messiah would come and make them great – they thought He would take away the suffering they were going through. They thought he would be a king KidTrek © Palm Sunday 39 Sunday Plus Holiday Unit 7, Lesson 2 Kids’ Bible Focus who would rule everyone. Each year when they celebrated Passover they did so with great expectation. Read Mark 11: 1-10 o Come, let’s go experience Jesus’ arrival in Jerusalem. Have disciplers prepared to lead the kids in what they are to do. Hand out Palm fronds. THE ACTIVITY (Story Specialist leads, all Trek Teams together) Hand out Palm Fronds to all of the kids. Get them excited about Jesus’ coming. o In an excited tone paint a picture of the people and their excitement in the day they celebrated Jesus’ entering Jerusalem. o Be very animated so as the kids go outside they are excited and have anticipation also. Give them some instruction of what you want them to do. o Shout Halleluiah and Hosanna. o Throw clothes down in front of Jesus on the donkey. Or you may just have a few adults do that. After they are finished they return for Chat n’ Chew. If you participate in our discussion then your gum will go on this chart (at the end). When the chart is full the group will get to choose any dessert they wish. Teacher, Encourager, Counselor Our only HOPE Eternal 1. What do you think that would have felt like if you lived 2,000 years ago and experienced that for real? No right or wrong – this is to help them calm down from the excitement and to get their brains at a place to concentrate. 2. Let’s look at Zechariah 9:9 Read it with the kids. This was written hundreds of years before Jesus was even born. Remind them of the prophecies they learned of at Christmas. This is one of those prophecies. 3. If you heard that a king was going to come what would you think that meant? The Israelites thought it meant that He would take over and rule. It would mean they would no longer be under the terrible, painful rule of others. 4. Palm Sunday is a time of celebration, a time to do as the Israelites did and praise Jesus. We know who Jesus really is – He is God. What are some other things we know about Jesus? You can share something in a sentence or just a word. KidTrek © Palm Sunday Have the kids thank the Lord – thanksgiving is when we are grateful for something He has done for us. Praise the Lord – praise is when we acknowledge the greatness of who God is and what His attributes (qualities) are. Help the kids to get into the wonder of who Jesus is. To understand that He didn’t have to die on the cross, He could have left us to take our own punishment. However He loved us so much that He died for us – He took our punishment. He provided us a way to be united with God. Have a NOOK type game ready for just your Trek Team if you have time left. 41 Sunday Plus Holiday Unit 7, Lesson 2 Kids’ Bible Focus CRAFTS (Led by Craft Specialist – 15MT) Crosses from Palm Fronds MATERIALS: a blade from a palm frond per kid, CRAFTS PREP Practice this several times so you know how you will walk the kids through step by step. Jacob Johnson(10) and Olivia Johnson(7) are brother and sister. They live in a middle class family; their parents are Christians and provide a solid home. Mr. Johnson owns his own car repair shop and Mrs. Johnson is a teacher’s aide at the school. Grace Lim (7) is a friend of Olivia’s. She lives with her mother, Miriam Lim, brother Daniel (8), and sister Luann (11). Grace’s dad was killed in an automobile accident a year ago. The Johnsons and Lims attend the same church. Pablo Garcia (10) is a friend of Jacob’s. His family is immigrants. His parents allow him to attend activities at church with Jacob because they appreciate the family values of the Johnsons; Mr. Garcia is a computer programmer; Mrs. Garcia is a stay at home mom and speaks very little English. Pablo has two sisters who are in their twenties, Alicia and Rose. Most skits will only have the four bolded characters. However, occasionally the skit will call for added characters. This will be a somber evening as you experience the washing of feet and communion. KidTrek© Palm Sunday Everything will be done in family groupings. Have options for single parents to choose from. o Two families of single parents can be in one grouping. o A single mom may want to be part of a family headed by a dad. o Elders may head up a group of two or three families of singles. o Single family may want to be its own group. o If there is a single parent you know has a decent relationship with his/her spouse and that individual is a believer suggest that the spouse be invited to join the family for this evening. o This would be a great time to invite Senior Citizens whose children and grandchildren don’t attend your church to come and head up a family grouping. Plan for non-church kids to sit with their discipler’s family. Plan to have childcare for children birth through 3. Make the evening fit your church’s teaching, theology. 54 Sunday Plus Unit 7, Lesson 2 Kids’ Weekday Celebration Prep MATERIALS: instructions for head of family, a couple of towels per family, bowl with water per family, plate with matzo crackers, small cups, small bottles with juice per family, Bibles, red yarn Place chairs in small circles. o You have a fairly good idea of the number of individuals in a family in your church – arrange the chairs to match the families of your church. It will be impossible to get it exactly correct so have extra chairs leaning against a wall. Plan to have someone at the door to explain to the Head of Family what he/she is to do. o If your church does not believe a woman should give communion then you will need to make sure there is a comfortable way for single moms to have a man in her family group. This could be done by having senior citizens without immediate family in the church join with a single mom and her family. Be creative then in having the mom bless each of her children. Lay instructions on a chair, for the Head of Family, in each circle. Place towels, bowl of water, matzo crackers, small cups and small bottles of grape juice, and pieces of red yarn in the center of each circle of chairs. o If you need to purchase bottles for the grape juice this is a link to inexpensive bottles/jars http://www.containerandpackaging.com/subtype.asp?itemtype=Glass_Containers Be sure disciplers are expecting kids without family present to be a part of their family for this evening. If someone enters without a Bible give them a Bible. The Order of Worship Sheet on p. 58 has lines on which you write the names of those participating. IDEAL: People register for the evening so you can email Head of Family the instructions ahead of time. GATHERING As families enter tell the Head of Family that there is a sheet of instructions on a chair in their circle. Head of Family may be a father, grandfather or single-mom. Tell them to sit in a circle of chairs that has the closest number of chairs to their family members. KidTrek© Palm Sunday 55 Sunday Plus Unit 7, Lesson 2 Kids’ Weekday Celebration HEAD OF FAMILY INSTRUCTIONS MATERIALS: Bible for each kid, Beginning Discussion Engage your family in the following discussion. 1. What is your very first memory? There is no right or wrong answer here. If you have never shared this with your kids they will enjoy hearing yours. This is just a fun question. 2. What is the first toy you remember having? What did you like about this toy? 3. Invite the kids to ask Mom and Dad about a childhood memory they have. Let each kid have the opportunity to ask a question. 4. What is your first memory of knowing about God? 5. If you are a member of God’s family when do you remember that happening? Explanation of Communion (Explain communion to your children if this is their first introduction to it) Tonight we are going to remember that Jesus died on the cross so that we can be with God forever. Everyone who is a member of God’s family will be invited to eat a cracker as a remembrance of Jesus’ body; then we will drink some grape juice to remember that Jesus bled as he died on the cross. If you are not a member of God’s family then you will listen but you won’t take the cracker and juice. The Bible tells us that only God’s family should take communion. A Game (I Spy) If you finish the discussion and the explanation of communion before others do, here is a simple game to play. Have a child look around the room and choose something, she doesn’t tell anyone what it is. She says, “I Spy something ‘red’ In this room.” The family then tries to guess what the “red” object in the room is she has “spied” by asking yes and no questions. Whoever guesses correctly is the new “spy,” who will find something else for the group to guess; the clue is always what color the object is. KidTrek© Palm Sunday 56 Sunday Plus Unit 7, Lesson 2 Kids’ Weekday Celebration Foot Washing You will wash the feet of your family members. Gently rub the foot in the water and as you do so give the individual a blessing. o E.g. I bless you name of child . I bless you in the name of Jesus, proclaiming the blessings of God, my Redeemer, upon you. May He give you wisdom, a reverential fear of God, and a heart of love.I pray that you will grow up to be a man of God. You are a gift from God to our family. Put the above into your own words, fitting it according to the specific child you are praying for. o If you are able to do so make it slightly unique for each child. Dry the foot and move to the next one. Have a special word for the adults too. Communion You will pass out the bread and pour the grape juice into the cups. Explain to your children that the bread and grape juice are reminders of what Jesus did for us. o The bread and juice are not really Jesus’ body and blood. FOOT WASHING John 13: 1-20: Someone reads the scripture dramatically so you keep the attention of the kids. o Direct everyone to take off one shoe and sock. o Head of Family will wash the feet of the other members of the family. o Tell Head of Family to read instructions and proceed. KidTrek© Palm Sunday 58 Sunday Plus Unit 7, Lesson 2 Kids’ Weekday Celebration DO THIS IN REMEMBRANCE OF ME o Have everyone open their Bibles to Luke 22:19-20 o Read passage. o Remembering special times in our lives helps us as we continue to grow in our walk with Jesus. Just as you had a time of remembering in your families at the beginning of the service. Some memories are happy and we get excited, other memories are sad and difficult to remember – but they are still important. o Some people will tie a string around their fingers to remember something important. Tonight we are going to tie a red piece of yarn around our fingers as a reminder that Jesus shed His blood because He loves us so much. The yarn is in the center of your family circles. (As they are putting on their strings) Jesus loves us so much that He wants us to be with Him forever. The problem is that because we sin, we break God’s laws, we are separated from Him. THAT is why Jesus came to earth. God is Holy, He cannot be in the presence of sin. For us to be united with God someone had to take the punishment for the sin. BUT who could do that? (Be prepared for kids to yell out Jesus) It had to be someone who had never sinned Himself. Jesus had never sinned so He came to take the punishment for our sins. When we have a great regret for our sins and we don’t want to sin anymore, we tell this to Jesus. We tell Him that we want to do what He wants us to do. We tell Him we want to follow Him forever. When we have done those things we become a member of God’s family. o Let’s open our Bibles to 1 Corinthians 11: 27-29. (Read it) o If you are not a member of God’s family you shouldn’t take communion KidTrek© Palm Sunday 59 Sunday Plus Unit 7, Lesson 2 Kids’ Weekday Celebration COMMUNION Bread o Explain to Head of Families to take the plate of Matzo crackers and give a piece to each member of the family. Then wait. o The crackers(matzo), are unleavened. This means it has no yeast in it. This represents that Jesus was without sin. Hebrews 4:15 o Stripes = Isaiah 53 – “By His stripes we were healed.” o Holes = Zechariah 12 – “They shall look upon Him whom they have pierced.” o Invite the people to partake of the bread while saying, “ Do This In Remembrance of Jesus. Cup o Explain to families to take the cups from the center of the circle and pour the juice into them. o The juice is a reminder of Jesus’ blood – that is why it is dark red. o We are now going to partake of the cup. I will say something and you respond with, “His blood was poured out for me.” o Invite the people to partake, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.” o People respond o Drink the cup. CONCLUSION o Encourage everyone to wear their red strings of remembrance until Easter Sunday. They could be great discussion openers as they are out and about. Remind the children that the bread and the juice are a reminder of what Jesus did for us. o Sing a song or two o Prayer KidTrek© Palm Sunday 60 Sunday Plus Unit 7, Lesson 2 Kids’ Weekday Celebration KidTrek© Palm Sunday 61 Sunday Plus Unit 7, Lesson 2 Kids’ Weekday Celebration NOTE: Kids’ Weekday Challenge includes the parents this week. THE SHEMA FOCUS PALM SUNDAY Unit 7, Lesson 2 Objective Aim: Subjective Aim: Scripture: Memory Verse: The people praised Jesus when He rode into Jerusalem on a colt. Jesus, please give me the desire to praise You. Matthew 21:1-11; Luke 19:28-40; Mark 11: 1-10; Zechariah 9:9 “Yet to his son I will give one tribe, that David my servant may always have a lamp before me in Jerusalem, the city where I have chosen to put my name.” (1 Kings 11:36 ESV) Remember! Have everything set up Hand out paper and pens for prayer lists Remind people of prayer lists. CONNECTING (Be prepared to engage the first person to enter, 20MT) MATERIALS: 1 2 3 4 paper and pens Discussion starters below o If someone has something s/he is eager to share or questions s/he wants to ask allow him/her to go first. This is meant to be a time for the parents to cover issues with which they are dealing. What did you think of the Power Point on “Can The Bible Be Trusted?” What did your kids think of it? What are some ideas you came up with with your children of how you can use this information? i Has anyone been able to use it already? Have you thought of ways to keep these facts before your kids? If so what have you thought of? i Spend some time brainstorming ways to continually bring up these facts so the kids won’t forget them. KidTrek © Palm Sunday 62 Sunday Plus Unit 7, Lesson 2 The Shema Focus Remember! Thoughts are given to stimulate you as you prepare to lead the parents. Each week you are given the concepts with which the children are grappling that week. The aim is for children and parents to cover the same Biblical concepts. DIGGING INTO THE WORD (25 MT) MATERIALS: Bibles, CONCEPTS WITH WHICH KIDS ARE GRAPPLING THIS WEEK o This is a week of remembering. Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem. Mark 11:1-10 God vs. Pharaoh – Let My People Go! BIBLE FOCUS o Reality Check and Hearing The Word Kids experienced Jesus entering the church grounds and shouting Hosanna to Him. God hardened Pharaoh’s heart so he would keep refusing to let the Israelites go. Through the plagues that God then sent God showed His power. The final plague, the killing of the oldest son in every Egyptian home, brings us to the celebration of the Passover, which is when Palm Sunday took place. Note that the blood which was placed on the door of the homes of Israelites represents a cross. o Chat ‘N Chew They imagined what it would have felt like if they had lived during the time when Jesus entered Jerusalem. They talked about Palm Sunday being a day of celebration. They had a time of praise – using words connected to who God is. o Craft Kids made crosses from Palm fronds. CORPORATE WORSHIP o Skit: The skit was a set up to take the kids outside to see Jesus enter “Jerusalem.” o Discipleship Time The kids were encouraged to use their imaginations to create a movie in their minds as if they were in Jerusalem when Jesus came. They then shared with each other. They looked up Zechariah 9:9 in which Jesus’ triumphal entry to Jerusalem is foretold. FURTHER DISCUSSION/STUDY FOR PARENTS o Have a discussion on the secular vs. spiritual celebration of Easter. How should this be handled? KidTrek © Palm Sunday 63 Sunday Plus Unit 7, Lesson 2 The Shema Focus Does getting involved with the Bunny Rabbit keep our children from concentrating on the true meaning of Easter? How can the secular trappings be used to teach our children further about Jesus? 1 John 4: 1-9: How do we test the spirits in regard to holiday celebrations that get blended with the secular world? John 17 (particularly vs. 14 -15): Not of the world but in the world; protection from the evil one. PRAYER (15 MT) Have everyone get into groups of three for prayer, men with men and women with women. Use notes from Connecting. Pray for wisdom now and in the future in regard to secular vs. spiritual celebration of Easter and Christmas. Remember! COMMITMENT (15 MT) MATERIALS: paper and pens, Family Discipleship pages, Memory Verse pages Husbands and wives meet alone. Single parents Pair two single moms together and two single dads together. If there is one single father and one single mother the husband facilitator meets with the father and the wife facilitator meets with the mother. Hand out Family Discipleship pages so they can use as a guide in their planning. Encourage them to pray before they begin, asking the Lord for wisdom and direction in their planning. o What have you done in the past in regard to secular vs. spiritual celebration of Easter and Christmas? Think through how to seek God’s guidance for your family. Remind them to work at home with their kids on 1 Kings 18:21 Remind them to work at home with their kids on Truth or Desire. Jesus, please give me the desire to praise You. Matthew 21:1-11; Luke 19:28-40; Mark 11: 1-10; Zechariah 9:9 “Yet to his son I will give one tribe, that David my servant may always have a lamp before me in Jerusalem, the city where I have chosen to put my name.” (1 Kings 11:36 ESV) An Evening of Praise and Celebraton MATERIALS: list of names of Jesus PREP Recruit a neighbor to come to your home and hide the names of Jesus. This could be an awesome testimony – a family playing together, a family celebrating Jesus. Cut apart the names of Jesus and place in an envelope. Have the names of Jesus hidden Let the person hiding the slips know your parameters. THE ACTIVITY o Make this a time of great celebration. A time of praise of Jesus. o Show the kids a sample of what they will be looking for. They are small, which will add to the difficulty. Give them the parameters of where to look. o Set the length of time everyone has to hunt If a neighbor hid them everyone can be in the game. o You decide if there will be a reward more than the satisfaction of having found the most. o It doesn’t matter if they are all found. It might be fun to be finding them for weeks or months later. o When the timer goes off everyone gathers back together and counts how many each has found. o Take some deep breaths and have everyone relax from the fun and excitement. KidTrek © Palm Sunday 65 Sunday Plus Unit 7, Lesson 2 Family Discipleship DISCUSSION Have each person take turns reading through their strips. I praise you Jesus because you are _________________________________. (The Name of Jesus) You decide how many, if any of the scriptures you want to look up. Before beginning challenge the kids to speak the names of Jesus as a prayer. o Imagine that Jesus is sitting with your family and you are speaking to Him. SPIRIT MOMENTS As the Holy Spirit gives you opportunity to lift up the Triune God’s attributes be sure to do so in front of your kids. Encourage them to do so also. PARENTING TIPS 1 Praise vs. Thanksgiving Help your children to understand the difference between Praise and Thanksgiving. Praise is lifting up God. It is focusing on who He is and His attributes. The focus is off of ME and on God. Thanksgiving is being grateful for what God has done for ME. The focus is on both God and ME. We tend to do a great more thanking than praising. At dinner take a moment each evening to have each person thank Jesus for something from that day and praise Him for who He is. Keep the list of Jesus’ names where it is handy for the family to look at so the same name or attribute isn’t said over and over. 1 Parenting Tips are written by Wanda Parker, Founder/Director of KidTrek, from her experience as a Children’s/Family Pastor, but more importantly from raising three children who today have their own families all of whom walk with the Lord.
