LITTERING IN THE LODDON MALLEE
Did you know that three in ten people are happy to litter in a public place, young people are
more likely to litter while in a group and most smokers will litter their butts rather than use a bin?

for the environment, dangerous to wildlife and horrible to look at. Studies have shown that the
most common reason for littering is that people are simply too lazy to carry their rubbish to a
bin. They would rather drop their used items on the ground for someone (or something) else to
pick up rather than take it to the nearest bin or home. With the weather getting warmer and the
ground drying out, litter is also a fire risk. Throwing a lit cigarette out for the car window has
been known to cause bush fires and paper and other littered items are the perfect kindling.
