Don’t let fleas rule the roost!
If your dog/cat has managed to escape an invasion of fleas you have done very well, but if your
animal has a tendency to pick them up we’ve got just the things to eliminate the little creatures!
Fleas are what we call ectoparasites, so they live on or in the skin of an animal. They are wingless but with six
legs make them well adapted for jumping on and off your pet. Being a very active creature they may be tricky
to spot and in some cases only their faeces can be seen. It can cause intense itching and scratching, anaemia
and also a tapeworm infestation so if your pet does have them it is very important to tackle the fleas head on.
Not only do you need to treat the animal if they have fleas but due to their lifecycle you need to eradicate
any eggs which have been laid around your home. A thorough clean in all the cracks and crevasses and a
house flea spray/flea bomb should help to break this cycle. If your pet is clear from fleas keep on
with regular treatment as prevention is better than cure.
What can you put on your pet to protect them and kill the fleas?
There are two medicated products which we sell and they work in slightly different ways:
The first is Frontline®; this works when the flea bites the animal it dies, this also kills ticks.
The second is Advantage®; this works when the flea lands on the animal it dies so it works ‘on
contact’.
What products are available for erasing fleas/eggs from your house?
If you already have an infestation of fleas in your house, you need a spray which will work to kill
the flea at any stage of its life (from egg form through to the adult flea). The Bob Martin Flea
Spray, Virbac Indorex Spray and particularly Ardap Universal Pest Control continue to work
for up to six weeks after application (Ardap) and some for up to 12 months (virbac).
To completely eradicate the fleas from your house, hoover the carpet, skirting boards and sofa’s
before spraying.
As well as sprays, the Flea Bomb is also an excellent eradication method. It is similar to the
Mite Blitz Bomb as you ignite it in the middle of a room, leave it smouldering for an hour, this
releases smoke which gets into the crevasses you may not be able to reach- thus killing the flea
thoroughly.
