MUSON SCHOOL OF MUSIC AT A GLANCE
Founded in 1989 by the Musical Society of Nigeria
First, and so far the only School of its kind dedicated to basic through advanced level music
instruction
Accredited by the Federal Government to provide tuition in all orchestral instruments, voice
and piano, and to grant diplomas in music
Conduct graded Certificate examinations at various centres in Nigeria and neighbouring
countries
Represents the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) in Nigeria
Conducts ABRSM theory exams twice a year and practical exams once a year with the
external examiner.
Holders of appropriate grade certificates in practical qualify for exemption from practical
sections of the SSCE music as well as admission into polytechnics, colleges of education and
universities

Graduates admitted in higher music institutions in America, South Africa, Britain and Europe
Graduates are teaching in schools throughout Nigeria, are church musicians, performers of
serious and jazz music and music entrepreneurs
Annual competitions for primary and secondary school choirs and vocal instrumental soloists
Youth competition/concert during annual MUSON festival
Weekly student recitals and the access to Agip Recital Hall and Shell Nigeria Hall
Fully equipped library with tapes, CDs and DVDs for private and group listening and viewing
and stocks of reference books, magazines, music and computers with internet access all
guided by a full time Librarian/Musician.

THEORY OF MUSIC (Lessons are given strictly on Wednesdays except otherwise arranged
with a teacher)

EXAMINATIONS
1. Candidates may enrol for any grade examination without having previously passed a lower
grade; also, there are no age restrictions.
2. Entry forms showing table of fees are available at the MUSON School. Completed entry
forms with appropriate fees must be received at the School not later than one month to the
date of examination. Late entries will not be accepted.
3. Examination centres, dates and timetable will be announced after the last date of entry (in the
case practical examination).
4. Candidates are advised to adhere strictly to the timetable, as there will be no concession for
lateness and total absence. (However, candidates who are absent from examinations on
grounds of illness will be re-admitted for the same grades at subsequent examinations on
payment of half the fee but on production of medical report. If different grades are entered for,
the full fees for the new grades must be paid).
5. Candidates who don’t receive schedules by 15 th April or 15th October as appropriate should
make contact with the School with evidence of prior entry.
6. Albums containing Pianoforte set pieces for Preliminary – Grade VIII are available for
purchase at the MUSON School. Photocopies of set pieces will not be accepted at the
examination. The graded Music is available at the School of Music for other Instruments
7. Page-turners and accompanist must leave the examination room when their services are not
required. The examiner will not act as a page-turner or accompanist.
8. Where there is accompaniment for a solo piece, candidates must provide their own
accompanists who may remain in the room only while accompanying.
9. The examiner may stop the performance of a piece when he has taken a decision.
10.Candidates will not be required to play repeats unless otherwise directed by the examiner. Da
Capo should however, be played.
11.Candidates offering any practical subject beyond Grade Five will be required to have passed
ONE of the following examinations in the Theory of music:
♪ Grade Five, MUSON School of Music
♪ Grade Five, Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM)
♪ Grade Five, Guildhall School of Music and Drama
♪ Grade Five, Trinity College of Music
♪ Any other not listed but considered by MUSON School to be of comparable standard with the
above.
Evidence of eligibility must accompany enrolment for the practical exam.
12.Results are graded as follows:
 85% and Above Distinction
 75% - 84%
Merit
 65% - 74%
Pass
 64% and Below
Fail
13.The decision of the examiner is final and the School will not enter into
communications with regard to the conduct of examinations.

 Students must own an instrument (s) they wish to learn available for practice (MUSON does
not provide practice facilities)
Timings should be convenient for both the teacher and the student
