RSL AUCTIONS: CONDITIONS OF SALE
1. RSL Auctions acts as an agent for the seller. The contract for the sale
of the property is between the seller and the buyer. No statements
made within this catalog or made by a representative of or employee
of RSL Auctions shall be deemed to be a warranty, representation, or
assumption of liability with respect to the property’s age, condition,
size, quality, variety, importance, provenance, or historical relevance.
All property is sold “as is”.
2. All sales are final.
3. Buyers are responsible for satisfying themselves concerning
the condition of the property.
4. The Auctioneer will be solely responsible for determining the
bidding increments.
5. The Auctioneer will be the final judge in deciding which bidder
has won an item. In the event of a dispute, the auctioneer at his
discretion, shall decide whether to reopen bidding or not.
10. Payment may be made by cash, personal check or
credit card. A 23.5% buyer’s premium will be added
to all successful bids. A 3.5% discount will be
applied for payment made by cash or personal
check making the buyer’s premium 20%. RSL
Auctions reserve the right to hold all merchandise paid
by check until payment has been cleared by the bank.
This may take up to one month.
11. In the event property is not paid for in full, RSL Auctions may
pursue one or more of the following rights or remedies. A) charge
interest at 2% per month of the unpaid balance. B) hold the
defaulting buyer liable for the total amount due and commence
legal proceedings for its recovery together with interest, legal fees
and costs to the fullest extent permitted under applicable law.
C) Cancel the sale D) resell the property E) pay the seller the
amount up to the net proceeds payable in respect to the amount
bid by the default buyer minus one bid. F) Or to take such other
action as we deem necessary or appropriate.
6. Absentee Bids: If you are unable to attend the actual sale, RSL
Auctions are authorized to execute bids on your behalf if notified in
writing. Complete the enclosed Absentee Bid Form and return to RSL
Auctions BEFORE the absentee bid deadline of Friday, March 6, 2015.
A deposit of 20% of your total bids is required to confirm your bids.
In the event that property purchased by an absentee bid is not fully
paid for within 15 days of the sale, the 20% deposit will be forfeited
and the items may be resold. We can not accept “Buy” bids. In the
event that two identical bids are received, the first bid form received
by RSL Auctions will have preference.
12. Shipping may be arranged through RSL Auctions. A shipping
fee of $20 per lot, $80 per 5 lots or $150 per 10 lots is charged
plus the incurred postage and insurance. Shipped items may
take up to 45 days to be delivered. Contact shipper for

7. Phone Bids: Phone bids will also be accepted. To qualify for a
phone line the same procedure of authorization required for an
absentee bid is required. A backup bid in the event a party cannot
be reached by phone is not required, but strongly recommended.
There are a limited number of phone lines available. In the event
that there are more requests than lines available, preference will
go to the highest bidding parties. In the event, whether human
or technical, that a phone call is not made, disconnected or the
bidder can not be reached at the number left, the backup bid will
be executed. RSL Auctions cannot guarantee that phone bids will
be executed.
14. RSL Auctions reserve the right to refuse admission,
participation in or request the departure of any person/persons.
13. RSL Auctions are not responsible for any typographical errors
or omissions in this catalog or price key. Photographs in this
catalog are of the actual objects being sold but are not shown to
scale.

exemption is allowed under the laws regulating such tax.
Dealers must present a valid tax ID certificate in order

17. By bidding at auction, whether present in person or by agent,
by written bid, telephone or other means, the buyer indicates
acceptance of these Conditions of Sale.
9. All accounts are to be settled within 15 days of the end of the
sale.
18. The rights and obligations with respect to the Conditions of
Sale shall be governed by the laws of the state of New Jersey.

THE LORRAINE AND TOM SAGE SR.
COLLECTION OF GERMAN SPELTER BANKS
Tom Sage Sr. is a well-known antique toy and train dealer. He has always been among the leading
specialists for European Toys. The Sage’s have travelled to France, England, Belgium and Germany many
times during the last 35 years. They bought their first spelter bank in 1978 and have never looked back.
According to Tom, and we concur, it has become increasingly difficult to find great condition and great
themed German spelter banks. This collection has quality, rarity and charm throughout. It is a privilege
for RSL Auction Company to sell this collection on behalf of the Sage’s.
The majority of spelter and silvered lead banks were made in Germany from 1890 to 1935. Spelter is
extremely easy to mold and consequently the level of detail in these wonderful little banks is extraordinary.
With their vivid colors and finely cast details these banks were intended to look like the beautiful
creations from Vienna bronze foundries of the period. Their delicate nature, however, also made these
banks vulnerable to damage and destruction. Therefore, few of these banks have survived. The recently
released book aptly named “Painted German Spelter Banks” (PGSB) highlights many of the banks in this
sale. If the bank being sold is in the book we will reference it.

driving. The low chassis configuration and the torpedo shaped bonnet give

Here we find a very sophisticated still bank. Even though these spelter creations are quite small, they can often convey a great volume
of human emotion. At first glance, we see a pup lounging in his club chair and wearing his robe. One might reasonably assume that
he’s calm and comfortable. But investigate further and you will discern that this sweet soulful creature has a lot on his mind, as if
he’s contemplating the woeful trouble in the world. This is emphasized by the wringing of his fingers, by the arched eyebrows with sad
eyes and the visible pain expressed by his tragic down-turned smile. This unique bank is a masterpiece of sensitivity. A similar bank is

Collectors have named the taller version of the Lion & Monkeys Bank
the “Double Peanut” to reflect the shape of the knot in the tree.
To operate the bank, place your penny on the palm of the
monkey’s right hand. Then press the lever (tree root) and
he deposits your coin in the lion’s mouth.
The monkey springs forward to deposit the coin into the
organ grinder’s hurdy-gurdy.

The mechanism is similar to other Organ
Banks, but no revolving figures.
Put a coin in the tree branch and press the lever.
The owl’s head turns and the coin drops into the
aperture. Release the lever and his head snaps
back. The bank is scarce when the owl is grey.
The monkey doffs his hat in thanks for the penny
you have given him. The children rotate and the
bells chime when the crank is turned.

The Irish reached America’s shores after the potato famine of the early 1850’s.
Like all immigrants, they were seen as outsiders, and as such, became the
target of racist and bigoted humor. Here, the Irish “Paddy” is satirized as a
useless drunk who has lost control of his beloved pig. It would be decades
before Irish people were able to assimilate into the general population.
The rooster moves his head when lever
is depressed and coin is deposited.

elegant child’s toy. Note the extraordinary casting with
multiple folds and a ruffled collar for her Victorian dress.
Exquisite original condition. Very possibly it is the finest known
complete specimen. The table is marked “Patent No. 2841”.
The toy is 7.25” tall to the top of her chignon hairstyle.
Amazingly, it still works quite well.

Clown Seated at Sewing Machine
Germany - Circa 1890’s
To our knowledge, there are only three known
examples of this unusual toy. The presence of the
clown character seems rather obscure, but he may
be a representation of Canio, the Pagliaccio (clown)
character from Leoncavallo’s comic opera Pagliacci.
This opera made a huge sensation throughout Europe
when it premiered in the early 1890’s and the clown
character became much beloved by audiences.
On this one, the table is marked “Patent No. 4289”.
Again, it very probably is the finest known specimen.
Beautiful toys such as this only rarely come

AMERICAN CLOCKWORK TOYS
Louis Hertz, the pioneering collector, prolific researcher and renowned author of antique toys and banks,
reserved a place of honor for his discussion of the American clockwork toy industry. He affirms that these
miniaturized automated “Slices of Life” represented the highest level of achievement both in design and
function in the 19th century. Ironically, in the period, few children ever had the chance to enjoy their novel
and amusing charms because they were very expensive. Ives Blakeslee circulated a list of their wares
at the Centennial Exhibit in Philadelphia. The prices ranged from $2.00 to $5.00 an enormous sum of
money for 1876. Jerome Secor’s “Freedman’s Bank” was even more expensive, a whopping $7.50.
The Clockwork toy industry emerged in Connecticut where clock-making had flourished since the mid
18th century. Clock manufacturers such as Seth Thomas could provide an abundant supply of inexpensive
brass mechanisms to toy designers as a perfect drive engine for their fanciful and intricate creations.
George Brown, Stevens & Brown, Jerome Secor, Automatic Toy Works, Ives-Blakeslee and Merriam Mfg.
were among the most prominent players in the Connecticut toy industry.

Jerome Secor opened shop just after the Civil War as a sewing machine maker.
His talent for making clockwork mechanisms led him to designing a small series of toys.
He made a minstrel series that included the Bones Player, Sister Lucinda,
a Tambourine Player and a Banjo Player. These toys sold for about $8.00 each,
a vast sum of money in the day. Consequently, these toys are very rare
and highly sought after. This example works very well.

PAPER LITHOGRAPHED TOYS
Paper lithographed toys first appeared in the United States shortly after the Civil War. There was a
particular orientation to this type of toy production in eastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island because
of the profusion of printing presses and paper manufacturers in that geographic area. Early companies
include Bliss, W.S. Reed, Milton Bradley and McLoughlin. Later on, companies such as Mason & Parker,
Converse and Gibbs applied paper litho and decals to sheet tin and composite wood.
Lot 340 Base Ball Ten Pins

This rare and exquisite American toy was found recently at a flea market in northern England. It is absolutely mint condition
and it had been stored for more than a century in its original box. It seems that the ball players have rarely strayed from the box because
the lithography is as bright today as the day they were sold. This rare set of figural ten pins is particularly significant because they depict
men playing baseball; a favorite American spectator sport. There are only a handful of other known sets and a couple of isolated figures.
And none of those retain this extraordinary quality. This set also includes three original wooden balls that would have been rolled to knock
down the figures. The chromo-lithographed label for the lid of the box shows a ballgame in progress. The graphics are nothing less than
AMAZING. A second label on the side of the box reads “One Piece Base Ball, S & R (Selchow and Righter) Ten Pins”. This is one of the
greatest antique toys that RSL Auctions has ever sold and certainly the finest paper litho toy to ever be offered publicly.

AMERICAN TIN TOYS
Hand-painted tin toys represent the very earliest toy production in the United States. Industrial archives
have indicated that Francis, Field & Francis of Philadelphia had produced a line of toys to compliment
their other tole wares as early as 1831. By the 1860’s, several other tin toy companies had set up shop in
southern and central Connecticut. These included George Brown, Hull & Stafford and Merriam Mfg. James
Fallows and Althof Bergmann also became major players in tin toy manufacturing. These imaginative
little creations, with their simplistic designs and primitive silhouettes, have often been compared to folk
art, even though they were produced in a factory milieu.

Place a coin on the roof and pull the broom forward
causing the figure to flip over and kick the coin in the bank.
The “Calamity Bank” portrays collegiate football as it was played at the beginning
of the 20th Century. Wearing only nominal protective gear, many players sustained
serious injuries. President Teddy Roosevelt viewed this situation as very dangerous.
He planned to incorporate the abolition of collegiate football as part of his platform
re-election in 1904. It’s a good thing that his political advisors talked him out of it.

The “Darktown Battery” ranks among the most celebrated of all mechanical banks.
It’s sports theme, composition, vivid colors and dynamic action all contribute
to this wide popular appeal. Place a coin in the pitcher’s hand and press the lever.
He pitches the coin and the batter swings, but the coin sails so quickly by him that it
deflects off the chest protector of the catcher, dropping into the bank.

Lot 451 Perfection Registering Bank

No one has ever figured out the source of the inspiration for the imagery portrayed in the “Perfection” bank. Oliver Clark has convincingly suggested that
this may be an early interpretation of the characters from “The Wizard of Oz”, which was serialized in the newspapers at the time. After all, we do find a
“Dorothy” type young girl accompanied by a “Toto” like little dog standing upon what appears to be a “yellow brick road”. Also, there is a very stiff Sentry
(possibly meant to be the frozen TinMan) and a “Cowardly Lion” cowering at the corner of the bank. The little newsboy is interpreted as the “Scarecrow”
because he is shown running from the birds in the field.

Lot 452 The Bread Winner’s Bank

The Bread Winners Bank has long been regarded by bank collectors as one of the most historically significant banks ever produced. It derives its dynamic
imagery from the controversial debate that raged in the press as to the harmful nature of monopolies. It clearly references the Sherman Anti-Trust Act of 1886,
which enabled the federal government to break up and dismantle any businesses that were perceived as having disadvantageous monopolistic features. It also
alludes to the rise of unionism as depicted by the labor arbitrator who works tirelessly to reconcile the interests of factory ownership (capitalism) with the
humanistic needs (working conditions) of the work force. A full spectrum of socioeconomic stratification is portrayed in this cleverly conceived bank. Notice
the sheer muscular strength of the worker. He is portrayed as an immigrant, possibly one of Italian extraction. He earns his wages honestly, through hard
work and toil at his job. This is depicted by the “Honest Labor Bread” in which coin deposits are made. Contrarily, at the opposite end of the socioeconomic
spectrum, the factory owner is shown in a very nefarious light; his head emerging from a bag of money designated “Boodle, Steal and Bribery”.
All negative attributes suggesting that his money is earned in ill-begotten ways at the expense of his workers. Caught in the middle is the arbitrator,
who is presented to us as a Jewish man with his yarmulke, curling sideburns and beard. Ultimately, he is the “rascal” who flips over during the action
of the bank. A very superior example of the bank without any repair or restoration. Works well.

Once again, the frog pond besides the Steven’s foundry building must
have provided the humorous imagery for this playful bank. Place

eye cannot detect the movement of the coin into the bank. A truly
superior example of the bank and one of the finest that we have seen.

To our knowledge, only a handful of these unusual banks exist. The typical incised markings found on the tree stumps of a conventional Creedmore Bank
are not present on this rare variant. Additionally, the stumps themselves are slightly smaller and the figure is attached to the base in a different manner.
This example was converted to an alms box, possibly to collect funds for Civil War veterans. Another golden chance to acquire museum rarity.

in the early 1960’s. Undeniably, it is the
work of Charles Bailey, lead designer at J &
E Stevens during the period 1880 - 1895.
This is the exact same figure employed by
Bailey for his “Christmas Morn” bell toy
prototype and stylistically similar to the
figures on Old Aunt Dinah and the Fairy.

barrel. It is approximately 6.75” tall.

Organ Grinder and Performing Bear

There’s a sad and sensitive narrative that accompanies this bank. If you examine the bank carefully, you will find that the hurdy-gurdy player is actually a
Confederate soldier down on his luck. At the time this bank was available for sale the Civil War was long over. Nevertheless, the socioeconomic impact upon
the war’s participants would have lingering effects decades afterwards. This poor “Johnny Reb” lost his left leg in the war. You can glimpse his wooden
peg leg by looking under the organ. Tragically, he was compelled to train a bear to give shows for children to earn some wages.
There would be no more earnings from his plantation owing to his crippled state.

The Stump Speaker portrays a fancy
dressed dandy in outrageously colorful
clothes and top hat. He is a clear
representation of the carpetbagger;
the group of insidious Northern
outsiders who descended upon the
South after the Civil War. These
unscrupulous men came with very
dubious objectives. Today, the term
“carpetbagger” has come to mean
opportunism and exploitation by
outsiders. With his swollen cartoonish
head, he seems very comfortable
slipping your coins into his luggage.

This bank was produced to commemorate the
400th anniversary of the discovery of America.
The monochromatic gold and silver version was
available for sale as a souvenir at the Columbian
Exposition in Chicago in 1892-1893. Only a
scant handful of multi-colored examples have
been found over the years. It has been plausibly
speculated that Charles Bailey painted these
as a special order for the Board of Directors of
the World’s Fair Steering Committee. This is the
second finest known specimen.

Banks that depict children at play are very popular with collectors because they
evoke the wistful memories of childhood when one lolled the hours away in idle
pursuits. Here, a boy leap-frogs over his friends back when the lever is activated.
The monkey springs forward to deposit the coin into the organ grinder’s
hurdy-gurdy. This is a scarce painted variation with dark green base and
varied costumes for the organ grinder and monkey.

The Roller Skating bank is clearly evocative of a Victorian skating parlor. It is one of the most colorful and animated banks ever designed, making its appeal
to collectors very universal. However, it is extremely rare. Several high-powered examples have reached well beyond $100,000 at auction. Snap the competing
skaters into place at the front of the track. Press the button and they race to the back, where the girl is presented with a victory wreath of flowers.

Spain’s Armada, once renowned for its
naval prowess, was easily overtaken by
the sheer cannon might of the American
Army and its vast arsenal of weapons.

ship’s mast. Pull the cannon’s hammer
back and insert a wooden shell.

in the windows below when the shutters open.
