What a wonderful welcome I have had to Clayfield College! I
have been overwhelmed by the warmth and friendliness that has
been shown towards me as I begin my journey as Clayfield’s fifth
Principal. I am really looking forward to meeting as many members
of the College community as I can over the coming months and
finding out more about what makes this College such a special
place.
Graduating Students 2014
We are all very proud of our graduating students of 2014, who
have achieved outstanding results. Nearly 50% of the OP eligible
cohort received an OP within the 1-7 range – a wonderful result!
In addition, 27 girls successfully completed AQF Certificates and Diplomas in vocational education.

The College community was deeply saddened to hear of the recent passing of the second Principal
of Clayfield College (1964-1990), Miss Ida Kennedy OAM (1925-2014). Under Miss Kennedy’s
leadership, Clayfield College underwent a rapid program of expansion including a new Science
block, a separate Primary Department, a new Boarding School in Gregory Street, new tennis courts
and the current Assembly Hall. The green and white striped uniform was introduced in 1973.
Administration Hours
The Boarders’ Recreation Room was built in 1979 and in 1980 the Music Centre was opened. In
1984 the new swimming pool was opened and new classrooms constructed in both the Junior and
Secondary Schools. The Chapel was erected in 1985. Miss Kennedy retired in 1990 after 26 years of
outstanding service.

During the holiday break, the campus was a hive of activity as work continued on upgrading
the College’s facilities. Our wonderful new P-12 Learning Resources Centre is on track to be
completed by the end of Term 2 and we are looking forward to moving in by the beginning of

A huge thank you is owed to Business Manager Moira Grant, Maintenance Manager Ken Clifton
and all their teams for coordinating these works that have made a huge improvement to our
campus.
Information Technology
The Information Technology team has risen to the challenge of implementing the migration
to Microsoft and the rollout of the Surface Pro 3 tablets for staff. This has been a massive task,
and is a major step forward in the implementation of the College’s technology program. There
has been a great deal of infrastructure work conducted in the background to upgrade the
wireless network, the switches, and the disaster recovery server. The College has also engaged
an improved internet service provider. The existing laptops have been reimaged as we move to
Windows 8, and new computers have been installed in the technology classrooms.
The Information & Communications Technology Steering Committee will continue to meet
regularly to identify and develop training and professional development sessions to assist all
staff to utilise our new technology to achieve the very best teaching and learning outcomes. The
Committee will also monitor the rollout of the new IT “Parent Lounge”.
Thank you to all the administration, maintenance and IT staff who have worked so hard over the
holidays. Clayfield College Council remains committed to upgrading and improving our facilities
and resources to ensure that everyone in our community can benefit from a stimulating and
productive teaching and learning environment.
The College will enter a new phase of master planning in 2015. Exciting times are ahead!

Junior, Middle & Senior Schools
In keeping with the practice that is common in many schools with a three sub-school structure,
we will be phasing out the word “schooling”. Our three sub-schools will now be known as Junior,
Middle & Senior Schools (rather than Junior, Middle & Senior Schooling). Over the coming
months, we will be making changes to our documentation, however, the new terminology will
come into effect immediately.

We are delighted to welcome the following new permanent staff to Clayfield College this
term: Mrs Tara Franklin (Head of Careers), Mr Wayne Cross (Assistant Head of Junior Schooling:
Pastoral), Ms Natalie Stinson (Senior Mathematics Teacher), Miss Carole Berry (Spanish/English
Teacher), Ms Perrie Bourke (Junior Art Teacher), Mr Tim Opstelten (Coordinator of Bands) and Mrs
Natasha Moore (English Teacher).
New staff on contracts include: Mrs Tania Fisher (Acting Head of LOTE), Mrs Sam Paxton (Visual
Art & IMT Teacher), Ms Sarah Ferguson (Business/ESL Teacher), Mrs Nicky de Luca (Year 5), Mrs
Jodie Tawfeeq (Year 2), Mrs Maree Warner (Prep) and Ms Alison Wakeford (Year 6).
This term, we also welcome back Ms Christine Barnes and Mrs Josephine Simpson from long
service leave, as well as Mrs Julie Davies and Mrs Kate Stassen from maternity leave.
For the duration of 2015, Mrs Lois Kavanagh has moved to the role of Head of Senior School
(Acting), whilst Mr Richard Hardy is Head of Learning Development (Acting).
Congratulations go to Mrs Rachel Jones who has been appointed Head of Radcliffe House and
Ms Madeleine Jones who has been appointed Head of Visual Art.
Australian of the Year Awards: Australia’s Local Hero 2015 (National Recipient)
Congratulations to our amazing Clayfield College mother Juliette Wright (Hudson, Year 1 and
Sara, Year 3), who was named Australia’s Local Hero of the Year at the Australian of the Year
Awards.
Driven, inspired and ambitious, Juliette is on a mission to alleviate the effects of poverty across
Australia. Establishing an online platform in 2009 to connect those who “have” with those who
“need”, Juliette is changing the face of how society helps its most vulnerable and marginalised
people. Founder and Chief Executive Officer of GIVIT, Juliette created a portal to ensure quality
goods get to where they are most needed by safely connecting and inspiring an online network
of givers.
Juliette’s vision, hard work and determination has resulted in donations of more than 126,000
items to disadvantaged members of the Australian community. Juliette’s passion is supporting
communities by ensuring local donors give to local residents in need. In 2011, when Queensland
was hit by devastating floods, GIVIT became the state government’s official website for matching
donors and recipients – with 1.8 million hits resulting in 33,500 goods matched in three weeks.
Juliette’s positive ‘can do’ attitude inspires others to embrace philanthropy and she has just
launched GIVIT Kids, a safe online platform for children to give new or pre-loved belongings.
Well done Juliette – you are an inspiration to us all!

information-overload age, we are keen not to bombard our families with too much information
too often. We hope that it will be easier for you to find the time to read a fortnightly newsletter,
rather than a weekly one.
P & F Welcome Night
Parents, staff and friends celebrated a fabulous Welcome Night hosted by the P&F on Friday 30
January. Thank you so much to everyone involved in organising this wonderful event. I really
enjoyed the opportunity to meet with different groups of parents and College community
members who, in turn, all shared with me what they value and treasure about Clayfield, as well
as their hopes for its future. It is very apparent to me that the “heart and soul” of Clayfield is the
amazing sense of community and care that is evident throughout all that is done here– and this
must always be treasured!

2016 Academic Scholarships
A number of Academic Scholarships are awarded to
students entering the College in Year 7 or Year 11 in 2016
and are based on a student’s performance in the annual Cooperative Scholarship Testing Program conducted by ACER.
If you are interested in having your daughter sit for the scholarship
test, please register online at www.clayfield.qld.edu.au (go to the
Enrolments & Scholarships – click on the Scholarships page), by
no later than Monday 9 February 2015. The Registration Fee is
$110.00.
The scholarship examination will be held on Saturday 28 February
2015 at Clayfield College commencing at 8.45 and finishing at approximately 12.00noon. Details
regarding Scholarship tests will be forwarded to families prior to the day.
Clayfield College is pleased to offer scholarships at the following levels:
CSTP Level 1 is designed for students in their final year of primary school during 2015 for entry
into the first year of secondary school (Year 7 in Qld) in 2016.
CSTP Level 3 is designed for students entering Year 11 in 2016.

This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and
only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is
love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his
Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. (1 John 4:9-10)
In the Old Testament we often read the words “Do not be afraid!”
when God speaks to people. This is because God was seen as
remote and to be feared. It was not until God took the initiative
and came amongst us in Jesus Christ that humanity was given
a fuller understanding of the nature of God. Jesus showed us
that forgiveness, grace and mercy are at the heart of God. We
cannot earn God’s favour and we do not need to; God loves us
and wants to be in relationship with us. We have no need to fear.
Welcome to another College year and a special welcome to new families who have joined our
community. I hope you quickly feel at home with us.
Our Interschool Christian Fellowship (ISCF) groups meet this week. We have two groups; Years
6-8 and Years 9-12. Both groups met on Tuesdays at lunchtime and everyone is most welcome
to come along and join the fun. These groups offer the opportunity to mix with girls from other
year levels, to have some fun together and to ask questions about faith and explore spirituality
in a relaxed environment.
This term we have two ISCF social events combined with several other schools. On Saturday 14
February from 6pm-10pm there is a Dive-In Dance Party to be held at the Moreton Bay College
pool. This is for any students in Years 7-12. If your daughter would like to attend please ask them
to speak to Mrs Back, Mrs Ward or me so we can issue an invitation via Parent Lounge for you to
complete giving them permission to participate. Alternatively you can email me with this request.
The second combined activity will be Ice Skating on the evening of Saturday 28 February. More
information about that will be available in the coming weeks.

Head of Senior School
On Assembly this week I spoke with the students about the
difference between a new year and a fresh year. We looked at
the origin of the names of the months and found that some
were named after numbers- September- septem (7), October –
octo (8), November- novem (9) and December –decem (10). We
noted that these numbers do not correspond to their place in
the sequence of months in our year. In the Julian calendar for
which these names were assigned, the first month of the year
was in fact March.
So how we divide up time is arbitrary. What is really important
is that we do mark the passing of time, so that we can celebrate
what has been achieved and anticipate what is coming in the
future. It is important to us in terms of our mental health to know
that we have a new year because we equate it emotionally with new beginnings.
The New Year represents a fresh start where we can put the old year behind us, whether it be
bad or good, and move forward with a sense of being refreshed. I wished all students a “Happy
Fresh Year”- one that is ready for them to make of it what they will. I hope that all our Senior
students will make it a positive one, full of academic and personal achievements and memorable
experiences.
I also face a fresh start this term in my role as Head of Senior Schooling. I am delighted
to be taking on the challenges of this role and am looking forward immensely to
working closely with our Senior students and their families. I would like to continue to
celebrate and share with the College community the many achievements of our Senior
students. To assist me to do this, I am inviting you, their parents and caregivers, to share
with me the achievements of your daughters, in whatever field of endeavour- sport,

Head of Middle School
Enrichment Learning
Above and Beyond activities in Middle Schooling aim to challenge
and enhance students’ experiences. Through self-identified
‘projects’ students are able to test and extend themselves in
meaningful and unique ways. Individuals and/or groups of students
are encouraged to examine and present on themes that express
their passions and interests. Students are invited to nominate
themselves for participation in the Above and Beyond Program.
The Above and Beyond Program is an extra-curricular activity.
Students pursue their projects during lunchtimes and during
‘out of school’ time. Students determine the constraints of
their projects. Such constraints could include time allocation,
resources, objectives, etc. Students’ creativity, imagination, skills and knowledge will determine
the project’s final outcomes.
Participation in the program will challenge students intellectually, and help develop their
individual talents. The program also aims to facilitate positive social interaction with like-minded
peers.
Students’ completed projects are shared with their mentor, Head of Middle Schooling and other
invited people. Above and Beyond Awards are presented to recipients at Assembly.

The Andrews Cup Competition is an interschool sporting competition for girls in Years 2
– 6. The Andrews Cup Association now comprises of 10 members schools that share similar
values and traditions, with respect to the active participation of primary girls in healthy sporting
pursuits, through a one day carnival style competition.
2015 presents many changes to the structure of the Andrews Cup sports with Year 7 transiting
from the Andrews Cup program to the QGSSSA program, as Year 7 is now formally recognised as
the first year of Secondary School.

As of 2015 all Year 2 students, regardless of age, will be affiliated and therefore eligible to
participate in the Andrews Cup program.
Here is an outline of the Andrews Cup Sports and the age requirements for each of these.

All sports are played in a one-day competition format, and these competitions are held on
a school day and are spread throughout the year. The brochure that you received when you
entered, outlines the competitions dates for each of the sports.
The number of teams and competitors that we enter for each of these Andrews Cup Sports is
dependent on:
• The number of students who try out for the sport
• The ability levels of the girls who try out
• The rules and regulations set by the Andrews Cup Association due to facility and time
logistics; for example, the number of lanes in a pool or the number of touch football fields
available

How does your daughter become involved in Andrews Cup Sport?
Information to students about Andrews Cup Sports is communicated through core teachers
and the Junior School Croc Board, which is located in the Amphitheatre. Students are asked to
check the Croc Board for notices regarding trials, trainings, meetings, results and team selections.
For each of the Andrews Cup Sports, a meeting will be called for all interested students. At this
meeting students will be given an information letter outlining trial dates and times, training
times, competition dates etc.

Andrews Cup Metro Meets
In 2015, Clayfield College girls in Years 2 – 6 will have the opportunity to participate in a range of
Andrews Cup Metropolitan (Metro) Meets. The Andrews Cup Association has, in the past, been
the provider of an informal lead-in season to the formal Andrews Cup competition events. The
Andrews Cup Metro Meets will formalise these lead-in events.
The Metro Meets will run under the umbrella of the Andrews Cup Association and will focus
on skill development, with increased opportunities for student participation and competition.
As well as the Andrews Cup Schools, St Peters and All Hallows’ School have been invited to
participate in these meets. The Metro Meets Program will provide lead-in events in the following
sports: Swimming, Cross Country, Athletics, Touch Football and Netball.
City District Sport
Although not directly related to the Andrews Cup Competition, I felt that it was important to
briefly explain Clayfield College’s links with City District Sport, which is a pathway to Met North,
Queensland and Australian Sport Representation.
This year Clayfield College has taken over the hosting role for City District Sport. There are 50
affiliated state and private schools in the Brisbane City District. Clayfield College sends students
along to City District trials for a range of different sports. These trials are for students who are
performing at a high level in their chosen sport and we are only able to send a very small number
of students along to each of these trials.

From the 6-8 March 2015, Sports Tuition is running an exclusive Clayfield College Father/ Son
Fishing Weekend at Camp Lake Fire, Maroon Dam.

2015 China Tour
After such a successful trip to China last year, we are again organising a Study Tour for all
interested Year 5, 6 and 7 Clayfield College students to visit Beijing, China in October 2015. Thank
you to those parents who expressed an interest in their child participating in this tour. The study
tour and cultural exchange will occur from Saturday, 10 October until Sunday, 18 October 2015.
If you are interested in knowing more about how your child can participate in this wonderful
opportunity please come along to our 2015 China Tour Information Night on Wednesday 11
February at 6:00pm in the Chapel where you will be provided with more detailed information.

Students were welcomed back to the College on Wednesday,
though new students, Year 7s and Year 11s were already here
on Tuesday for their Orientation Morning. Middle and Senior
School students went into their House Pastoral Care Groups
after Assembly and then were straight into academic classes
after morning tea. ID photographs were taken on Wednesday,
but anyone who missed out will have a second chance when
House photographs are taken on Tuesday 12 February.
Forms to Return

A number of forms need to be returned, generally to Student
Services:•
Years P-12: permission slip for all excursions and travel
was mailed to new students and emailed to continuing students. The latter should return
it to Student Services.
Years 8 and 10: immunisation forms should be returned to Student Services
Year 12: Senior Formal contract – students will not be able to attend the Formal unless this document has been signed by student, partner and parents. Forms can be collected from, and returned, to Mrs Knott in the Head of House office.
Helping new students
You will also be receiving forms, or advice about using Parent Lounge, related to extra-curricular
activities if your child is interested in participation.
Presentation and Punctuality
As part of the College’s expectations regarding presentation and in readiness for the school day,
parents and caregivers are asked for their support in a number of ways.

students are required at the College by 8:20am each morning, allowing time for them to
move to classrooms for roll call, important notices and general organisation. Students in
Years 7-12 who arrive late will automatically be given an infringement. If there is a legitimate
reason for the late arrival, a note signed by parent or caregiver or an email can be sent to
the relevant Head of House the next day to overturn the infringement. Infringements will
also be issued for any uniform breach.

please check that your student’s uniforms meet required standards. As well as checking
the length of girls’ dresses (which should reach to the bottom of the knee) and boys’ shirts
(which should be long enough to tuck in), please also check that sports uniforms are
complete including sports shorts (bike pants can only be worn by girls under sports shorts

Campbell gets organised
Years 7-12 Interhouse Swimming
The Carnival will be held at the Valley Pool Thursday 19 February. The emphasis is on involvement
so all students are expected to participate in at least one event and will, of course, be part of the
war cry performance. Students should wear sports uniform, including hat, to and from school,
and will be transported by bus to the pool. Students should bring lunch, snacks and plenty of
water to drink since the day is usually hot.

Head of Learning Development P-12
I would like to sincerely welcome students and parents back to
a new school year. I am very excited to be given the opportunity
to be the Head of Learning Development. Students chose their
subjects for 2015 some time ago and some have had time to
think over the holiday break to reflect on their choices and have
requested changes on their return to school. We are keen to
finalise subject selection by the end of Week 2, so if your child
is considering a change of subject could they please make it
a priority to come and see me to discuss it. After this deadline
students in Years 7 to 10 will remain in their chosen subjects for
the year. Students in Year 11 will need to remain in a subject
until the end of Semester One.
We congratulate our Year 12 graduates on once again achieving
excellent academic results. This year we are particularly proud, as almost 50% of the cohort
achieved an OP within the 1-7 range. We also congratulate the 27 girls who successfully
completed AQF Certificates and Diplomas in vocational education.
Important Events
Middle School Information Evening: On Thursday 5th of February Middle School parents are
invited to attend an information evening where they will have an opportunity to talk to teachers
and Heads of Department and to see examples of the curriculum at work.
Academic Awards Assembly: On Wednesday 11th of February we celebrate our students’
academic success from Years 3 through to 12 for their academic achievements in 2014. This will
take place in the PE centre and parents and guests are invited to be seated by 8:30 am.
Senior Studies Information Evening: On Thursday 12th of February Senior students and
parents are invited to attend an informative evening about all things relevant to those studying
Year 11 and 12. Year 10 students and parents are also strongly encouraged to attend. Topics that
will be covered include:

Head of Boarding
Boarders are settling into the routine of being away from home, many for the first time. The first
week is filled with the business of finding their way around the College and Boarding House,
meeting up with new and old friends, new uniforms for both new and returning boarders – it’s
amazing how much girls can shoot up during the Christmas holidays – and working out the best
ways to contact friends and family.
Homesickness is a genuine and extremely sad feeling and is something very hard to overcome.
Both new and returning boarders suffer and we endeavour to work through this with care,
compassion and understanding.
Boarders are kept very busy in the first week to try to take their minds off what they are missing.
We started the week with an orientation of Brisbane where we travelled by public transport to
Toombul and the city and returned to Clayfield via the Citycat and the College bus. We ended our
week with the annual trip to Wet n Wild. Boarding Houses from all over South East Queensland
attend this special day. The girls get to catch up with old friends attending different schools.

We then have a fire and lock down drill to end the day. Boarders are well drilled with how to
evacuate safely and how and where to go in the case of an emergency.
Activities for this term will include a trip to the beach, socials with other boarding schools, visits
to the movies, ice skating and hopefully a trip to Australia Zoo.
The Nurse is holding a clinic daily in boarding and the Doctor is visiting twice a week, Tuesdays
and Thursdays, for any girls needing medical treatment or advice. The Psychologist also returns
to hold her sessions one morning a week.
There are 30 new boarders and we are looking forward to a wonderful year. The mood in
boarding is one of excitement and happiness and we would like to keep this feeling flowing.
If any day girl parent would be happy to help us with transporting girls to their various sporting
or social activities we would really appreciate it. We encourage all boarders to participate in as
much as they can and sometimes we need assistance getting them there.

Welcome to 2015
A very warm welcome back to all of our music families as well as a special welcome to all of our
new families! We are looking forward to a very exciting year for Music in 2015. The music staff is
looking forward to working with our parents and students throughout the year. With so many
wonderful events on the calendar it promises to be another fantastic year for Clayfield Music.
We encourage you to become involved in this spectacular program through attendance at the
many concerts, competitions and as part of the Music Support Group. We enjoying working with
our parents to make Clayfield Music the best it can be!
Staffing
Mr Tim Opstelten joins us in 2015 as our Co-ordinator of Bands. Mr Opstelten has been working at
Brisbane Boys College and Moreton Bays Girls College and brings to the band program a wealth
of experience as a performer and teacher. He will be working at Clayfield College on Monday,
Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and will undertake the direction of all the bands including the
Stage Band and Brass Ensemble. Mr Opstelten will also be touring with the band in September
this year. He will be in contact with all band parents in the coming weeks. You are very welcome

Miss Kerri-Anne Looi will be joining us as our percussion teacher this year. She will also undertake
the direction of the Percussion Ensemble.
Ms Sally Christiansen joins us as the Director of Clayfield Choristers in 2015. Ms Christiansen is an
Old Girl of Clayfield College and she is looking forward to working as part of the Clayfield College
community this year.

Private Lessons
Private instrumental/vocal lessons will commence for continuing students in Week 2. Invoices
for continuing students were emailed home at the conclusion of Week 1. New students to
Clayfield College and students who will be commencing lessons with a new teacher will receive

Band News
A reminder to any students who did not audition for placement in a band at the end of 2014
that you will need to see Mr Opstelten in the Music Annex this week. All band and chamber
ensemble rehearsals will commence in Week 3. Any new student to the College who has not
yet auditioned for placement in a band/chamber ensemble please come up to the Music Annex
and meet Mr Opstelten to arrange an audition time.
Private tuition is available on woodwind, brass, percussion, piano and voice. Please contact Mr
Opstelten if you are interested in undertaking private tuition this year.
String News
Any student wishing to undertake private lessons on a string instrument in 2015 should contact
Ms Tobin on 3262 0417 or [email protected] as soon as possible. Any students who
have not yet auditioned for placement in an ensemble for 2015 will need to contact Ms Tobin
by the end of Week 2.
All new string students to the College should have signed up for an audition in the Music Chalet.

Choir News
Mezzo Choir,Campo della Voci, Clayfield Choristers and Senior Choir sign-up sheets are now
outside the Music Department staffroom. Any student who would like to participate in a choir
this year will need to sign-up by the end of Week 2. All students are very welcome!
Ciao Bella and Canzona auditions are being held on Wednesday 4 February at 3.15pm. Ciao
Bella students (Years 7 and 8) will need to sign-up on the sheet outside the Music Department
staffroom. Canzona students (Years 9-12) will also need to sign up on the audition sheet outside
the staffroom before the auditions next week.

Careers & Vocational Education
I have just started at Clayfield College replacing Ms Amber Shaw as the Head of Careers and
Vocational Education. Previously I was at St Paul’s School, Bald Hills for 12 years. The beginning
of a new school year always brings fresh thought and ideas and I welcome any student to come
to the Careers Centre and chat about their future career and study pathways. Over the year, I will
be providing Careers and Vocational Study information for various year levels to help them make
informed choices and learn to manage their career journey.
Changes to the Tax File Number Program for 2015
Students will need a TFN for employment, applying for Centrelink benefits, opening a bank
account or deferring university fees. I recommend that ALL Year 12 students obtain a TFN before the
end of Term 3 so they are well organised prior to leaving the College. Sadly the Secondary Schools
Tax File Number (TFN) Program will not continue beyond 31 December 2014. This means that
School TFN forms will no longer be processed beyond this date.
How students can apply for a TFN from 1 January 2015
The Australian Taxation Office in partnership with Australia Post is making it easier for individuals
to apply for a TFN. Students can now apply for a TFN online and have their identity verified
through an interview at a participating Australia Post office.
Applying online is the fastest and most convenient way for students to get a TFN. More
information on applying online can be found at ato.gov.au by searching for ‘QC27248’.
Students who are unable to visit a participating Australia Post office will need to complete the
application form Tax file number - application or enquiry for individuals form (NAT 1432). More
information about lodging this form can be found at ato.gov.au by searching for ‘QC22604’.

Caitlin Large competed in 7 individual races and 2 club relays for Commercial Swim Club
at the Queensland Long Course Championships in December. Caitlin achieved personal
best times in all races including the 800m & 400m freestyle. This was the first time she has
swum these in a major event. Caitlin finished the meet with a silver medal in the 200m
Breaststroke – taking 2.46sec off her personal best. She will now compete at the National
Age championships in Sydney in April. Congratulations on great results.
Sacre Coeur Tennis 7 & 8 February 2015
Clayfield College will host this tennis tournament in Brisbane this coming weekend. The teams
will play matches over the two days at Shaw Park Tennis courts and Clayfield College. The teams
will be supervised by Clayfield staff member Mrs Lynne Browne (0417424675) and the Shaw Park
tennis coaches.
As host we are required to provide morning tea on both Saturday and Sunday. We ask all players
to please bring along a plate of morning tea to share such as fruit, sandwiches etc. Students will
also need their own lunch for Saturday, a water bottle and sunscreen.
All students must arrive at venues on both Saturday and Sunday mornings by 7.45am. If there
any boarders who require transport, please let Mrs Browne know as soon as possible. Daygirl
parents are please asked to provide transport after Saturday morning matches from Shaw Park
to Clayfield College. We ask that you please collect your daughter from the College by 5.30pm
on Saturday and by 1.30pm from Shaw Park on Sunday.
Consent forms will be sent home with participants. Please return to Mrs Browne (Rm 1) by
Thursday 5, February 2015.

QGSSSA Softball
Training will be held this Thursday afternoon at Downey Park from 3.30 – 5.00pm. The College
bus will transport girls to and from the venue, arriving back at the College at approximately
5.30pm. The QGSSSA Senior softball season for students in Years 10 – 12 will commence this
Saturday at Downey Park. Both teams will wear the College softball shorts or green PE shorts
with bikepants or sliders underneath, the yellow softball socks and College cap. All girls are
asked to arrive at the venue and meet under the large trees near the main carpark by no later
than 6.45am. A bus for boarders will depart at 6.20am. Students must please see Mrs Price if you
are unable to attend training.

QGSSSA Gymnastics
Training for QG gymnastics will commence this Wednesday morning from 6.30 – 8am. A list of
girls who have made the training squad will be posted on the Croc Board. We are still seeking
more Yr 7 and 8 gymnasts to fill our teams. No previous experience is necessary, as we cater
for a range of ability levels. A keen interest or some previous dance experience are all that are
needed. Students should see Mrs Price if they are interested but missed the first trials. Training
will be held on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday mornings from 6.30 – 8.00am. Some gymnasts may
not be expected to attend all of these if they are already doing club training. The coaches will
decide this and inform students of when they are required to attend. The QGSSSA competition
will be held on Wednesday 29 April in the Clayfield College PE centre as we are the host school

QGSSSA Swimming
Welcome to the 2015 season and thank you to the girls who participated in time trials last
Friday. We now only have 4 weeks until the QGSSSA Championships on Wednesday March 4 for
girls to attend training and improve racing technique and times. Training is held Monday and
Wednesday morning from 6.30am – 7.30am and also Tuesday and Thursday afternoons 4.30pm
– 5.30pm. We encourage girls to attend 2 sessions per week. Wednesday is our team breakfast
morning.
The first swim meet is being held this Friday February 6 at Somerville House. Bus transport is
provided to and from the meet but girls must sign the bus sheet on the Croc Board to ensure
a seat. Girls must travel to the meet in their College uniform. It is anticipated to return to the
College at 7.30pm on Friday. All swim squad members have received a booklet of information
and expectations. Any swimmer who has not yet collected a booklet can email awoodward@
clafyield.qld.edu.au to receive an electronic copy.
We are still urgently looking for swimmers who are 12 years, 16 years and 17 years so please talk
to Ms Woodward if you can step up to swim a 50m freestyle relay event and help the College.
QGSSSA Cross Country
Wow what a great start to the season this week with lots of keen runners at our first training
session. We offer training each weekday morning, apart from Wednesday. Girls from Year 7 to
Year 12 can participate by meeting in front of the tuckshop at 6.40am ready to start running at
6.45am. Girls must wear their HPE uniform or “7” singlet and College bike pants. All runners must
bring a water bottle and some food to eat after training for recovery which is an essential part of
our program. Runners can also use the showers by the College pool after training.
This year we also intend to participate in some free Park Run events at New Farm Park. You can
read about Park Runs online or girls can speak to Ms Woodward to register.
Cross Country is a great sport for fitness which also aids concentration in the classroom. It is also
an excellent form of cross training particularly for Touch, Football, Netball and Hockey. For more

QGSSSA Cricket
Trials have commenced this week for girls in Years 7 to Year 12. No previous experience is
required to trial for cricket. Matches commence Wednesday February 4 with the draw listed
on the Croc Board. Girls participating in matches must wear the correct uniform as advised
at training sessions and must also wear the College sports cap at all fixtures. Bus transport is
provided to and from all fixtures which are played from 4.00pm – 6.00pm at various venues. This
week the Open team is playing at Shaw Park, Shaw Rd, Wooloowin and the Division 1 team is
playing against Somerville House at Kianawah Park, Wynnum Rd. Tingalpa. Girls must have 1 litre
of water and a snack to eat at all fixtures.
Cricket parents are asked to please send an email to [email protected] so that the
draw and fixture information can be sent to you. Additionally information on match venues will
also be posted on the Clayfield app.
QGSSSA Touch

7 to Year 12. Trials and skills development will continue for 2 weeks and then teams will be
finalised. Girls do not need to have previous experience with Touch but must be able to commit

Extracurricular Activities
Debating
Debating is underway for 2015. All interested students in Years 8-12 should have collected a
letter from Mrs Franklin. The letter outlines expectations and dates and includes the topics for
first round debates and coaches seminars.
All parents are warmly invited to a welcome function hosted by the Debating Support Group
at 6:30 p.m 9th February. The welcome will be followed by the first DSG meeting for the year at
which President Mr Kerry Hassall and the Debating Coordinator will outline plans for the year.
ISCF
Inter School Christian Fellowship (ISCF) is an extra-curricular group which meets on Tuesday
lunchtimes. There are two groups: Years 7-8 join Mrs Ward, our Associate Chaplain and the Years
9-12 group is a student run group supported by Rev Yarrow, our College Chaplain and Mrs Back,
the ISCF Coordinator. All girls are welcome to attend these groups.
Meetings take the form of interactive activities, some spiritual input and the opportunity to
enjoy company across year levels in a supportive Christian environment. There are also socials
with other schools throughout the year and a camp in May. These events give our Clayfield girls
the opportunity to mix with students from other schools and over the years, firm friendships
have been made.

I would like to extend a very warm welcome to all our new parents, carers and students and
welcome back all our returning families.
I hope that many of you were able to attend the celebration of the start of the 2015 school year
on Friday night. This is a very special event for our Clayfield College community and it was a great
opportunity to meet our new Principal, Ms. Melissa Powell. Thank you to all the members of staff
who were able to join us for the night and the numerous volunteers who helped with set up,
manning of the welcome tables and bar and the clean-up at the end of the night! A special thank
you to the busy Maintenance Team for their assistance, together with Tracey Blacka and Jackie
Upton for their administrative support and all those who helped to make this a fantastic evening!
Clayfield has a system of class coordinators in Junior School and Year Level Parent Coordinators in Middle and Senior School. These parents are there to help, so if you have any
questions please feel free to contact them. Their details will be circulated to you shortly.
I hope all our new parents and carers will consider getting involved in our wonderful Clayfield
College community. Tuckshop and College Shop have once a month rosters where you can help
out for just a few hours or you can join one of our support groups – Debating, Music, Junior and
Sport, depending on your child’s interests. We are also looking for volunteers to be involved in the
organisation of the Clayfield College Fair – a new and exciting event scheduled for August 2015.
The P&F holds meetings once a month on the third Tuesday starting with drinks at 7pm
in the Pool Centre followed by our meeting at 7.30pm. Our first meeting will be Tuesday
March 17 so keep your eye out for more details regarding our guest speaker for the evening.

Junior Support Group
Happy New Year from the Junior Support Group !
For those new families my name is Antoinette Aquilina, I am the president of the Junior Support
Group. Our aim is to hold family and child focussed events that create a strong sense of
community for the Junior School. Along the way we raise funds for things for the school and this
year we will be donating funds to a local charity. In 2014 we raised in excess of $ 23, 000 for the
interactive wall in the soon to be completed Library Resource Centre.
So I personally offer you an invitation to come along and be part of a very motivated group of
parents called the Junior Support Group.

How can I get involved ?
This year we are asking each and every parent in the Junior School to do “ just one thing “, whether
it be big or small, a lot of time or a small amount of time – everything helps. You may consider
being a Class Coordinator, a member of the Dads Club or nominating yourself to help with an
event this year.
What is the Class Coordinator Role ?
Every class in the Junior School this year will have three class coordinators. Their role is to run
events within their class. Consider becoming one of these if you are new, we also welcome some
of our veteran class coordinators to re-enlist for another year.
What is the JSG Dads Club
This year we have a newly established Dads Club that will be involved in Sausage Sizzles and help
support some of our events – Come on Dads now it’s your turn !
How do I volunteer to assist ?
We will be taking names of volunteers to help out and for the new Dads Club at the information
night this Wednesday, at the JSG morning tea on the 13th of February and we will also be sending
home a nomination form.
Can I attend JSG meetings ?
Of course, everyone is invited to attend these meetings – we have an open door policy and
would love to see more new faces. It’s great to just even come along and offer some feedback
and input to events. The meetings are held once a month and those dates are in the CC Calendar.
Our first meeting for the year is 9.20am Friday the 27 of February in the Boardroom near the
Chapel.

Due to an oversupply and storage constraints, we are unable to take in any further items for second hand sale until the start of Term 2. We appreciate your understanding in this matter.

If you requested your unsold books to be returned to you, they are waiting at the College Shop
for collection. Please call in and collect them as soon as possible.

Clayfield College Community.

CAR PARKING
PARENTS AND STAFF
Parking around Bayview Terrace, Gregory Street and Adelaide Street
Please give due consideration to neighbours and to one another when parking in Circular
Drive and around the streets neighbouring the College.
We raise this issue constantly as it is a significant safety issue and one of great concern.
Residents are unable to see clearly to reverse in or out of their driveways, due to vehicles
parking in “no standing zones”, on yellow lines close to corners, or just over someone’s
driveway. By parking in these illegal spots, our crossing supervisors, parents and residents
experience extremely poor visibility.
AS PARENTS, GUARDIANS AND STAFF AT THIS COLLEGE, WE HAVE A LEGAL AND
SOCIAL OBLIGATION TO PARK SAFELY AND LEGALLY WHEN COLLECTING CHILDREN.
We appreciate you taking note of this very important issue.
