Throughout American history, people have lived in all sorts of places, from military barracks and two-story colonials to college dormitories and row houses. Drawn from the ﬂagship installation at the National Building Museum in Washington, DC, House and Home tours audiences through the past and present of houses both familiar and surprising. It explores the varied history and cultural meanings of the American home, from the Colonial period to today, through ﬁlm clips, construction materials, domestic artifacts, photographs, and “please touch” elements. A companion exhibit features a selection of artifacts highlighting Henry Mercer’s investigations into “old houses”—particularly log structures and stone farmhouses. House and Home has been made possible through NEH on the Road, a special initiative of the National Endowment for the Humanities. It has been adapted and is being toured by MidAmerica Arts Alliance. House & Home was organized by the National Building Museum, Washington, D.C., and curated by Sarah Leavitt. Additional support was provided by the Home Depot Foundation. Contact: 215-345-0210, mercermuseum.org February 8 • 2pm African-American History Month Program: Searching for the Life of Harriet Hemings At the Mercer Museum, 84 South Pine Street Doylestown, PA. Believed to be one of the offspring of the secret relationship between Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings, Harriet was born into slavery in 1801 at Monticello. Sometime in 1822 Harriet, with $50 tucked away in her clothing, boarded a stagecoach to Philadelphia and all but disappeared. Her identity as a fugitive slave was never discovered in her lifetime. This presentation, by Villanova University scholar Catherine Kerrison, follows Harriet’s childhood, weighs her apparent choices, and documents the detective work necessary to locate a woman determined to disappear from the historical record. Program features images that help to imagine her life at Monticello, and later in Philadelphia and Washington. Along the way it explores the larger stories of gender, race and citizenship in America – yesterday and today. Catherine Kerrison holds a Ph.D. from The College of William and Mary and teaches courses in Colonial and Revolutionary America, American Women’s History, Race and Gender at Monticello, and Historical Methodology at Villanova University. She has served as the Academic Director for Gender and Women’s Studies and has participated in fellowship programs from Mellon, Gilder-Lehrman Research, Villanova, and International Center for Jefferson Studies.
