Turn Your Palms Into Ashes — We are planning to make
some of our own Ashes to use on Ash Wednesday this year by
burning last year’s Palms. If you still have your palm from last
Palm Sunday, bring it to Church next weeks and leave it in the
“palm box” in the Foyer near the main doors. On Monday, February 9 at 7pm, we will gather outside the Church entrance to
burn our old palms and make ashes to use this year. It will only
take a few minutes, so if you wan to join us, don’t be late! Got

Dear Parishioners,
Congratulations to married couples who are celebrating special anniversaries this weekend at St Alphonsus.
We honor them for modeling the ongoing celebration of
the Sacrament of Marriage. Thank you to all of them for
their being part of our church community.
The Season of Lent is upon us soon. Prior to it we will
have our Annual Catholic Appeal video next weekend at all
Masses. As I have said in the past, the Annual Appeal is our
diocesan way to make sure that as many services as possible are offered around the diocese. The more of us that
participate the better. All of us sharing the responsibility of
participation makes it so much easier to reach the goal
that our Diocese has given us.
You will see the schedule for Ash Wednesday and the Fridays of Lent in another part of this bulletin, please note it.
We will also be posting the schedule for celebration of the
Sacrament of Reconciliation during Lent. It has many opportunities in there and we can even add more if we need
them. Please consider celebrating early in the season. We
had wonderful celebrations of this Sacrament last weekend
with our younger members and their families. God's mercy
and forgiveness was certainly so evident among us.
During Lent in Hopewell under the leadership of the
Council of Churches we will have a service each Wednesday evening. Details of the times and places are in another
part of the bulletin. Please note them and try to put a couple of them on your schedule. Similarly try to put the Station Mass schedule on your calendar and we will have one
of them at both Hopewell and Pennington during Lent.
There will be many chances for all of us to join together in
prayer and worship during Lent so that our spirit of faith
can be nourished. Even when we may not think that some-

that many have signed up for the season already and I am
sure that even a few more could easily be fitted in. We are
in a mode of including as many as want to participate so
please see if there is a group still open at a time that you
can participate. Call the Religious Education Office in your
parish for assistance in participating.

gifts and countless prayers during my hospitalization and ongoing

much as I wish I could. Your pastor has allowed me to offer my
heartfelt thanks in your parish bulletin. I am most grateful to you
for your loving concern. The future looks good and I hope to be

After the Liturgy of the Eucharist, there is still one
more ritual that we need to do – the Dismissal Rite
or Sending Forth. This part of Mass is more than a
simple Farewell. During the rest of Mass, we have
worked to unite ourselves with Christ in the
Paschal Mystery. Now we prepare ourselves to go
out into the world to share the Good News we
have heard and to be Christ for one another.
In his apostolic letter Dies Domini: Guide to Keeping
Sunday Holy, Pope John Paul II said, “for the faithful who have
understood the meaning of what they have done, the Eucharistic celebration does not stop at the church door” (45). Our
real work begins when we are sent forth to the world.
To appreciate this part of the Mass, reflect on and discuss a favorite movie or an experience that was life-changing.
So too, the Mass should change our outlook and actions. Do
we leave glad that it’s over, or do we leave to pattern our
everyday lives after the Eucharist?
… The assembly should understand that while they
may perform some service within the church, such as singing in
the choir or serving as a communion minister, the primary call
of the laity is to be the church in the world. According to the
Dogmatic Constitution on the Church, we seek God’s kingdom in
our professions and families. The Eucharist draws us into right
relationships and sends us forth to establish them through justice and to “work for the sanctification of the world from
within, in the manner of leaven” (31).

The new translation of the Roman Missal gives the Deacon or
Priest a few different ways to express this sending forth. For
example: “Go and announce the Gospel of the Lord.” or “Go
in peace, glorifying the Lord by your life.” What would it mean
to us if we take their words seriously?

This week’s WORD
HEALING
In today’s Gospel Mark emphasizes Jesus’ healing ministry. Here
are a few important things Mark wants us to absorb. First, we
need to recognize Jesus’ healing touch. He grasps Simon’s
mother-in-law’s hand, helping her up. We know that Jesus only
needed to will this woman well and she would be cured, but he
takes the time to touch her. Jesus then heals many more who
come to him. Second, notice that Jesus always takes the time to
heal by meeting with, talking to and touching the person in need
of healing.
For us, what a comfort it is to know that all we need to do is approach God with a sincere heart and he will meet with us to answer our greatest needs! This week, we invite you to “reach out
and touch someone” who is in need of healing. You can show the
love and power of Christ through your words and actions.

MAGNIFIKID – a great way for your children to follow along

RCIA – What it’s NOT
The catecumenate process is so often referred to as the “RCIA”
that our understanding of what it is has become blurred. We
don’t remember what the initials mean, and it is too easy to project on them whatever we want them to mean.
So here is a quick list of what the RCIA is not:
It is not an adult confirmation program
It is not an adult education program
It is not CCD for adult Catholics
It is not a support group
It is not a class, a club, or a program
So, what exactly is RCIA? The RCIA, or Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, is a conversion process designed for adults who consciously and freely
seek to enter the way of faith and conversion. At the end of the process the person is
not an “expert” Catholic, rather, the individual is able to clearly identify her/himself as a
Disciple of Jesus Christ. So, the “end” of the
process is really the “beginning” of the rest
of their lives as followers and believers in
Christ.

Once again, the Superbowl has come and gone and for most of
us, it’ was a time to root for a favorite team or to spend time
with friends as we watched to see which
commercial was best. It was a day that was
fun for most of us and we woke up Monday
morning not much the worse for wear. But
that’s not true for everyone. Gambling losses
can be devastating and often lead to other serious issues.
Unfortunately, there’s also a lot of violence that takes place on
Super Bowl Sunday. Sometimes it’s a result of too much drinking,
or it may be because of a gambling problem. Whatever the cause,
it’s usually the women and the children in the house who are on
the receiving end of the violence.

911. No one should have to be afraid – ever.

Divorce Support Group — February 14th,Valentine’s Day can
be a very emotional day for those who have had their marriages
end from divorce. All around are images of couples and their love
for each other. When your spouse is no longer in your life those
images can be very painful. Come to our next meeting which
will focus on the love for ourselves. It is important that we know
how to love ourselves so that we can heal from the pain of a divorce.
No matter where you are in the journey, we can offer help and
resources to assist anyone going through this process. Our leaders have had training and experience in facilitating a support
group that deals with the pain and emotions of going through a
separation and divorce.
Make the time to attend our next meeting which will be on Monday, February 9th. Meetings are held on the 2nd Monday from 79pm in the Resource Room. The topics covered are very
informative, and always generate much discussion. Some come
just to listen. Newcomers are always welcome. If you or anyone
you know is interested in learning more about the group, please

The St. James Miryam Ministry has begun meeting in the
Family Center library from 10 to 11:30 on every Thursday. We
are focusing on prayer, starting each meeting with Centering
Prayer. After that we are using the book, Just Because by Melannie Svobda, SND. Each Chapter starts with an original poem that
invites us to pray our experiences.
It's not too late to join us, anytime. All are welcome.

St. James CYO High School Basketball Update
St. James (3-2) is tied for fourth in the CYO standings after getting past St. Ann’s 40-29 last Saturday afternoon at the CYO in
Trenton. The team hopes to
staff in the hunt for a playoff
berth when they face St. Paul’s this Sunday February 8th for a
4pm tipoff at the CYO in Trenton, 920 South at 5pm Saturday
January 31st.
Upcoming Games- the final two regular season games are at St.
Raphael’s in Hamilton tipping off at 3:45pm on Sundays February
15th and 22nd.
Playoffs are scheduled for the weekend of February 28th at the
CYO in Trenton and the 2nd Annual St. James CYO Fundraiser
Classic is slated for Friday March 6th.

within us.”
Guided by facilitators, the Thursday weekly sessions are conducted in a small group format with time allotted both for group

Is God Calling You? — Vocational discernment groups meet to
assist young men who are discerning the possibility that God may
be calling them to a life of priestly ministry. These groups are designed to explore a priestly vocation with other like-minded men
through prayer and sharing vocation stories and experiences.
The group meetings are not meant to convince anyone that the
priesthood is their vocation. They are designed to assist you in
discovering if the priesthood is your true vocation and build your
relationship with Christ along the way.
