THE WOODLANDS HIGH SCHOOL ART TRUST: Tonight is the night! Your student’s 2015
selections will be unveiled! Have you ever noticed the 15 works of art by established Texas artists that are
permanently displayed in the hallways at school? This is The Woodlands High School Art Collection and
the works have been selected and purchased by our students. Each year we add new works to the
collection and our next selection will be unveiled tonight. Our Fifth annual Palettes & Paintings unveiling
and fundraiser is TONIGHT at The Woodlands High School from 7:00-9:30pm. Come see the unveiling
of the newest artworks that will be added to this growing collection and last year's choices that are now
installed in our gallery. Bid on the 100 wooden artist's palettes that have been transformed into works of
art by students, alumni, teachers and area artists. Enjoy entertainment by our nationally recognized
TWHS musicians. This event is FREE and open to all. Palettes, a silent auction, includes 100 artists
palettes crafted into original works of art by accomplished students, faculty, alumni and local artists
offered for sale to the general public. The auction will be held from 7:00-8:30 pm. All proceeds will be
used to grow and conserve the permanent collection of professional art work on display daily at The
Woodlands High School. Paintings will be the unveiling at 8:30 pm of the top five paintings by
professional Texas artists voted on by the entire TWHS student body. In November, a student selection
committee chose 15 of the works submitted by established Texas artists. This week, each student at
TWHS cast their vote for their favorite of these 15 works. Funds from the 2014 Homecoming Dance will
be used to make purchases from the top five and add these artworks to our permanent collection at the
school. Many of the 15 selected artists will be in attendance at Palettes & Paintings. Come visit with these
talented artists and view their inspiring art work. This year's artists are: Victoria Castillo, Gloria Ceren,
Terry Crump, Jenny Durkin, John Guiney, Alan Heilman, Iwona Jankowski, Carol Lyon, James "JB"
Manning, Roberta Masciarelli, Robert McShan, Bernard Mendoza, Tamara Robertson, Todd Stevens and

HIGHLIGHTED HIGHLANDERS: Several times a year The Woodlands High School and the PTO
honor students for outstanding citizenship, achievement, or service. Students are nominated by faculty
and staff based on Good Citizenship, High or Unique Achievements, Improved Performance, A Random
Act of Kindness, Leadership, Excellent Attitude, etc. The honored students were invited to attend a
reception in their honor hosted by Mr. Colschen at the Senior Campus and Dr. Povich at the Ninth Grade
Campus and additional faculty and staff. The “Highlighted Highlanders” received a certificate and a

COLLEGE AND CAREER NEWS
Seniors: Distinguished Achievement Program applications are due no later than May 1, 2015. For
consideration for Distinguished Grad, download and complete the application in Family Connection
(located in both Scholarship list and Document Library).
Montgomery PanHellenic Council will hold its annual informational meeting for graduating young
ladies who are interested in sorority life in college on Wednesday, February 11th at 6:30pm in the Nancy
Bock Auditorium at McCullough Junior High. For more information, contact them at

FAFSA filing assistance is available in February. TWHS will offer assistance to parents and seniors on
Thursday, February 19th in the College and Career Center from 10am to 1pm. No appointment is

Juniors and Sophomores: Houston's largest college fair will be held Thursday, February 12th from 68pm at the NRG Center (formerly the Reliant Center). More than 200 universities from around the
country will be here on this evening to meet prospective students and parents. For details go to

Houston Hispanic Forum Career and Education Day will be held on Saturday, February 14th from
9am-3pm at the George R Brown Convention Center in Houston. Information about college, careers, and

TWHS College Fair and College Panel will be held on Tuesday, February 17th from 11am-1pm in the
cafeteria during all lunches. Juniors can also sign up on Family Connection to participate in one of the

PARENT INFORMATION NIGHTS: Pre-registration Parent Information Nights and Elective &
Academic Fairs for rising 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students will be held on Tuesday, February 10, 2015.
The Elective and Academic Fair will begin at 6:30pm in the Cafeteria on the Senior Campus. Teachers
will be on hand to discuss their curriculums and programs and provide more information on their courses.
The counselors will present registration information to parents in the Auditorium beginning at 7:30pm.
BLITZ DAY: Wednesday, February 11, 2015 has been designated as Blitz Day. The day is designated
as a Red day, but students will attend all eight classes. The schedule is listed below. Students will take 2
registration forms around to each class period. Teachers will discuss the courses and levels available in
their subject or department for the upcoming school year. Core teachers will sign on the registration sheet
their advisement of the appropriate placement for each student based upon his/her demonstrated work
ethic, attendance, and academic performance this school year. At the end of the day on February 11th, one
course sheet will stay at the school and one will come home. These advisements will assist parents and
students in a candid, careful discussion of the realistic selection of courses for the 2015-2016 school year.
The teachers' advisement is an excellent foundation for candid discussions regarding course selections for
next year. Parent and student have the final choice in which level of course the student takes for the next
school year. Please carefully consider there are only 24 hours in the day and total course load as well as
extracurricular activities, community service, job, home responsibilities and time to rest and dream are
vital in your teen's development.
All freshmen will report to the Ninth Grade Campus and start their school day in Advisory.

GULLO DEALERSHIPS CAR GIVEAWAY: To celebrate their 45th anniversary, the Gullo
Dealerships are giving away a car to each high school in Montgomery County. Any student at The
Woodlands High School is eligible to win. For each week a student has perfect attendance their name
will be entered into the drawing to take place the week of May 25th. In addition, the winner must have
perfect attendance for at least 85 days between January 6 and May 22, 2015. The value of the car is
$20,000 and the winner is responsible for the tax, title and fees associated with the vehicle.
SHATTERED LIVES - Shattered Lives of Montgomery County is happy to announce our program will
be at The Woodlands High School on April 7-8, 2015. We invite all Junior and Senior students and at
least one parent interested in participating in the program to our first meeting on Monday, March 9th at
7:00pm in the auditorium. If you plan to attend the meeting you MUST have at least one of your legal
guardians present with you the night of the meeting. There will be a second meeting on Monday, March
30th at 7:00pm. This meeting will include all confirmed participants that have attended the first meeting
with one or more guardians and have been selected for the program. At this meeting you will need to have
at least one guardian as well. It does not need to be the same guardian though it MUST still be a legal
guardian. We look forward to seeing you at the first meeting and we will answer any other questions at
that time.
BLOOD DRIVE: Our annual MD Anderson Blood Drive is February 5, from 7:00 to 4:00. Students
must be 17 years old and weigh at least 110 pounds to donate. Parents are welcome to donate. No
appointment necessary. Please talk to your student about donating. All of the blood donated stays at MD
Anderson and goes to cancer patients. One donation helps three patients.
PROJECT PURPLE: This week, Chris Herren, founder of The Herren Project, visited our school
speaking about his story of recovery and his continual message regarding the dangers of substance abuse.
The Herren Project’s programs and initiatives are a direct response to the increasing number of young
people across the United States that are experimenting, using and suffering from addiction to drugs and
alcohol; or are at risk for such abuse. Together we can make a difference, celebrating life and supporting
one another.
Project Purple is an alternative peer group club that strives to bring awareness to the dangers of substance
abuse. The club meets the 2nd & 4th Wednesday of each month in Room 121.
Project Purple will be sponsoring a talent show on February 20th at the Senior Campus Auditorium.
Tickets will be on sale for $5.00. Show starts at 7pm that night. Signups are available during all lunch
periods for individuals or groups that want to perform. See Mrs. Bethell at the Senior campus and Mr.
Crowe at the Ninth Grade campus for details.
GOLF: The TWH Lady Highlanders showed some early-season dominance in winning the Vern Edwards
Memorial Tournament on Monday-Tuesday, January 19-20, at The Woodlands Resorts Oaks and Panther
Trail courses. Leading the Lady Highlanders was tournament champion Greta Bruner who shot rounds of
67-73 (140). Others contributing to the victory were Brooke McDougald’s 151 (72-79), Orianna Jerez’s
156 (76-80), Gracie Aday’s 158 (77-81), and Carley Charbonneau’s 158 (79-79). The gold-medal total
was 603 (292-311).
The TWHS C Team finished in 5th place with a total of 672 (328-344). Leading the C Team was Hana
Bowman’s 157 (74-83), followed by Kenlie Barrett’s 162 (79-83), Veronica Grey’s 172 (83-89),
Samantha Salcedo’s 181 (92-89), and Kim Clark’s 187 (96-91).
The Lady Highlander B Team finished in 8th place with a total of 683 (338-345). Cassie Lidisky’s 170
(84-86) and Jayne Clark’s 170 (89-81) were followed by Stephanie Lamb’s 174 (81-93), Ana Contreras’s
174 (84-90), and Hannah Bruner’s 179 (91-88).
Competing as medalists were Daira Moreno’s 173 (85-88), Erika Grey’s 202 (97-105), and Marli
Blasingame’s first-day total of 95.
The Highlanders boys team came from second place on the first day to capture the Vern Edwards
Memorial Tournament championship on Monday-Tuesday, January 19-20, by a convincing 23 strokes.
Leading the way for the TWH A Team was tournament champion Sean Foley’s 152 (79-73). Silver
medalist Adrian Castagnola also contributed with 155 total (78-77), followed by Steven Schmulson’s 158
(82-75), Brady Price’s 159 (82-77), and Jake Snortland’s 168 (93-75). Their winning total was 622 (322300).
The Highlander B Team finished in 8th place with a total of 670 (332-334). Leading the way was
Ricardo Lopez’s 165 (79-86) and Carlos Gorbena’s 165 (86-79). Also contributing were Kyle Zuspan’s
169 (83-86), Cameron Keramati’s 171 (84-87). Josh Drachman shot an 86 on the first day.
The TWH D Team finished in 15th place with a total of 681 (358-323). JP Lavalle set the pace with a
total of 159 (80-79), followed by Jacob Bradley’s 170 (91-79), Jace Jensen’s 176 (98-78), Daniel
Ramirez’s 179 (90-89), and Jorge Abud’s 184 (97-87).
The Highlander C Team came in 18th place with a total of 699 (357-342). Arturo Anzaldua posted the
best score of the group with a 169 (87-82). Others contributing were Will Arend’s 175 (90-85), Joey
Kerner’s 177 (90-87), Austin Wentz’s 178 (90-88), and Travis McAtee’s 190 (99-91).
JAPANESE NEWS: February 3 is Setsubun Festival (it symbolizes the end of winter) in Japan. The
Japanese Club officers are planning to have a fun activity around this event. We will post the details in
Edmodo, so please check the announcement.
Japanese Club will be having the annual fundraiser selling our famous handmade Valentine's Day cards.
It is white or red with the Japanese character, LOVE, handwritten with brush pen and an ORIGAMI
HEART attached. The cost is $1 per card. Find us in the cafeteria during all lunches from February 9th
through the 13th to buy one. We can deliver your card to your loved one(s) on February 13th. You can
also order by emailing Ms. Reade ([email protected]).
Students in the Japanese program, please notify Ms. Reade if you are interested in going to Japan this
summer (July 1 through 15). Information is available in room 230.
TWHS SWIM & DIVE: Congratulations to the all the swimmers and divers who competed in the varsity
district meet on January 23 and 24. TWHS men finished first with 163, over Kingwood (150.5),
Atascocita (101.5), College Park (50), Oak Ridge (36), and Conroe. Lady Highlanders took third place
with 107 against Kingwood (143), College Park (118), Atascocita (99), Oak Ridge (48), and Conroe.

Coach K’s Hammer Down Award went to Kaylie Killian and Daniel LaVerne for varsity districts. TWHS
Swim & Dive hosts regionals at the Nat on February 6 and 7. Prelims begin at 10:00 a.m. on Friday,
February 6, and finals begin at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 7. Drop the Hammer Highlanders!
CHEERLEADING: Are you interested in becoming a cheerleader or mascot for the 2015-2016 school
year? A mandatory candidate and parent meeting will take place on February 2 at 6:30 in the auditorium
at TWHS main campus. The tryout clinic will be held March 9-11 and tryouts take place on March 12.
HIGHLANDER BASKETBALL: Boys Basketball has now begun the 2nd half of district schedule. We
played Conroe at home last Tuesday and won 58-46. Our record is currently 17-9 (4-3). We now play at
Atascocita tonight at 7:00pm. Next Tuesday we will be playing at home vs. our rival College Park. Our
Sub-Varsity games will be on Monday at 5:30 & 7pm. Students can get tickets for Tuesday night’s game
on Monday at school. Tickets will go on sale for the public on Tuesday from 11:00am to 1:00pm at the
Senior Campus. We expect a huge crowd so get your tickets early. The Varsity game will be at 7:00pm
with the doors opening at 6:15pm. This game will go a long way in deciding who makes the playoffs.

The Highlander JV basketball team continues to show its mettle in the midst of a very competitive district
schedule. By winning Tuesday night over Conroe 59-43 the squad claimed sole possession of second
place and moved to within a game of first. With control of their own destiny and 5 games left to play on
the season the intensity builds with every game. None figure to be more intense than Tuesday night's
game when the Highlanders play host to College Park.
The Sophomore Boys basketball team has continued its success for the season by notching two wins last
week over Summer Creek and Kingwood. Kingwood was a low scoring contest that forced the team to
play a different style of basketball than usual, but they adjusted well and came out on top. On Tuesday
the Sophomores started the 2nd round of district with a great showing against Conroe. They were up 11
at half and ended up winning 56-16. Today they face the #1 Sophomore team in the district in Atascocita.
The 9th Grade Boys Green Basketball team defeated Kingwood last week to capture first place in the
district. The boys are currently 5-1 after the first round of district play and take on Conroe & Atascocita
in the coming week.
The Freshmen Red Boys Basketball have an overall record of 11 - 7and are 6-1 in district. The Red team
beat Oak Ridge 45 - 44. They then traveled to Summer Creek and beat them 56 - 40. Next district ball
game was against Kingwood, they won 26 -13. Last Tuesday, the Red team played Conroe and won 48 36. The Red team will play Atascocita on January 30. Come out and support your highlanders.
LADY HIGHLANDER BASKETBALL: Lady Highlander basketball continues to work hard in the
gym as they push towards the playoffs! Varsity went 1-1 on the week, with an exciting game at
Kingwood. Amber Terry led the way with 14 points, followed by Luisa DeLa Rosa with a double double
of 12 points and 10 rebounds. In the end, the Lady Highlanders fell short 52-48. The varsity responded
with an overwhelming win against Conroe on the road, 51-31. The team was led by Aaliyah Wheatfall
and Meghan Musso with 10 each. The girl’s close out their last three games with Atascocita at home,
College Park on the road and Oak Ridge at home. We would love to see you in the gym!
The Lady Highlander JV team had a tough loss to Kingwood last Friday night, 21-36. Sarah Butterfield
was the leading scorer with 8 points. The girls re-grouped on Tuesday and had an exciting win against
Conroe, 29-25. Olivia Brusuelas was the leading scorer with 10 points, followed by Sarah Butterfield
with 9. The JV team has an overall record of 17-6 with a district record of 6-3.
TENNIS: The JV Tennis team had a banner day in the CISD/Woodlands JV tournament on Tuesday
January 27th. The Highlanders won 13 medals from 15 players. The following won their brackets:
Lauren Nelson/Cassie Robinson-1st in Girls B doubles, Hannah Battle/Grant Davis--1st in B Mixed
doubles, Francisca Guerro--1st B Girls Singles. Reaching the final and taking 2nd place were A Mixed
doubles Victoria Whitworth/Patricio Ballesteros. Bronze medalists were Gwen Anderson-Harty in Girls
A singles and Grant Eason/Derek Johnson in Boys doubles. Consolation winners were Pablo Molina in A
Boy singles and Olivia Cain/Natalia Ferero in Girls A doubles.
The Varsity got washed out at Humble but won a Mixed doubles match from Sydnee Parker/Rico Anaya
and four other Highlander entries were winning before the rains came. JV/Freshman will be at Klein next
weekend some Freshmen will stay here and compete in the CISD Freshman tournament. Next Varsity
Tournament will be the Lucky Frazier Woodlands tournament Feb 13th.
WRITERS AND ARTISTS! There are ten spaces left!! The Fife literary magazine wants you! Do you
write in your spare time? Do you have amazing artwork that other people notice? Here's your chance to
be published! The Fife literary magazine is looking for submissions for its 2014-2015 edition coming out
this spring. Bring your submissions by room 205, drop them off in the library, or email them to
[email protected] by February 13th!
TWHS BASS FISHING TEAM: It's finally tournament time again! This Saturday, anglers will compete
yet again at Kirby's and The Waterway. Tournament times have been switched with McC kicking it off at
7-10 and the TWHS taking over at 10:30-1:30. This will allow anglers a different type of bite to factor in.
We will be expecting the start of another winter front to blow in this weekend so anglers be prepared with
heavier jackets or rain gear. The front will most likely be a positive with the fish trying to get one last
meal out of the beautiful week we just had. The anglers who can set aside the cold are expected to bring
in some massive weights. I predict no less than 14lbs to take first place. This time of year there may not
be many bites, however, the ones you do catch will be true winter pigs. Good luck to all teams competing!

WINTER GUARD: The Junior Varsity and Varsity Winter Guards are off to an excellent start. Both
took First Place in their respective contests at the Texas Color Guard Circuit (TCGC) contests held at
Robert Turner High School on January 24. Congratulations to both groups for their outstanding
execution and achievement on their debut weekend!
The Varsity’s production, “Over Throne” took the audience and judges by storm and was the highest
scoring performance of the day. The JV’s show, “Goodbye”, was executed well, performed with ease, and
well-liked by the audience and judges.

FBLA: Our next meeting is a social at Jerry Built Burgers on Wednesday, February 11 at 4:00 pm. We
have five students competing at the Area V Conference on Saturday, January 31, 2015 at Cy-Creek HS.
HIGHLANDER FASTPITCH SOFTBALL TEAM: Come out and join the 2015 Highlander softball
team on Saturday, January 31st for our annual MEET THE TEAM DAY. We will have hamburgers and
hotdogs from 11:30 until 12:30 and all students, teachers and fans are invited. The softball player/faculty
slow-pitch game will follow at 12:45. Come out and help kick off the 2015 season.
The 2015 senior softball signees will appear live on the Woodlands On Line Show on Wednesday,
February 4th at 6:45 pm at Buffalo Wild Wings. to preview the upcoming season. All Highlanders come
out and support.

ICE HOCKEY: TWHS Ice Hockey team won its 18th consecutive game last weekend against
Pearland/Friendswood High School at the Willowbrook Aerodrome. The undefeated Highlanders have
dominated league play against the 9 other high schools across Houston and lead the ISHL standings.
With only 4 games remaining in league play, the Highlanders are focused on winning the city
championships and bringing home the Justice Cup.
Jack Hebert, Austin Guidot (2 goals) and Grant Cannizzaro found the back of the net against
Pearland/Friendswood to lead the Highlanders to a 4-2 win. Jack Greer, Mitch Sawyer, Preston Palamara
and Isaac Babcock picked up assists for their efforts on the ice. David Hutto earned the win in net for the
Highlanders.
Next weekend, the Highlanders face CyWoods High School at the Aerodrome in Willowbrook on Friday
night at 7:05 and travel to College Station to take on Brazos Valley at the Spirit Ice Arena on Sunday at

LADY HIGHLANDER VOLLEYBALL: Seniors Rachel Reed, Julia Pasch and Courtney Quinn will be
playing in the Greater Houston Volleyball Coaches Association all-star match tomorrow, January 31st at

WRESTLING: The District 9-6A tournament will be held at Summer Creek High School (1400
Weckford, Houston, Texas 77044) on Thursday, February 5, 2015. Wrestling begins at 8:30am. All three
Highlander teams will compete (Varsity, J.V., and Girls). We have completed the roster for the teams and
will send out via email to all Wrestling Parents. If you can come during the day to support the Highlander
Wrestlers, then please do so. Go Highlanders!!!
RODEO ART WINNERS: The Art Department is proud to have another successful year of Western Art.
The annual CISD Western Art Show, a showcasing of 2D & 3D art focusing on western heritage in
Texas, took place on Saturday, January 10th at Oak Ridge High School. Judges from the Houston
Livestock Show & Rodeo School Art Committee arrived in the morning to jury the pieces and later that
afternoon, there was an open house for students, their families and teachers to celebrate and view the
pieces advancing to the HLSR Art Auction. These artworks will be on exhibition at the Reliant Center for
the duration of the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo and will be up for auction. Students advancing to
the auction will be receiving generous scholarships. Each entry receives a blue, red or white ribbon of
excellence, to represent 1st, 2nd & 3rd place, respectively. From the blue ribbon winners, the judges
choose the Best of Show, Gold Medal and Special Merit awards, each of which advances to the auction.
The teal ribbon finalist awards were given to pieces that were in the final round of judging for
advancement to the auction. Since only a select few make it to the auction, we are proud of each of our
students who were selected to be a part of the show. Congratulations to the following students.

TWHS GRADUATION HIGHLANDERS REGISTRATION IS OPEN: Online registration is now
OPEN! Students (or parents) can register for The Main Event 2015 Graduation Highlanders all night
lock-in party. The registration fee is now $35. The fee will increase to $40 on April 1st, $45 on May 1st
and will be $50 at the door. Register now, check it off of your “to do” list for your Senior! To register
online, please visit our website: www.twhsgrad.org and click on the “2015 Registration” tab. If you prefer
to register offline, you may send in a check for $35 payable to TWHS PTO. The check MUST have your
student’s name, ID # (not social security number) and say “Graduation Highlanders Registration” on it.
Please put it in an envelope marked “TWHS PTO” and drop it off at the front desk of the main campus or
mail it to school to the attention of the PTO. Graduation Highlanders is the PTO committee/event for
graduating Seniors on their graduation night. We hold a lock-in party from 11pm-5am to keep our kids
safe and off the streets while they celebrate one last time with their entire class. We will need volunteers

EYE’S WIDE OPEN PROGRAM: The College Park High School PTO is sponsoring the “Eye’s Wide
Open” program on Thursday, February 5, 2015 at 7:00pm in the College Park auditorium. The program
addresses the 21st Century generation of sex, drugs and communicating. The mature subject matter is not
appropriate for young children.
