Christmas Bird Count Editorial Codes and Database Flags Reminder The Christmas Bird Count is always held December 14 through January 5. Two-letter codes are often used by regional editors to better explain or question a given record. Database flags can be set by compilers and regional editors to indicate an unusual species, high count, or low count. This list will aid you in deciphering the keys when reading accounts in the summaries and on the web site. Cannings 1330 Debeck Road, Site 11, Comp 96, RR1, Naramata, BC V0H 1N0; [email protected] Canadian counts reported 281 species on the 108th Christmas Bird Count, down 8 from last year. One species was added to the Canadian CBC list—an Arctic Loon seen at Duncan, BC. The national list now stands at 409. British Columbia led the way as usual with 153 high counts, followed by Ontario with 74 and Nova Scotia with 23. Victoria, BC, had the highest number for a single count with 29, followed by Ladner, BC (19), St. John’s, NL (16), and HalifaxDartmouth, NS (10). Twenty of the high counts are all-time Canadian highs (numbers boldfaced below). Species in italics indicate those totals (66 species) that are highs for North America as well as Canada. A few high counts were flagged as having no details; these are labeled ND in the list below. None involved new high records for Canada. Exotic species are not included on this list. In winter, Canadian Golden-crowned Sparrows are concentrated on Vancouver Island, where the Victoria CBC set a new Canadian high count of 1163. Photo/Ralph Hocken Chilliwack, BC, is usually the Wood Duck capital of Canada at Christmas, and this year was no exception. Photo/Ralph Hocken Edmonton birders tallied a record high 53 Pileated Woodpeckers on the 108th Christmas Bird Count. Photo/Ralph Hocken 122 AMERICAN BIRDS Summary of Highest Counts of Individuals for the United States Brent Ortego 2805 North Navarro, Suite 600B, Victoria, TX 77901; [email protected] Though coastal Texas was noticeably low in bird numbers, and severe weather in the Northeast and Midwest caused a number of Christmas Bird Counts to be rescheduled, the 108th CBC produced the second-highest tally of species for a count season: 665 species plus 37 infraspecific forms and 25 exotics. Seven additional species were only reported during count week. Island Scrub-Jay, essentially a “given” with the new CBC established this season on Santa Cruz Island, was the only new species added to the cumulative CBC list. One species was dropped because of unconvincing details. It continues to intrigue me how fragile it is to produce high tallies at national and individual CBC levels. Twenty-two percent of the highest counts were from 10 or fewer birds. The skills/luck required to find one individual of an unusual-torare species might make a count’s or birder’s season, and we had 56 of those one-bird situations at the national level. All-time highs were reported for 48 species/infraspecific forms. The Darkeyed (Oregon) Junco record stood for 33 years until 4701 were reported this season. Other longtime records broken were 5000 Bonin Petrel (28 years), 18 Olive Warblers (21 years), three Ruff (19 years), 41,895 Fish Crow (18 years), and 164 Burrowing Owls (17 years) The traditional national high leaders—Point Reyes Peninsula and Salton Sea (South), CA; French Frigate Shoals and Honolulu, HI; and Santa Ana, TX—missed the top 13 CBC list this season, in the mix of 46 states and 331 CBCs having at least one national high. Matagorda County-Mad Island Marsh, TX, led the nation again for the seventh year in a row, with highest tallies for 24 species and one infraspecific form. Laysan Island, HI, was second with national highs for 16 species; Waipi’o, HI, had highs for 15 species; Patagonia, AZ, 11 species; Portal, AZ, 10 species and one form; and Santa Barbara, CA, 10 species. Tucson Valley, AZ; Zellwood-Mount Dora, FL; Waimea, HI; Anzalduas-Bentsen, TX; and THE 108TH CHRISTMAS BIRD COUNT Weslaco, TX, each had nine each. Still notable were Coot Bay-Everglades N.P., FL, with eight species and two forms; and Laguna Atascosa N.W.R., TX, with eight species. All other CBCs had seven or fewer high counts. California was number one again, with highest counts for 130 species and eight infraspecific forms. Texas was second with 115 species and three forms. Other high counts include Florida with 83 species and three forms, Hawaii with 74 species and four forms, Arizona with 69 species and two forms, Alaska with 26 species and one form, Washington with 23 species and one form, and Massachusetts with 20 species. All other states had 13 or fewer species. Only counts for resident species, infraspecific forms, and exotics that do not have editorial comments questioning the validity of the results were accepted for this report. High counts for exotics without known established populations will be displayed, but will not be added to results for the CBC or state. If I make a mistake with this review of the 108th CBC, please let me know and I will include corrections next year at the end of the column.
