During the summers of my childhood, you would find me and my buddies at
the local park playing baseball every day, all day long, except Sunday. From time
to time, I or one of my buddies brought a brand new bat to the park. Everyone
wanted to use the new bat, not because it was new but because someone would
have the privilege of breaking it! The bat would break for two simple reasons: (1)
the ball made contact with a “weak” spot in the bat or (2) the ball made contact
with the “wrong” spot of the bat - the handle instead of the barrel. Once the bat
was broken, we did not discard it, oh no, we fixed it! Our bats were too valuable
to throw away! We would take it home, remove the splinters, glue it, secure it
tightly in a vice, drill holes into the broken area, sink wood screws deep into the
break, let it dry for a few days, take it out of the vice, tape it with electrical tape,
and take it back to the park. A broken bat that was repaired properly was a better
bat to use than one that had not been broken. If the batter held the bat firmly in
his hands, the ball would explode off the bat! A broken bat had the potential of
becoming a better bat. The key to its future usefulness and effectiveness was its
proper and patient repair.

At some point in your life, God will break you. He does so to reveal a weakness in your life that has the potential to defeat you or to reveal a wrong path you
have chosen to pursue that ultimately will destroy you. He breaks you not to hurt
or hinder you but to heal and help you. Once broken, the world and sometimes
the church will discard you but God will never, ever discard you because you are
too valuable to Him! He loves you too much to throw you away. Do not resist His
proper and patient repair, just rest in Him until He is finished. He knows if you will
allow Him to properly repair you, you will become

In the text, Jacob wrestled with God. Jacob put up a fierce fight but God prevailed. As a result, the LORD dislocated Jacob’s hip. God broke him! God broke
more than his hip, He broke his habits. Jacob was a self-centered punk who
needed to be broken. God could not use Jacob to fulfill His will until He broke him
in his weak spot – of his sinful desires to be first at all cost, and of his wrong spot
– his sinful deeds against his brother, his parents, his wives, and his father-in-law.
God did not break Jacob to hurt or hinder his use, He broke him to heal and help
him to become more effective. God broke Jacob so He could bless him and that
He did!
