Heartwarming, amazing, inspiring… just a few words people have had to describe the most incredible dance event you will ever attend! Our fifth annual Live to Dance with The Arc Stars is more than an event, it’s an experience! This “experience” pairs ‘The Arc Stars’ with their dance instructors and other local celebrities for a dance celebration modeled after the television show Dancing with the Stars. The event showcases the talents and abilities of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, using all forms of dance from salsa to swing, to hip-hop to jazz, in a totally inclusive format. Think of it like a ‘Special Olympics’ of dance! The Arc Jackson County serves people with intellectual and developmental disabilities such as autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, and epilepsy. We help our community by providing much needed support and services to those who are most vulnerable. All our services focus on providing people with intellectual and developmental disabilities the quality of life they desire. The Arc is proud to host the fifth annual Live to Dance with The Arc Stars on Saturday, March 14th, 2015 at The Cascade Pavilion. The evening will begin with unique entertainment followed by the dance competition. Your support for this event will assist in providing: • • • • • • Unique semi-independent and independent low income housing for men and women with intellectual and developmental disabilities; Indispensable respite care services for families in need of a break from caring for loved ones with special needs of all ages; Engaging social and recreational programs to promote community inclusion; Essential emergency financial assistance for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families to prevent utility shut-off and homelessness; Important instruction and summer activities to keep students engaged in their homes and in their communities; Valuable information and referral services. The Arc’s most significant fundraiser of the year was a success on all fronts. Heart-warming, amazing, inspiring – just as promised – it was more than an event, it was an experience! We kicked-off our fourth annual event with dinner entertainment provided by Emilie Wylde and CH Chou from Dancing with the Rogue Valley Stars, and Randall Theatre founder and artistic director, Robin Downward, performing “Beautiful City” from his then upcoming production of Godspell. Other Randall Theatre Company performers also provided musical entertainment. The evening’s entertainment was hosted by Co-Hosts Don Hurley of KOOL 103 and Christine Pitawanich of KOBI-TV5. The event featured ten dancing acts. Just as in past years, a wide variety of dances were showcased – everything from hip hop to jazz, ballroom to country western, and even a wheelchair ballet. The results from the competition are as follows: • • • • • The Arc Stars Abby Leuthold and Samara Walker danced with their partners, sibling of a brother with a disability Phoebe Olstad, and dance instructor Dawn Howell performing a wheelchair Ballet – Most Inspirational The Arc Star Jessica Ross danced with her partner and dance instructor Herman Kahaloa, Jr. performing an Urban Fusion routine – Most Creative Returning The Arc Star Logan Spiess danced with his partner and dance instructor Darcy Dodge performing the Waltz – Most Elegant The Arc Star Nicole Phillips Jazz dancing with her partner and dance instructor Aimee Wilson – Most Enthusiastic The Arc Star Berke Widlund Hip Hop dancing with her partners, brother and instructor Logan Widlund, and Medford Police Dept. And last – yet not least – past two time participant The Arc Star, Eston Lindsey, joined Christine and Don as CoHost during the dancing competition. When asked how he felt about being a cohost he said, “It was fun because I had a good sense of humor and I wasn’t shy. I like to make people laugh.” And that he did – another testament to fulfilling our vision of the full inclusion of all people in our community! Live to Dance with The Arc Stars 2014
