Sunday, February 1, 2015, I am listening to CBC radio as Richard
Shames, the Chief Medical Officer for Ontario is being interviewed
about the flu shots. To my surprise, he takes an honest, controversial
stance on the fact that they have not found flu shots to be as effective
as they had hoped.
Many years ago they were thinking they would be 80-90%
effective but they are finding that some years they are only 10%
effective, and in the best year, only 50% effective and he feels the
average effectiveness is 20-30%. In Canada we don't have a good
reporting system to gather evidence, but the Center for Disease
Control in the U.S. does collect data and is suggesting getting a flu shot
yearly is actually offering less protection.
Mr. Shames also says that the reports of how many deaths flu
cause each year is not really accurate. Most get the flu for a few days
and recover, but if you are already in poor health with respiratory
troubles and weakened immunity, then the added influenza might be
'the straw that broke the camel's back so to speak' (my words). He
suggests that in December, the height of flu season, that we stay away
from people, thereby avoiding potential contact. Unfortunately he did
not stress that another method of handling the flu is to build up a
person's immunity, or to learn to use alternative medicine instead of
antibiotics and drugs.
Health Canada says it is disappointed in how many get the shots.
When I see clients at our clinic I always ask them if they got their flu
shot and a great percentage of them say no, they won't do that
because they tried it once and felt they were sicker from the shot than
if they had the flu. I have always said that I am not against vaccines
and flu shots, only that we haven't been successful in making them
effective and safe. I have children visit that I see that get the measles
even though they have had the measles shot, and we have been told
the pneumonia shot has been unsuccessful over and over again, and I
hear horror stories from people as to their experiences and their
children's experiences after having a vaccine shot. I myself took the
scarlet fever vaccine as a child and within hours came down with
scarlet fever which almost took my life - I was the only one to get the
shot in the family and I was the only one to get scarlet fever! It is
thought that much of our immune disorders now could stem back to
when they used the rhesus monkey as the incubator for the DPT shot,
only to find the rhesus monkey carries retrovirus.
If you do your research on vaccines you will find we are still in the
initial baby steps of understanding viruses and microbes. The safest
way to avoid dying from the flu, is to keep yourself healthy and robust.
How boring right!

Warm tags for better retention
Calving season has begun for
some prairie ranchers, and the advice
when it comes to ear
tags is this: keep them
warm.
A study by the
Prairie Agricultural
Machinery Institute
shows that radio frequency identification
(RFID) tag retention
rates drop if they are
applied when cold.
Retention
is
lower even if cold
tags are warmed up
before application.
Exposure to freezing
temperatures
reduces
their
strength.
“Keep the tags in
your pocket until right before you
apply them,” said PAMI project lead
Joy Agnew.
She said researchers believe new
tags that are frozen at any time
before application develop small fissures or fractures, making them more
likely to fall out or break once in an
animal’s ear.
RFID tag use is a requirement for
national traceability policies, and the
Canadian Cattle Identification
Agency tests and approves various
brands for readability and retention.
PAMI conducted enhanced tests to
obtain more information for better
retention.
The temperature findings are
not necessarily a surprise to ranchers, although confirmation is useful.
“Everybody knows if you’re tagging in cold weather, you throw
them on the dash of the truck and
turn the heater up and keep them
warm,” said Saskatchewan Cattlemen’s Association chair Mark Elford.
He heads an ongoing CCIA study
on tag retention prompted by
numerous producer complaints
about lost tags and the problems it
creates with the Canadian Food
Inspection Agency.
Among CCIA requirements is
that tags must require no more than
100 pounds of force to correctly
insert in cattle ears.
“When inserted in the warm, all
of the tags met that requirement, but
when inserting in the cold, it was
harder to insert every single one of
them, and the average insertion
force in the cold was over 120 lb.,”
Agnew said.
PAMI also tested the force
required to break a tag and pull it
apart and is examining the effect of
pneumatic tag applicators on retention rates.
Six types of RFID tags were tested using either cattle ears obtained
from slaughter plants or equivalent
material. Sufficient ears were not
available for the thousands of tests
required.
CCIA tests the tensile strength of
tags, meaning the force required to
pull the front button from the back
portion. PAMI tested that as well as
sheer and impact force.
“The tags are weaker in sheer
than they are in tension, but the
forces required to break the tags are
still well above the thresholds set by
the CCIA for both cold and warm
inserted tags,” said Agnew.
Research also showed that force
beyond 70 lb. per sq. inch has an
effect.
“Any force on the tag that could
potentially make the hole (in the ear)
bigger, or anything that can generate
an impact force of more than 70 lb.
can cause trouble,” she said.
“That’s where we’re finding
where most of the
ears are ripping, is
around the 70 or 75
lb. impact force.”
Repeated tugging, which might
occur if cattle are
grazing in bushy
areas or banging
their ear tags against
feed bunks, could
result in larger ear
holes, which increases the chance for
loss.
Some brands of
RFID tags are more
susceptible than others
to
ripping
through
ears
because they stretch to form a thin
wire that slices through cartilage.
PAMI advises producers not to
mix and match tag brands. The front
and back of the tag should be the
same brand, and the applicator
should be suited to that brand.
Agnew said PAMI may have recommendations for tag manufacturers once studies are complete, but
the main goal is to provide producers with useful information.
“We still maintain that if the best
management practices are followed,
then tag retention should be in that
90 to 95 percent retention range,”
Agnew said.
Jim Lynch Staunton, a cow-calf
producer from Lundbreck, Alta., said
he has few problems with tag retention.
“If you put them in the place
where they’re supposed to be put in
the calf’s ear, they stay in, so if people
are having problems, they’re not
applying them properly,” he said.
“The issue I’ve had a lot more
than retention is whether or not they
read.”
RFID tags can be read with a
wand, but Lynch Staunton said older
ones can present problems because
of wear.

Body condition scoring
is a hands-on method of
determining the amount of
fat an animal is carrying. It
uses a numerical rating system based on the feel of a
cow rather than descriptions based simply on a
visual appraisal.
Condition scores are
measured by feeling for fat
cover with your hands. The
scores cannot be measured
visually because a full hair
coat can hide poor condition. You measure the fat
cover over four major locations on the animal's body:
back bone (spine or
topline), short ribs, hip

as slight "rounds" that are

ribs cannot be felt even
with firm pressure, and
folds of fat are beginning to
develop over the ribs and
thighs of the animal.
Score 5: The bone
structure is no longer
noticeable and the animal
has a "blocky" appearance.
The tail head and hip bones
are almost completely
buried in fat and folds of fat
are apparent over the ribs
and thighs. The short ribs
are completely covered by
fat and the animal's mobility is impaired by the large
amounts of fat.
Where To Condition
Score:
Because there is no
muscle between the end of
the short ribs and the skin,
any padding felt by the
thumb will be fat. There are
two main areas to check in
order to determine condition score; the short ribs
and on either side of the
tail head. The tail or pin
bones can also be checked
to determine fat cover.
When To Condition
Score:
Ideally cows should be
condition scored three
times in each production
year as follows:
1.Fall
pregnancy
check/start of winter feeding season = Optimum
score is 3.0
2.At Calving = Optimum score for Mature
Cows is 3.0 & First Calf
Heifers is 2.5

or good quality forage or
pasture will be converted
fairly efficiently into back
fat or body condition.
• The cost of gain at this
point will be significantly
less that it would be at any
other time of year (i.e.) Near
or after calving or during
lactation when the cows
energy requirements are
much higher will require
allot more feed to get the
same results in body condition gain.
What To Remember:
• You don't need to
remember all five condition
scores. The most useful
score to remember and to
shoot for in terms of a goal
is the score of 2.5 to three.
• Check short ribs, tail
head and pin bones for fat
cover.
• 2.5 - 3.0 - You should
be able to feel short ribs
with some pressure, but
you should not be able to
count them individually. Fat
cover should be evident on
either side of tail head
and/or over pin bones.
• If condition has to be
put back onto cows, best
time of year to do it is on
fall after calf has been
weaned.

Tips for staying awake at the wheel
(BPT) - One in five fatal accidents involves a
drowsy driver. Unfortunately, driving while
fatigued is common in today's business world. Yet
the consequences of driving when you're tired
can be tragic.
Drowsiness is similar to alcohol in how it compromises driving ability by reducing alertness and
attentiveness, delaying reaction times, and hindering decision-making skills. Drowsy driving is deadly, but it can be prevented.
Drivers should make it a daily priority to get
sufficient sleep, refuse to drive when sleepdeprived, recognize the signs of drowsiness, and
pull off the road to a safe location when sleepy.
Rolling down the windows or turning up the
music will do little to increase your alertness while
driving.You can drink coffee for a short-term energy boost, but if you catch yourself drifting into
other lanes or nodding off, it's absolutely time to
pull over and take a nap.
Getting seven to nine hours of nightly sleep is
the best way to prevent drowsy driving. Drivers
should also avoid driving late at night or alone,
and they should share the driving with another
passenger on long trips.
How do you know if you're too sleepy to
drive? If you experience any of these warning
signs, you should pull over or have another pas-
senger take the wheel:
• You keep yawning or are unable to keep your
eyes open.
• You catch yourself "nodding off" and have
trouble keeping your head up.
• You can't remember driving the last few
miles.
• You end up too close to cars in front of you.
• You miss road signs or drive past your turn.
• You drift into the other lane of traffic.
• You drift onto the "rumble strip" or onto the
shoulder of the road.
Cities should encourage transportation companies to promote public safety by adhering to
hours-of-service regulations, scheduling work
shifts based on sleep need and circadian timing,
implementing an evidence-based fatigue management system, and screening commercial drivers for sleep diseases such as obstructive sleep
apnea.
There is no substitute for healthy sleep - it's
essential to promote personal safety and optimal
alertness behind the wheel. Evaluate your sleep
habits, address potential problems with a boardcertified sleep specialist, and make sleep a priority
to protect yourself, your passengers and other drivers from avoidable, life-threatening accidents
caused by drowsiness.

rugs. And the process still involves a skilled weaver sitting at a
loom, knotting the rug by hand.
Two types of knots are traditionally used in weaving. The single
Senneh knot is generally found in eastern rug weaving countries,
while the double Ghiordes knot is used in western regions. Either
style allows weavers to create the intricate patterns that give
oriental rugs their beauty and exceptional durability.
It takes just 2 seconds for a skilled weaver to tie each knot. But
even at this pace, it can take days to weave a single rug, as row
after row of knots are tied, pounded into place, and trimmed.
Today, many rugs are made by machine or by hand-tufting.When
made of high-quality materials, they look and feel very much like
hand-knotted rugs. The main benefit is that they are more
affordable.
Over the centuries, each rug weaving area has developed motifs
that are typical of the people of that region.
For example, the Herati, a small round rosette surrounded by
feathery leaves, probably originated in the town of Herat in
northwest Afghanistan. It symbolizes the small fish that come to
swim in the moon's reflection. The paisley design often found in
neckties originated in Persia as the boteh design. Some think the
boteh came to Persia from the ancient Egyptian symbol for
wheat, which symbolized immortality.
Likewise, regions come to be associated with certain color
schemes, like the sky-blue color found in the rugs of Qum which
is said to be inspired by the blue rooftops of the holy city.
Rugs have served many purposes over the centuries, from the
mundane to the religious. But that is part of their magic -- that
this one art form can serve so many purposes. Perhaps that is
why they have cast so strong a spell over people.
