Find out how to reduce your home energy bill
Council is holding a number of energy efficiency workshops across the municipality in
March. The workshops titled, Save Energy, Save money, Improve Comfort will be run by
energy auditors, Harkness Consulting Services, who advised Council on recent energy
efficiency upgrades at three Council-owned buildings. The workshops will outline simple
measures that could help local residents save $200-$300 per year on home energy bills.
Bookings are not required. Tea and coffee will be provided at the end of the workshop. To

Westbury Information Signs – now available for local notices
Two new information signs have now been erected in Westbury. One is
sited at the Town Hall Car Park and the other on the Recreation Ground near the
Community Health Centre. These signs contain local information and a map of attractions
and services. The rear of each sign is now available to promote local community services
and events free of charge. To have your notice displayed, please hand in one or two
copies to Council Reception during business hours. Notices should not exceed A3 size.
Both signs will be updated every Monday. Council reserves the right to determine
appropriate notices and the length of time they are displayed.
Public Art Advisory Group
Are you interested in being part of an advisory group to help Council manage public art in
Meander Valley?
There are many public artworks in Meander Valley. Some are Council’s responsibility such
as the Deloraine Street Sculpture Trail, the Westbury Silhouette Trail and the Meander
Aquaphonium at the Great Western Tiers Visitor Centre.
Council recently created a policy to help manage its public art. This policy supports
establishing a Public Art Advisory Group. The aim of this Group is to help Council promote,
commission, decommission, and maintain its public art. Members may be from the arts,
business, education or community sectors. Artistic skills are not essential. The Group will
meet every three months beginning in early February 2015. All members will be volunteers.

Community Funding Forum

The Deloraine & Districts Community Funding program supports projects in the Meander
Valley. Charitable and Not-for-Profit organisations can apply for funding for projects and
activities that offer clear public benefit, such as community welfare, environment, health,
education and culture.
The Forum will provide organisations with information on the eligibility of potential projects

Australian Government Mobile Service Centres travel to rural and regional communities to
provide community members with information and access to government services. They
provide personalised face-to-face servicing to individuals and families who may not have
easy access to a Department of Human Services office. Staff from the Department of
Human Services travel with the Mobile Service Centres and can help the community with
Centrelink, Medicare, Child Support & Australian Hearing payments and services.

Meandering 2014 exhibition – coming to the Deloraine Creative Studios
Meandering 2014 is an annual art exhibition where local artists present work based on
images of Meander Valley. This year’s exhibition is to be presented at the Deloraine
Creative Studios, Emu Bay Road from 18 February - 31 March 2015. Please take the

We are seeking compassionate people to provide long-term foster care placements for
children and young people. A Life Without Barriers Foster Carer is provided with 24/7

Working it out – exploring sexuality and gender
The Rainbows Group is a support group for anyone over 18 who is same-sex attracted,
bisexual, or questioning their sexuality or gender. This runs fortnightly on Tuesdays from

Building Local Leadership Capacity
FRRR (Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal) is an Australian organisation offering
small, discretionary grants with both a national reach and local focus and is informed by
place-based approaches to community development. FRRR has released the first in a
series of five webinars and YouTube clips now available to help community groups build

This program provides learner drivers with driving experience to obtain a provisional

Fire Service website has latest safety advice and information
A range of printed and digital media around preparing for and surviving
bushfires and domestic fires is available through the Tasmania Fire Service website. You
can download or order free printed publications and DVDs including the Bushfire Survival
Plan Book www.fire.tas.gov.au
Things are happening at Pearn’s Steam World.
Pearn’s Steam World, exists to preserve, operate and display the collection of agricultural
steam engines and related machinery and artefacts collected by the late Jack, Verdun and
Zenith Pearn, It’s a collection dates back to the late 1800’s and contains many items of
State and National significance.
Most recently the not for profit management committee has qualified to be included on
Centrelink’s Local Activities Database. This allows job seekers who receive a Centrelink
payment to have their voluntary work meet activity test requirements. Volunteers are
urgently needed to undertake tasks such as meet and greet of visitors, merchandise sales
and restoration work. A wide range of skills are needed to run and improve the exhibition
and those involved believe there will be something of interest for everyone. If you are

Tasmanian Community Fund
Grant Round 30 is now open. Applications for small grants (up to
$10,000) will close at 5.00pm on 18 March. Applications for medium grants ($10,001 to
$90,000) will close on 8 April. Stage 1 applications for large grants ($100 000 to $300 000)
will close on 4 March. Applicants will be notified of the outcome of their application in midJune 2015.
Applicants are also encouraged to discuss their project with Tasmanian Community Fund
staff (phone 6232 7043 or 6232 7269 or email [email protected]) before submitting
their application. The guidelines and the application forms are available on the Tasmanian
Community Fund website. Grant Round 31 will open on 25 July 2015.
2014-15 Sport and Recreation Tasmania grant program now open.
The Minor Grants Program provides $500 - $10 000 grants to clubs, associations, local
government and other not-for profit providers of sport and active recreation. For further

Local Sporting Champions Program – closes 28 February 2015
This program is an Australian Government initiative to provide financial assistance to
young people aged 12-18 towards travel, accommodation, uniforms or equipment costs

endorsed state, national or international sporting championships - or a School Sport
Australia state or national championships.

Grant funding is available for arts projects commencing after 1 July 2015 through

Holden Home ground Advantage program – closes 28 February 2015
You can apply for money through Home Ground Advantage for projects, or equipment, that
make life easier for the members and supporters of your sporting club. For example, you
might want to make improvements to your clubrooms, install new hot showers, get a new
scoreboard, or purchase new sporting equipment that will help your team perform on the
field. Any sporting club or community organisation which runs and supports sporting
activities within Australia can apply. Holden Home Ground Advantage program
Council Community Grants 2014/15
Applications to the Meander Valley Council‘s Community Grants Program are invited all year
round. Grants up to $3,000 are available to community organisations for projects that
address community needs through special events, sport and recreation and/or community
development. Information and application forms are available from the Westbury Council
Offices and www.meander.tas.gov.au Applications for consideration in the next adjudication
round should be lodged by 31 March 2015.
