Andy’s Slap Shot...
I want
everyone to know that I made up the story about Coach Ritter joining the circus.
The true story is he was picked up on route 95, somewhere south of Jacksonville, Florida and transported to the Omaha school for wayward boys in Omaha, Nebraska. More
details to follow.
At church this week a visiting Franciscan Friar spoke about the meaning of the prayer
to St. Frances. I was moved by his comments and thought that the words in this prayer
really sum up what we do and try to do within the Dare Devil organization. I know our
team is made up of different beliefs and cultures but if you strip away the religious
tone of the prayer or poem, you’ll find very inspirational words. Words that can translate into what it means to be a Dare Devil. Let me share with you a few lines that I
think apply to our family.
Where there is doubt, faith. Every new family that walks into practice the first day
with their little son or daughter has the same doubts and worries about their child
fitting in, being able to skate, or fear of injury. We as an organization, meaning our parents and coaches ensure that the players are trained properly and our veteran parents
act as a support group to ensure that the new parents fears are lessened by the comforting words by a parent that has been around the block.
Where there is sadness, joy. I heard a parent tell another parent on Saturday that the
Dare Devils program was the best therapy that her son was involved in. I remember
when this family registered their son. There was sadness, concern and worry as I
talked the mom through all the registration particulars and prepared her to have her
son participate. Today there is a lot of joy from her son and mom and dad too.
To be understood, as to understand. How many times do we come across people in our
lives that don’t understand our unique family? Sometimes these people are close friends
and family other times they are people we come across in the supermarket or a restaurant. How great is it that we have a club that our players can join where they are understood by their teammates, coaches and the families that are surrounding them? How
great is it that they can be themselves for a few hours each week without being judged?
It’s in giving that we receive. This hit me the hardest. We have a very dedicated group
of parents, coaches and friends of the team that donate their time and talents to help
make our organization great. On Saturday I received our annual donation from the
Greenwich Autism Alliance in the amount of $5,000. If you don’t know who this wonderful organization is, let me tell you. Kelly and Bob Milizzo. Will’s Mom and Dad are the
founders. They make an annual donation to the Dare Devils that enables us to do many
wonderful things. They also make donations to many other important programs that
benefit many individuals. Thank you, Kelly and Bob, you are both wonderful parents and
friends.
I know that I get great satisfaction every time a player comes up to me with a suggestion
or a high five and a hug. It makes all the hard work worth it! I hope that you all are feeling the satisfaction from being a member of the team and helping the team become the
flagship of special needs hockey. It truly is that in giving that we receive!
Don’t forget about our game this weekend in Bucks County. If you haven’t signed up yet,
there is still time. If you’re not going to the game, we’ll have a joint practice from 4:00
pm to 5:00 pm.
Enjoy your week and have a Happy Valentines Day!
Andy
