P.02 ROAD MAPS
2015 marks the 75th anniversary of IGN.
Over the last three quarters of a century, IGN has
witnessed numerous cartographic revolutions,
including the systematic introduction of aerial
photography after the Second World War, replacing
the plane table surveying method; the beginnings
of computer-assisted cartography in the 1970s and
1980s; and the emergence of cartographic and
topographic databases. The first IGN Top 25 map
dates back to 1989.
Today, the new Série Bleue maps draw on the very
latest advances in digital cartography. They represent
the beginnings of a fourth generation of maps in
France, following on from Cassini maps, 1:80,000
survey maps and the 1:50,000 maps launched in
1900 by the army's survey department, which was
replaced by IGN in 1940.
However, our new Série Bleue maps – which have more
than doubled in size – are not the only innovations on
the cards this season. IGN is also launching an online
Leisure Zone in spring 2015 for outdoor activity fans.
And at our Saint-Mandé site, we will be opening
GéoRoom, a space dedicated to the general public
featuring exhibitions of the latest geographic
information technologies, a shop selling map products
published by IGN and our A la carte map service, and
our new documentation centre, the successor of the
National Photo and Map Library. It will also host talks
and be open to group visits, by appointment.
2015: another year of creativity and innovation
from IGN!

Géoportail provides easy access to maps, aerial photographs
and cadastral maps of France. In addition to IGN's own
repositories, it includes a whole range of data produced
by our partner organisations, covering natural spaces,
protected sites, land use zones, tide forecasts, sensitive
urban zones and urban tax-free zones, at-risk zones,
natural and cultural heritage, and more. In total,
over one hundred different types of data are available.
Navigate in 3D
Géoportail also provides 3D maps and aerial photographs,
bringing relief into view in an instant. The majority of
2D data can also be viewed in 3D. 3D viewing mode includes
a variety of functions, such as the option to orient the map,
rotate around a specific point and create an elevation profile.

MAPPING
CONCEPTS
CONTOUR LINES
Reading and understanding
the relief on maps
THE CONCEPT OF SCALE
Choosing a map
means choosing a scale.
Each scale has its corresponding use and purpose.
A contour is an imaginary line that links all the points located at
the same height above sea-level.
• For travel by car,
national maps at 1:1,000,000
or regional maps at 1:250,000,
as well as 1:100,000 maps
are the most suitable and give an
overall view of the projected route.
• On IGN maps, relief is represented by orange contour lines.
Regional maps
1 cm = 2.5 km
• For travel by bicycle,
1:100,000 maps are ideal
because they provide information
about both major and secondary
roads, as well as tourist information.
The closer together
they are, the steeper
the gradient.
TOP 100 maps
1 cm = 1 km
• For exploring a region on foot,
1:25,000 maps are best if you want
enough information to hike safely
(contour lines, buildings, footpaths
and tracks, vegetation, refuges, etc.).
The further apart they
are, the gentler the
gradient.
• Height above sea-level is generally shown on the thicker,
so-called master contour lines.
• Contour lines are separated by a difference in height that
we call "equidistance".
Contour lines appear in TOP 25, TOP 25R, Série Bleue and TOP 100 maps.
