West Point Grey Community Association
President’s Message
I can’t believe Winter is here and the holidays are just around the corner! We have had such a
successful Fall season. There was a great turnout for our free week of programming in September
to celebrate our 40th anniversary of West Point Grey as a Community Centre. It was great seeing
new faces and families in the Centre!
This Winter, we have a lot of new programs for families including Dance Extreme for Girls, Yoga
for Kids, Little Ballerinas and even a Family Dance Battle! Also remember to sign up for our Spring
Break Day Camps for Preschoolers and Children aged 3 to 12 years old. Not to leave the parents
out, we also have some new adult programs including Burlesque, Dance Boot Camp, Postnatal
workouts, Drawing classes and the annual Sun Run clinic.
As always, we have plenty of Special Events scheduled including our classic Breakfast with Bunny, Family Day and
Wine and Paint nights for the adults. These provide opportunities to meet your neighbors, make new friends or simply
mix up your family time. Remember to get your tickets early because we usually sell out!
In September, we said goodbye to our amazing Recreation Supervisor, Margaret Watts, as she retired. Margaret gave
110% to the job and was instrumental in making countless positive changes at the West Point Grey Community Centre
including increased accessibility, signage, diversity, special events, the arts and culture and upgrades to our facilities.
Most importantly though, Margaret was an absolutely treasure to work with and we will miss her dearly.
I would also like to give a warm welcome to Nicolle Koeppel who is joining our team as the new youth leader. Nicole
will be responsible for overseeing the Youth Council, the Friday night program, youth volunteers and developing
connections with the local schools.
Thank you to the Board members, staff and volunteers for the amazing Fall season. A special thank you to all the
resilient staff who went above and beyond to provide day camps for the kids (and parents!) during the strike.
Cheers,
Christine Nelson - President, WPGCA

Agenda
6:30-7:30pm: President’s, Committee’s & Staff Reports, Park Board
Reports and Election of Directors.
7:30-8:30pm: Guest Presentation: Robert A. Howald, Executive
Vice President, Real Estate, Canada Lands Company.
Mr. Howald, will introduce the Canada Lands
Company and the community consultation process.
Guest Presentation
Robert A. Howald,
Executive Vice
President,
Real Estate, Canada
Lands Company.
“Canada Lands Company is very
pleased to be able to work in the
City of Vancouver, in the community
of West Point Grey on its Jericho
Lands. This property represents an
exciting opportunity to integrate this
important site into the community
in way that wasn’t possible before.
This is long-term endeavour that will
span many years. The foundation
of Canada Lands’ work is its
consultation process. The company
actively seeks out outreach initiatives
in communities in which it works in
order to understand local aspirations
and municipal requirements. This
consultation process informs any
future development plans. There is
no question that the community plays
a key role in shaping Canada Lands’
plans. I will discuss this process and
answer questions”.

The Iyengar method works on the principle of meditation
in action. Practitioners concentrate closely on the
movements in the yoga postures (asanas), bringing the
body into balance by increasing mobility, stability, strength
and alignment. Poses range from the stimulating and
active to the restful and restorative. The hallmark of the
Iyengar approach is the ability to adapt the poses to the
needs and challenges of the individual student, making
it appropriate for all ages and levels of fitness or health.

If you are practicing any other kind of yoga, you are
practicing Yang Yoga - and that is only half the equation.
Yin Yoga targets the deeper tissues of the body. There
are perhaps only 5-7 poses in a Yin class - that are held
for longer periods of time (2-5 min). Breathing into
the ligaments, tendons, and less elastic tissues takes
an actively relaxed focus that works to help you open,
lengthen, breathe into those tissues that may have some
issues. There is no pain; mild discomfort is OK - but NO
pain. This is time for you to experience and really feel from

If you are practicing any other kind of yoga, you are practicing
Yang Yoga - and that is only half the equation. Yin Yoga targets
the deeper tissues of the body. There are perhaps only 5-7
poses in a Yin class - that are held for longer periods of time
(2-5 min). Breathing into the ligaments, tendons, and less
elastic tissues takes an actively relaxed focus that works to
help you open, lengthen, breathe into those tissues that may
have some issues. This is time for you to experience and
really feel from the inside out. Drop in $15 if space permits.

Recreation programs for children under 6 years of age are
governed by the Province of BC’s Child Care Licensing
Regulations. You may have noticed that we have made
some changes to our classes in order to comply with these
regulations. These changes are:
1.Classes are all skill based e.g. Soccer, Cooking,
Language Programs, etc
2. Classes are no more than 1 hr. and 15 minutes in length
3. Some of our Programs are now licensed e.g. the

We are excited to be able to offer a rich compliment of
