***
Thought it was about time that we make time for
important people in our lives. Meet the people who
are involved in our field of interest, who are always
around, but don’t necessarily breed or show. The
all important people behind the scenes!
***
To most of us, she is the gorgeous lady behind the
camera, we see at shows. She is always friendly,
sweet, patient and helpful, but so quiet ...
So who is Jenni Ferreira? She graciously agreed to
an informal interview and it was such a privilege to
get to know her a little better.
(exclusive interview)
meet Jenni Ferreira
what is your full name?
Jennifer Ferreira.
where did you grow up?
I was born in Cape Town and spent the first few years of my
life in Sea Point. My father was transferred to Johannesburg
when I was 6.
did you further your studies?
I studied at Wits Technikon for 3-years.
what is your profession?
I was a PA for many years. I resigned and stopped working in
November 2006, to join my husband in Switzerland.
There I was a cat sitter and was the Editor of the ZIWA News
(Zurich International Womens Club Magazine).
When I got back to South Africa in 2012, I battled to find a
job. I started Kittycat online Magazine in Jan 2014 and I run
the Kittycat website. Please join me on Facebook: Kittycat
Online Cat Community and Kittycat Magazine.
I also do cat sitting in my area, some feline photography and
have recently started importing Spirit Essences Holistic Remedies for Animals (A Jackson Galaxy product).
do you follow an exercise program?
I walk at 6.30 in the mornings with my neighbour.
what is your favorite TV program?
I have a few but really enjoy Shameless and Ray Donovan.
4

(continued)
what is your favorite movie?
Dirty Dancing.
what is your favorite book?
Don’t get much time to read anymore. A book that springs
to mind was called: The Dog Who Rescues Cats. The True
Story of Ginny by Philip Gonzalez and Leonore Fleisher.
how did you get involved with pet
photography?
I always admired and loved Ronnie Magic's photography.
My Bali's were quite nervous at shows and when I took
them for pics their eyes were always so round and I could
almost never choose only 5 pics, wanted them all. So
dreamt of being able to do my own cat pics.
For my 40th birthday hubby got me studio lights. Selftaught, I started taking photos of my own cats and the cats
I used to look after in Switzerland etc. and then started
helping out at some shows.
I also always do a surprise shoot for my kitty clients when
I'm cat sitting.
do you cater for private photo sessions?
I've done some private shoots yes, cats and dogs, but I really love cat photography.
Have done pics for breeders; I offer a special rate for them.
do you have a role model?
Not really. Had an aunty who would always say life
is short, live it to the fullest.
Your words to live by?
Always see the positive.

(continued)
what do you love most?
In the whole wide world ? Cats of course, and my cellphone!
what do you hate?
Crime and feeling scared.
what is your best personality trait?
My friends always say I'm their sweet gentle friend. Loyalty I
guess.
what is your worst personality trait?
Lack of confidence and doubt. I don’t easily trust.
what does your ideal weekend entail?
Now that I'm older, I really enjoy being at home with my cats.
what is your favourite place in the
world?
I'd have to say Switzerland and Cape Town would be a very
close second!
best advice you ever got?
Be the best that you can be, don't worry about what other
people think.
do you have pets of your own?
I have 9 beautiful Balinese cats.
what inspires you?
Feel good stories.
what is your passion?
Without sounding like a completely crazy cat lady ..... CATS!
where do you see yourself in 5-years?
Don’t think that far ahead.

special treat
Nothing says "Be my Valentine" better than cooking sardines
for the sake of your cat. Your cat will love the scent emanating from your kitchen, and the good news is that it doesn't
last too long - and neither will these treats, if your cat has
anything to say about it!
Ingredients

1 small can of sardines with oil

1/3 cup dry milk powder

1/2 to 3/4 cup ground wheat germ

1/2 teaspoon ground brewer's yeast

non-stick spray
Directions
1. In a medium-sized bowl, put the sardines and all the oil.
Mash the sardines with a fork until very fine.
2. Add in the milk powder and 1/2 cup of wheat germ. Mix
well and then add in the brewer's yeast.
3. If the sardine mixture is too moist, add in the remaining
wheat germ. Spray a baking tray with non-stick spray.
4. Make small balls out of the mixture and put on the baking
dish. With a fork dipped in the wheat germ, press the balls
down to small disc.
5. Then for a special Valentine's touch, shape the discs into
little hearts with your fingers.
6. Bake in a preheated oven (180 degrees) until the cookies
are browned.
7. Store in an airtight container when cool.

vitamins and supplements
- the inside scoop Nowadays, Veterinary outsets and pet stores have a
large variety of vitamins and dietary supplements for
pets available.
Ever wondered if you should be adding any of these
products to your cat’s diet?
First and foremost, your cat should be eating a balanced and nutritional diet. If you are feeding a premium cat food and your cat is in good health, then
you probably don’t need to add any supplements to
his/her diet.
However, if your cat suffers from a health condition
for which supplements might be beneficial it warrants
further investigation.
A recent FDA sponsored study revealed that the pet
supplement industry is not currently strongly regulated. The committee stressed that clear and precise
regulations need to be established to ensure that only
safe animal dietary supplements are made available.
They further added that “the current regulations addressing animal dietary supplements are in disarray”.
E.g. For example, garlic can cause hemolytic anemia in cats,
but there are numerous garlic dietary supplements for cats on
the market. Small amounts might not kill your cat, but the
health benefits are questionable and your money is better
spent on premium cat food.
*** Therefore, as a rule of thumb is to always consult
such additions to your cat’s diet with your Veterinarian.
Here are some common dietary supplements for cats:
essential fatty acids
Veterinarians often prescribe fish oil supplements containing
essential fatty acids (EFAs) for dogs and cats with allergic dermatitis, dry skin and dull hair (after ruling out underlying conditions). Recent research shows that omega-3 fatty acids are
beneficial to numerous health conditions in pets, including
cardiovascular disease, food allergies, dermatitis, kidney disease, arthritis and autoimmune disorders.
digestive enzymes
If your cat suffers from chronic gastrointestinal upset or
weight loss, she might find some benefit from one or both
types of digestive supplements: probiotics and digestive enzymes.
probiotics
Probiotics are dietary supplements that contain live micro8
CFSA Informer
vitamins and supplements
(continued)
oganisms that beneficially affect the host by improving its intestinal microbial balance. For example, probiotic supplements are recommended for the dietary management of cats
with diarrhea.
digestive enzymes
Veterinarians are increasingly recommending digestive enzyme supplements for bowel disease, digestive irregularities,
chronic diarrhea, and other digestive problems. Most promise
to ensure complete digestion, and some claim to remove toxins. As with any supplement, consult with your vet before administering probiotics or digestive enzymes.
joint supplements
Glucosamine and Chondroitin are proving to be one of the
safest and best treatments for the crippling effects of osteoarthritis that affect aging cats. Used as indicated, there are very
few side effects. Your vet can help you decide if your cat will
benefit from it, and determine the proper dosage.
vitamin supplements
Researchers and veterinarians are concerned with the
possibility of vitamin toxicity with fat -soluble vitamins, especially vitamins A and D, which are stored in
the body. It's important to never exceed the recommended dosage, and not to administer large numbers
of different supplements together unless your vet
prescribes it. However, if you feed your cat a homemade diet or a diet high in table scraps, you should
give her a high quality vitamin/mineral supplement.
You should also give your cat a vitamin/mineral supplement if he/she is ill or has a poor appetite since
he/she's not receiving her daily requirements through
the food she eats.
raw food supplements
If you're feeding your cat a non -commercial raw diet,
he/she will need raw food supplements to ensure that
the diet is complete and balanced. With the proliferation of raw food adherents, you'll have plenty of
choices for raw food diet supplements. Most are easily combined with your meat, and most recommend
the addition of fruit or vegetables, including cooked
green beans, broccoli, pumpkin or bananas. Some
dietary supplements can provide miracle cures for
what ails your cat, but others can do more harm than
good. Do not assume that a supplement you're taking
will provide the same benefits for your cat, and never
administer a human supplement to your pets; always
choose a formula for cats.

patterns: glorious tabbies
“Tabby” is a pattern, not a colour, or a breed. The tabby
pattern is so popular that it can be found in many pedigreed
cats today, and is accepted in a number of breeds worldwide.
Although there are many variations of each, the tabby pattern
falls into four basic classes, namely: Classic, Mackerel, Spotted
and Ticked.
The
Classic Tabby pattern can easily be noticed because
the cat will have swirls and a circle on its side. It also has a
"butterfly" pattern across its shoulders which lead into thick
lines down the spine.
The
Mackerel
Tabby pattern is defined by stripes in-
stead of swirls. This pattern does not have a "butterfly", but it
does have thinner spine lines than a Classic Tabby. The solid
stripes on the body go from the spine to the belly.
The
Spotted
Tabby pattern has spots instead of lines.
The spine lines will also be spotted.
The
Ticked Tabby pattern is a little more complex in that
each hair shaft has "bands" of light and dark color on it. Overall, you will see an evenness to the pattern and the cat will not
obviously look like a "normal" tabby would. If you look closely, you can see the ticking on this cat. Cats with an all-ticked
pattern almost shimmer in the sunlight, because of the color
variation.
Some distinctive feature of most tabby patterns:
 “M” on the forehead.
 Penciling on the face and Spiral on the cheeks
 Thumbprints on the ears.
 Necklace on the chest (some broken, some unbroken, dependent on the different breeds).
 Legs evenly barred.
 Tail evenly ringed and always ending in a dark tip.
 Ground colour in front of the ears, on the chin and clearly
separating the relevant pattern.
 Tabby pattern should be identifiable on both sides .
10
CFSA Informer
There are several myths about the distinctive “M” marking on tabbies’ foreheads.
Ancient Egyptian days
Cats were called Mau, most likely a reflection of their conversational sound. The word Mau also translated to seeing, or
light. Since cats' eyes appear so luminous at night, it was only
a couple of steps further to associate these glorious animals
with the moon, and their marking to reflect that relationship.
The Egyptian Mau is a direct descendant of those ancient
Egyptian cats; domesticated as an offspring of the African
Wild Cat, it carries the M to this day.
The Tabby in the Manger
Another wonderful legend about the origin of the "M" tells
about Mary and the tabby cat in the manger. It seems that
the baby Jesus was cold and fussing, and Mary asked the
manger animals to move in closer to warm him. The manger
was simply too small to accomplish that, but a little tabby cat
came in and nestled next to the baby, and cosseted Him with
purring and warmth. Mary was so grateful, she bestowed her
own initial, "M" on the cat's forehead.
Mohammed and the Tabby
Islam legend tells us that Mohammed loved cats. One story
says that he once cut off a sleeve of a garment when he had
to leave to attend prayer, rather than to disturb his cat, Muezza, who was sleeping on the sleeve. It is said that the reason he loved cats so much is that one once saved his life
when a snake crawled into his sleeve. (This may be a variation of the well-known Muezza story.) Legend also claims
that Mohammed bestowed on cats the ability to always land
on their feet. A writing of Mohammed tells about his vision
of a woman punished in Hell for starving her cat to death.
These stories have all come down to the assumption that the
"M" symbolizes the enormous esteem which Mohammed felt
for cats and that the sight of the "M" on a cat's forehead invokes memories of Mohammed.
Beloved of Bast
Told by Jim Willis in his story, Beloved of Bast, which is included in his book, "Pieces of my Heart - Writings Inspired by Animals and Nature." It tells the tale of an old brown tabby
"barn cat" by the name of "Mother".
Another frequently quoted piece says that in Ancient Egypt,
cats were worshiped as gods, and the cat has never forgotten
this. Indeed, the Goddess Bastet was depicted with a cat's
head and Ra, the Sun God was often depicted as a cat.
Small wonder that tabby cats are particularly worthy of the
esteem in which we hold them. In fact, many of them are
creating their own legends today, a fact to which many of you
will attest.
