Teacher Only Day
Kia Ora te Whānau!
Haere Mai! Welcome!
After what was the best summer since I moved to New Zealand (in 2002!) it was a pleasure to catch up with so many of you last
week. It was wonderful also to welcome all our new families. We are all still getting used to the change around we have had,
with the seniors up at the foyer end of the corridor, using Room 4b (formerly the pod) as a classroom and the New Entrants in
Room 9.
We have been delighted to welcome new staff, Mieke Scott and Nadia Lazarus (Rooms 2 and 5 respectively) and see some
staff, Norah Wilson (New Entrant teacher), Jill Cahill (Reading Recovery teacher) and Marianne Coldham (released DP)
embracing their new roles.
If you didn’t make it to your child’s interview last Monday, and still have to pick up stationery, there are packs left at the office so
please see Irene or Fiona as soon as you can. If you would still like to have an appointment with your child’s new teacher,
please contact them directly.
New Toys for the Playground
Last year, the School Council raised money for outdoor games. The children all voted on which games they would like to buy.
During the holidays, the giant Connect Four, chess and Jenga arrived. We are still waiting for the Pick-up-sticks to come. Apart
from School Council’s fund raising efforts (the toy sale at the Duathlon) we also have the Devonport RSA to thank for their
donation and all the Enviro Schools ‘tour’ children who received a fee for hosting a group of group of Omani teaching students
from Auckland University.
Break Times and Eating at Bayswater
This term, in light of some recent research about promoting good eating
habits in school students, we are experimenting with some of our eating
times. We would like to ensure that all children are eating a healthy
amount of food while they are at school. We realise that some children are
so keen to go and play that they find it difficult to sit still and eat what has
been provided for them.
From next week, milk will be available from just before school for any child who would
like it. The juniors will then break for a ‘read and feed’ time at around 10am. This is a
time when teachers will read to children and children may eat a piece of fruit or vegetable if they wish during the story. At
morning tea time, we have reversed the times for eating and playing so the children go out to play at 11 and then sit down for
something to eat at a quarter past. Lunchtime has remained unchanged.
We have already run into a few snags with the reversal of times at morning tea but are persevering for the time being! If you
notice any change in what your child brings home from school uneaten in his or her lunchbox, please let me know as we will
evaluate the changes at the end of term and decide whether to stick with it, change back or try something else.
We recommend that children come to school with plenty of fruit and or raw vegetables (prepared to make it easier to eat – for
example, oranges pre-peeled or easy peel) and with an item like a sandwich, pasta, wrap or rice. Children should be
encouraged to eat these items before treat items such as baking. They do not need drinks as filtered water is always available
(as well as cold milk in the morning).
Sun Smart
We are being really vigilant about teaching the children to be sun smart this term. They need to
come to school appropriately dressed ie with covered shoulders and a hat. Although we have a
small number of spare hats at school, children should not rely on these and those without hats will
be kept in the shade rather than playing on the field or participating in outdoor activities. Applying
sunscreen before school is also a good idea. Classes have large bottles of sun screen available
for children to reapply during the day.
Spare Clothes
If your child is in the junior school, it is a good idea to pack a change of clothes in his or her bag each day.
If your child is older and has spare clothes which s/he has outgrown, we would be grateful for donations of:
shorts, tops, skirts and undies for the sick bay.
The latest Weet-Bix TV ad featuring the All Blacks was
filmed at Bayswater School over the summer holidays.
Look out for it soon!
