‘How to protect in this crazy world? UN Peacekeeping - Addressing Sexual Violence
in the DRC’: 11 February, 7.30pm, Parish Hall, St George’s Church, 105 High Street, Belfast
BT1 2AG. This public talk is co-hosted by the Committee Members of the United Nations
Association for N. Ireland and St George’s Church Mothers’ Union. Main speaker is Angus
Lambkin, a standby UN Expert on Mission awaiting deployment to complex emergencies. His
most recent deployment was with the UN Stabilization Mission to the Democratic Republic of
Congo as a civilian peacekeeper. Please note: should Angus be called away on an emergency

The Human Rights Impact of Tax and Fiscal Policy: 12 February, Radisson Blu Hotel,
Dublin. This Christian Aid conference, which will draw both on Ireland’s experience, as well as
on examples from around the world will examine the impact that tax and fiscal policies have on
states ability to ensure citizens enjoy their basic human rights. The conference brings together
speakers from the global south, tax justice activists, Irish government officials, the OECD,
journalists and the private sector. Admission is free, but registration is required. To register for

“Ukraine: one year after Maidan”: 12 February, Helix, Dublin City University. The aim of
this event is to present the complex situation in Ukraine from various perspectives, to discuss
the necessary steps for a comprehensive and sustainable solution, and to explore whether there
is a potential for small states such as Ireland to play a role in building a EU consensus. The
keynote speaker will be Aleksander Kwaśniewski (President of Poland 1995-2005). The event is
hosted by DCU’s Institute for International Conflict Resolution and Reconstruction (IICRR).

Equality Commission and the National Women’s Council of Ireland are hosting a high level oneday conference to mark Beijing+20. The conference will be opened by President of Ireland,
Michael D Higgins. Key issues being discussed include women in decision-making, women’s

LASC Workshop on Latin American Politics and Society: 21 and 28 March, International
Education Academy, Dublin 1. The two day workshop will provide key knowledge in the area of
Latin American Politics. Topics to be covered include; Debt Crisis, Neoliberalism, Leftist Politics,
Development Issues, Indigenous Politics, Populism, social movements and income inequality.

Annual International Criminal Court Summer School: 15-19 June, NUI Galway.
Organised by The Irish Centre for Human Rights at the National University of Ireland Galway.

 Programme Support Co-ordinator: The purpose of this post is to support programme

Potato Consultant. A coalition of development organisations that has been working in the
potato sector for a number of years is seeking a consultant to undertake a study into the
impact of current work and the potential for its replicability and scale. The assignment will
require research that would involve a mix of field work in Ethiopia, Kenya and Uganda,
together with desk work in three further countries. A number of NGOs (Vita, Gorta-Self Help
Africa, Concern Universal and Farm Africa), research institutes (International Potato Centre
(CIP), Teagasc and the Irish Potato Federation and government bodies that have worked in
the potato sector over a number of years have formed a coalition that intends to pursue an

RCSI Capacity Development Programmes Seeks Intern (3 weeks). The RCSI COSECSA
Collaboration Programme is a capacity development partnership between the Royal College of
Surgeons in Ireland and the College of Surgeons in East, Central and Southern Africa. The intern
will be responsible for 1) supporting the development of a new COSECSA website, 2) inputting
and formatting data for an interactive map, 3) organising video animation content, and 4)

Volunteering opportunities with Vincentian Lay Missionaries (VLM):
 Summer Volunteers needed for Ethiopia: VLM are recruiting volunteers to deliver a four
week summer school for 7-15 year olds at various locations across Ethiopia. The school will
run from early July to early August. The ideal candidates will be primary or secondary school
teachers, sports coaches, youth workers, drama, music or art teachers or individuals with
significant experience in working with groups of children. The placement cost is €3000 and

Dublin 2. Quechua is one of the most used languages by Andean peoples of Latin America,
especially those who are called indigenous and inhabiting countries like Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador
and Chile.Learn Quechua means opening step in the Andean Cosmovision and into the culture of
their ancestors. This Quechua course will allow participants to conduct a conversation in daily
life and also learn about the Quechua culture in Bolivia. The course is designed for beginners,

Daw Khin Mar Mar Kyi, the Daw Aung San Suu Kyi Research Fellow in Gender & Burmese
Studies at Oxford University. Filmed along the Thailand-Burma (Myanmar) border, ‘Dreams of
Dutiful Daughters’ documents the experiences of Burmese women in poverty who, desperate to
survive and support their families, cross the border to find work in Thailand. Dr. Daw Khin Mar
Mar Kyi will introduce the film and the film screening will be followed by an interview (in

Call for organisations to take part in the Global Citizen Award for volunteers. Link
international volunteering with development education with the Global Citizen Award. This award
aims to motivate International Volunteers to become global justice advocates within their local
communities through Development Education. The award is based on volunteers’ level of
engagement in awareness raising activities on their return. Awards are conferred by an awards
committee, which is formed by representatives from stakeholders in the sector. Each
organisation will be supported by an EIL staff member and provided with all the materials
