for students conditionally admitted on GESP

Placement levels will be sent to graduate advisors only,
usually the day after placement-testing.
Level 7 – The student’s English proficiency in this
skill area is sufficient to do graduate-level work.
Tested out of GESP in this skill.
Levels 6, 5, and 4 – English instruction is
necessary for the student to meet graduate-level
English proficiency.
Level 6 – The student’s English proficiency in this
skill area is weak and will interfere with the
student’s ability to do graduate-level work.
Level 5 – The student’s English proficiency in this
skill area is very weak and will limit the student’s
ability to do university-level work.
Level 4 – The student’s English proficiency in this
skill area is extremely weak. The student may
require two or more semesters of English
instruction to achieve graduate-level English
proficiency.
Students not yet admitted to the Graduate School
who place below Level 4 will be referred to the
Intensive English Program.

Student A has graduate-level English proficiency
in Reading and needs English instruction for
Listening/Speaking and Writing.
Student B needs English instruction in the three
skill areas and may require 2 semesters to reach
proficiency in Writing.
Students in levels 4, 5, and 6 attend the same
GESP class in each of the skill areas. Students
receive individualized instruction as needed.
Students who take 1 GESP class and 2 graduate
classes maintain a full-time F-1 student status;
likewise, students who take 2 GESP classes and 1
graduate class maintain a full-time F-1 student
status.

GESP is a non-credit intensive English program
for international graduate students. Student
majors have included MBA, Accounting,
Engineering, SUPA, Architecture, Sociology, and
many others.
Classes meet 20 hours per week on Tuesdays
through Fridays for 15 weeks (10 weeks in the
summer). The workload for each class is
equivalent to a graduate-level class.
Class Content. Each of the 3 courses is contentbased; students use texts and journals in their
disciplines.
Writing: Students write 4(+) papers on selfselected topics relevant to their disciplines.
Students use materials from 20 scholarly journals
to inform their writing and follow the formats
most commonly followed in their disciplines.

*The Questioning Method as a Teaching Tool
*BISDN and Future Broadband Communication
*Risk and On-line Information Security
*Improving the Utilization of Riparian Areas
*Systematic Risk in Bond Investments
*Phonetic Assessment of Korean Vowels
Reading: Students use a discipline-specific text
and 20 articles from journals in their disciplines to
learn ways to increase their reading speed and
comprehension of academic materials, and to
build their discipline-specific vocabulary.
Students keep a weekly reading journal on a
variety of topics. Students participate in and lead
group discussions covering texts read throughout
the semester.
Listening/Speaking: Students prepare and give at
least five 10-minute presentations on topics in
their disciplines as they learn to reduce their
accents, (work on American English intonational
patterns and phrasing). They work one-on-one
with the instructor and with pronunciation
software to improve their pronunciation and to
reduce their first-language interference. Students
also learn to critically listen to lectures and take
lecture notes from 7 videotaped academic lectures.
Successful completion of Listening/Speaking, with
extra work, may be used for ITA certification.

GESP Coordinator will directly register students.
GESP tuition is due during the second week of
University classes (after Grad School tuition) and
