70th Birthday of Prince Hans-Adam II
The Philately is paying tribute to the
70th birthday of Liechtenstein’s head of
state, His Serene Highness Prince HansAdam II, with a souvenir sheet. Only the
colours and the text of this stamp differ
to the stamp issued in November 2014
to commemorate the 25th government jubilee of the Prince. The souvenir sheet
“70th Birthday of Prince Hans-Adam II”,
which was printed in a combination of
offset and steel engraving, will appear
right on time for the 70th birthday of the
Prince Regnant on 14 February 2015 and
consists of two special stamps at a value
of CHF 1.00 and CHF 2.00 each.
Prince Hans-Adam II, who was born as
the eldest son of Prince Franz Joseph II
of Liechtenstein and Princess Gina in
1945, grew up in Castle Vaduz with his

he completed in 1969 with the degree of
Licentiate. After taking over the affairs of
state from his father in 1984 he, in turn,
handed these over to his eldest son, Hereditary Prince Alois, after 20 years of
governance. Since then, the Prince has increasingly concentrated on managing the

Europe – Toys
Toys are the theme of this year’s Europe
stamps issued by the member states of
the trade association representing European public postal operators, PostEurop.
The Liechtenstein issue comprises two
special stamps showing figurines produced in Liechtenstein in the 1940s, a
“Polar Bear” (value: CHF 1.40) and a
“Goat” (value: CHF 1.40). The artistic realisation focuses on the actual purpose of
the figurines – playing – so the pictures
look like snapshots of childlike playing
scenes: The polar bear is enjoying the climate in the freezer compartment of a refrigerator and the goat is proudly climbing a lemon. The toy factory in Schaan at
that time made nativity figurines and
other animal figures for several years. A
kind of modelling material was developed in advance on the basis of kiesel-
FDC
guhr in protracted tests. This was pressed
into metal moulds and painted by hand
after hardening. The figurines found a
ready market worldwide. In 1949, one of
the company’s founders left the company.
Under the name Spiwa, his partner
merged with another company in the
business and continued to make toys for
some years afterwards.

International Year of Light
Sunlight is the foundation of life for humans, animals and plants. Light in general
is also a key subject of science and culture.
The United Nations proclaimed 2015 as the
International Year of Light: 1000 years ago
it was proven for the first time that light
sources emit light rays, exactly 200 years
ago the wave character of light was discovered and the quantum theory of light is
110 years old.
Art.-Nr. 215.03.3
Experimenting with light arouses scientific
curiosity. The special stamp “Play of Light”
(value: CHF 1.90) permits the observer to
conduct three experiments relating to the
anniversaries mentioned. The background of
the stamp glows in the dark owing to its
fluorescent colour. It turns into a source of
light if it was exposed to sunlight beforehand. The wave theory can be observed if
the stamp is held up to a source of light.
FDC

The micro-perforations in the paper become
easily visible as the light waves are diffracted through the small openings. For the
experiment on quantum theory, the light
pink colour behind the ball was printed
with a special colour. When irradiated with
UV light, the colour turns from pink to violet.

Anniversaries
In 2015, four special anniversaries are
being celebrated in Liechtenstein. The
Liechtenstein Traditional Costume Association was founded in 1965. As a result of
its commitment, the umbrella association
of all the country’s member groups that
wear traditional costume and foster customs caused the cultivation and use of
traditional costume to flourish (“50 Years
of Liechtenstein Traditional Costume Association”, value: CHF 0.85). The Liech-
tenstein Development Service (LED) was
also set up 50 years ago. Since then it
has been providing official development
aid on behalf of Liechtenstein's
government and is active in various countries across the globe. In this context,
LED’s primary focus is to help people to
help themselves (“ 50 Years of Liechtenstein Development Service”, value:
CHF 1.00).
In 1840, the world’s first stamp “One
Penny Black” was circulated in Britain. To
commemorate this, the first stamp issued
in Liechtenstein in 1912 is depicted on
the special stamp “175 Years of Stamps”
(value: CHF 1.40). The special stamp
“25 Years UNO Membership” (value:
CHF 1.90) is appearing on the occasion
of Liechtenstein’s 25 years of membership in the United Nations, which currently comprises 193 countries.

His Serene Highness Prince Hans-Adam II is
celebrating his 70th birthday on 14 February
2015 – an occasion to which tribute is being paid with a special sheetlet. This is, of
course, not the first time that Liechtenstein’s head of state is being immortalised
145.01
on a postage stamp. Even his birth was celebrated with three stamps in 1945 and in
the following decades the portrait of today’s regent adorned Liechtenstein stamps
on a regular basis. We have compiled a
small selection of them for you.
