10H’s Molly Lake and Zarrin
Choudhury created a chocolate
cookie with a Nutella and salted
caramel centre.
The competition involved some
comedy moments, including scraping
caramel from Rocky bars as caramel
had been forgotten from the shopping
list, taking the cakes for a walk to
cool them down so they could be
decorated and ‘listening’ to the cake
to check if it was cooked.
The students were supported by
many of their friends and staff who
came along to see them in action and
help with the tasting of course.
The products were judged by the
year team Mr Wakeley, Mrs Ewers,
Mrs Stuart and languages teacher
Mrs Green. Needless to say we all ate
far too much as they were far too
tempting to stop!

HAT
a
great
bake-off
competition for the second year
running!
On Wednesday January 21s 2015,
Year 10 students took part in a Great
Bake Off competition inspired by the
TV programme as part of an interform competition.
In Year 9 students took part in a
similar competition individually with
a free choice of what to cook. This
year the student council requested
something a little different, paired
entries and a chocolate theme.
Students from all tutor groups
baked their products the previous
week at home for their tutor groups
to try during morning registration
and vote for their favourite. They
were judged on flavour, texture and
presentation. Entries included:

chocolate chip cookie, brownie and
melted marshmallow stack.

salted caramel centre. Both girls
received a recipe book as a prize for
their delightful creation, hoping to
inspire more cooking, and who
knows, maybe even the next celebrity
chef!
All entries were superb and it was
a very close competition, well done to
all involved!

kitchen.
Students were quite surprised at
the long hours Luke and Tony work.
(5 days a week 8am to 3pm with an
hour or so break, before starting
again to finish at about 10-11.30pm.)
Luke also explained that they work
Christmases and bank holidays, so if
you want to be a chef you need to be
very passionate as it is long hours
and hard work, although he did
emphasise it is a very rewarding job.
They were interested to hear that
although it is a very male dominated
industry there are no reasons why
women can’t be great chefs, and Luke
and Tony went on to say that some of
best chefs know are women.

E were delighted to welcome
Head Chef Luke Bailey and
Sous Chef Tony Roberts from the
Crown to the Technology Department
on Monday January 19th as guests
for Year 10 Catering students.
Luke and Tony brought a wealth
of expertise, skills and experience
with them to share. Luke has worked
around the world including Australia
and also in the 2 Michelin star
‘world’s best restaurant’ restaurant
Noma in Copenhagen; working with
both Valentine Warner and Henry
Harris during his career. Tony,
originally from South Africa, has also
travelled the world during his
catering career and has now been
settled in England for around 8
years. Since settling in England he
has worked in various restaurants
with TA group of hotels as well as
their outside caterers to gain a huge
variety of experience.
During the afternoon Luke and
Tony demonstrated two dishes for the
students, individual apple tarte tatin
with honeycomb and blue cheese
soufflé. They also served afternoon
tea in preparation for the students
controlled assessment and talked to
the students about careers, training
and the industry including job

N January 19th, Sixth Form
students had the opportunity to
hear Sadie Coles talk about her
experiences in the contemporary Art
world during a lecture provided by
Speakers for Schools. Sadie Coles
built up her business from scratch
and now owns three large
contemporary art gallery spaces in
central London. She also runs the
Frieze international Art Fair which is
a showcase for art nationally and
internationally. Sadie talked to the
students about her links with
Damien Hirst, Jeff Koons and how
she came to represent high profile
artists such as Sarah Lucas in her
Gallery. Students gained valuable
insights into the commercial art
world and had the chance to ask
questions about how to succeed in
creative careers, and the best routes
to becoming a professional artist.

clocks. They sold well as we priced
them at good value for money and
they looked high quality with our
quirky labels.
When our group first started in
the process of Young Enterprise, we
struggled to organise ourselves into a
productive group. We started off with
having one weekly meeting, but soon
realised that this wasn’t enough
considering the amount of tasks that
needed to be completed. Currently,
we meet twice a week and do work
related to our ideas in our own free
time. We have been able to overcome
a number of people leaving the
group, and have adapted easily to the
new group size. We have had to make
a few role changes along the way in
order to let everyone have the best
role possible for them. I feel that
communication amongst the group
has significantly improved since we
first started, as we have learnt that
we need to constantly share ideas
and our progress.
We are now moving on and
developing our product ideas into
different areas, including recycled tin
cans made into various products
such as stationery holders, for
various target audiences.

Young Enterprise –
“Vision”
A
S we formed our young
enterprise group, we were
excited at the prospect of making as
much money as we could and
developing skills that we could carry
forward. The first challenge was
identifying a product or service we
could make profitable. Initially, we
had the idea of decorating small
glass hearts and then selling them
for a low price but still making a
profit; we figured that if we keep the
price low we would have a higher
selling rate. Unfortunately we found
that the demand for glass hearts was
nowhere near as high as we initially
expected and we decided to abandon
the idea altogether.
After doing some research we
c a m e u p with th e id e a o f
manufacturing clocks made out of
vinyl records. We managed to
purchase a wide range of records,
both small and large, and assembled
the mechanisms ourselves. The
clocks look great and are made to a
professional standard. We found that
the clocks sold well in Woodbridge
and really sky-rocketed. We also
decided to make small candles and

candy cane sales and busking. A
staff quiz team won the £650 2nd
prize in the Rotary Club Quiz and
donated it to the wheelchair fund.
The publicity raised during the
appeal prompted donations from the
wider community including from:
Ruby Ford in Bawdsey, Hopkins
Homes, St Audrey’s Golf Club,
Broadreach Consultants, Cory
Logistics, Martlesham Brass and the
contributions made to the Virgin
Moneygiving website. The amount
raised from these generous folk was
over £5,000.
The final total, arrived at in an
amazing short 12 week period, was a
staggering £19,659.48.

Fundraising
I
N late September, the school
launched an appeal to help buy a
new wheelchair for one of our Year 9
students.
Miles has Duchenne Muscular
Dystrophy and needs a specially
adapted bespoke electric wheelchair
to accommodate his needs as he
grows. Such a chair is very expensive
and the school community rallied to
support the appeal.
£2,000 was donated from the
proceeds of the 2nd Hand Uniform
Shop. An astonishing £11,469.90
was received from events held in
school including; the WWI Centenary
concert, Year 7 Halloween Disco,
Rowathon, SuperRock, non-uniform
day, a Staff Bake Off, silent auction,
cake sale and raffle, carol singing,

N Saturday December 31 st,
approximately 50 students
from 10 local schools met for a day
of talks and workshops on all
things German.
The programme included a talk
by Silke Mentchen of Cambridge
University, who spoke about
studying German at university. Alex
Pickering, co-director and joint
owner of a business development
company, demonstrated how
German can help you build a
successful career. Holly Dowsing of
the University of Essex gave an
account of her year abroad studying
in Berlin at the time the German
National Football Team won the
World Cup.
A pronunciation master class
allowed students to fine-tune their
German speaking skills. Patrick,
Farlingaye’s own German Language
Assistant, led a session on German
pop music. During the lunch break,
students had the opportunity to
find out about scholarship
opportunities and to chat to our
current Year 12 and Year 13
students about studying German at
A level. The day was rounded off
with a quiz and prize draw.
I would like to thank the
University of Cambridge German
Department and Routes in
Languages East for their financial
support, the Goethe Insitut London
and Essex University for sending
two excellent speakers. Special
thanks to the German Deli London,
who sent us some delicious German
biscuits and chocolates to sample!

County ‘Final 4’
HE U16 boys played in the
County ‘Final 4’ at ‘Inspire’
Suffolk on February 3rd. The first
game of the day was Farlingaye
against St. Benedicts School of Bury
St. Edmunds. Farlingaye started very
well, moving the ball around the
court quickly and creating good
opportunities to score every time they
attacked. By half-time Farlingaye
hadn’t opened up a commanding lead
and it was nice to see all of the squad
contributing to the game. In the
second half Farlingaye were able to
slow down the pace of the game and
conserve some energy for the final!
Final Score: Farlingaye 54 – 43 St.
Benedicts
The final was played against
Copleston, whose squad includes a
number of individuals who play
basketball to a very good standard
out of school. Farlingaye were also
without a key player in the final,
Lewis Barker had unfortunately
picked up an injury in the previous
game. This seemed to spur on the
team who started the game brightly
and were scoring freely in the first
half. Defensively, Bradley Docker was
dominant under the basket and Ben
Mobee was putting on a scoring
masterclass at the other end,
finishing with 47 points in the game.
Farlingaye led by 5 points at halftime, although Copleston fought back
in the 3rd quarter and their quality
began to show. Although Farlingaye
continued to battle, Copleston began
to build up a lead and they finished
well to win the game by 12 points.

Suffolk County Cup Semi-Final
ARLINGAYE
travelled
to
Pakefield for their U12 Suffolk
County Cup Semi-Final. Despite
being slightly apprehensive, the boys
were very much looking forward to
playing on Pakefield’s brand new allweather surface. In still conditions
and despite the cold weather it was a
perfect day for a game of football. The
game itself started in a somewhat
scrappy manner, with neither team
able to assert any control on the
game for a prolonged period of time.
It was in fact Pakefield who had the
first real attacks of any note, with
Taylor Sumpter putting in a good
block during one attack and
Sebastian Mobee making a good save
after another. As the game
progressed Farlingaye began to exert
more control on the proceedings,
with Tom Shannon, Elliot Baskett
and Will Oxborrow linking up to good
effect.
After a nice one-two in the box
between Elliot and Will, the former
was brought down after a tackle from
behind and the referee quite rightly
pointed to the spot. With a bit of
hesitation, newly elected penalty
taker Taylor Sumpter decided to take
the penalty and he smashed the ball
high into the roof of the net to give
Farlingaye a 1-0 lead. After scoring,
Farlingaye started to exude even
more confidence, with Tom Shannon
starting to look really dangerous
down the left midfield, creating havoc
on a few occasions, although
Farlingaye were unable to capitalise
on this, meaning the scoreline was 1-

0 at half time.
After a few tactical changes at half
time and with the introduction of
Alfie Prior, Farlingaye started the
second half quite confidently, Alfie in
particular impressing in attack,
whilst Taylor Sumpter was busy in
both defence and attack, putting in a
phenomenal performance.
Will Oxborrow looked comfortable
in possession and spread the ball
wide, resulting in chances for both
Tom Shannon and Elliot Baskett,
although neither found the net.
With the score still 1-0 to
Farlingaye, Pakefield started to pile
on the pressure again and had a
really strong finish to the game.
However, defenders James Leech,
Dan Smith and Ben Williams played
exceptionally well and Sebastian
Mobee was his usual excellent self in
goal. As a result the game finished 10 to Farlingaye and the boys progress
through to the Suffolk County Cup
Final.
Congratulations boys, a welldeserved reward for all your efforts in
training and games this year so far.

assertive throughout. In the next
game, Farlingaye faced a much
sterner test, playing Felixstowe, who
had played a few more games this
year than Farlingaye and also had
some players who were much taller
than most of the Farlingaye team.
Despite this stiffer test, Farlingaye
were still able to claim a 46-34
victory, with Seb again impressing,
this time ably assisted by the everimproving Raff Dawson and Tom
Hindley, as well as Tom Rankin.
In Farlingaye’s third game, they
played Westbourne, lots of the boys
played well in this game, with Archie
Page and Hayden Sykes impressing
during the 50-2 victory.
As a result of these victories
Farlingaye now progress through to
the Suffolk County Play-offs after
winning their group.

Anyone for Croquet?
C
ROQUET Club has recently
developed at Farlingaye with
over 25 students now having been
involved. Mid December we ran a mid
-winter mini tournament at the Fynn
Valley Golf Club (the local Ipswich
Croquet Club) which involved 16
students largely from Years 7-8 and
including 3 Year 11 boys who had
begun playing at the school during
the summer term of 2014. The day
was a great success including some
upset results. The tournament
comprised a range of doubles and
singles matches, it was great to see
the junior and senior students
working with each other and testing
their skills on a full sized lawn –
many for the first time. The senior

ITH record numbers at training
this year, it is clear that the
Year 7 boys have caught the
basketball bug. Their enthusiasm for
developing their basketball skills has
been highly impressive. It is therefore
no surprise that the Year 7 boys’
basketball team have made a great
start to their league fixtures so far.
Thus far they have played Copleston,
Westbourne and Felixstowe academy
and have put in great performances
against all of those teams.
Against Copleston, Farlingaye won
96-18, all of the boys played well in
this match, with Seb Mobee leading

boys (Chay Hathway, Sam Parkinson
and Liam Flin) were expected to go
throughout the day undefeated but
this was not to be the case. Luke
Goold-Hannatt (yr 8) provided a
shock upset beating Sam Parkinson
7-6 in a highly competitive match. All
players involved showed significant
improvement throughout and enjoyed
the challenge of transferring their
skills from the school rugby pitch to
the putting green lawns at the club.
Players who showed heaps of
potential and got extremely good
results included; Albie Willett and
Eden Rogers (yr 7), Sophie Benton
and Keeley Gooderham (yr 8), in
addition to the students previously
mentioned. They have been attending
croquet club on a weekly basis
throughout the winter and some have
become members at the club.
Throughout the summer term they
will be receiving additional coaching
and support from me and a local
member who is a 5 x world champion
and regarded as the best player in
history to have ever grasped a mallet.
In June we will be taking a school
team to attempt to win the National
Secondary School Championships
and students who do particularly well
will be involved in an England youth
development squad with an eye to
them being selected in the next U21
World Championships in 2017.

OTH the girls’ and boys’ teams
qualified for the county finals
having won the Ipswich and South
Suffolk competition. Sports Hall
Athletics is a very fun and frantic
event with students doing a range of
running events alongside events such
as standing long jump, standing
triple jump, speed bounce and shot
p u t. Th e s tuden ts lo v e th e
atmosphere and competitive nature
of the event and they always perform
with so much determination - some
had also run in the cross country
finals earlier in the day but were
determined not to miss this event.
They all did fantastically well and
showed tremendous team spirit and
everyone was delighted when both
the boys’ and the girls’ team finished
in first place to be crowned County
Champions. Well done!

Dear Parent/Carer
I hope you have managed to get to see “Little Shop of Horrors”.
I’ve had the absolute pleasure of watching all five performances
and they have been superb. As always, the quality of the drama,
dance and music is well beyond what you would expect in a
school and the students have clearly put so much time and
energy into perfecting their performances. They are all so
professional. Many thanks to Ms Tyndale-Hardy, Mr Picton,
Miss Lansdowne, Miss Baldwin and Ms Martino for all the time
and commitment they have given.
Congratulations to the 19 students who competed for Suffolk
at the Anglian Cross Country finals with some fantastic results
and especially to the students who we think will be selected for
the English Schools Cross Country Finals. Particular
congratulations to Jack Millar who finished in bronze place – a
truly excellent achievement. We have two trips leaving this
weekend – our ski trip and a geography trip to Iceland.
We were again delighted to see the official publication of the
exam results. It is only when you see the official results in the
local and national context that we realise just how well we have
done! At A level we were the highest performing state school in
Suffolk and were better than several of the selective independent
schools. We were especially pleased to be ranked again as the
joint highest school for the ‘value added’ score. This is a measure
we really like as the ability of the students is irrelevant and means
that last year we added more to our students than other schools.
At GCSE we were the highest state school for students achieving
A*-C in both Maths and English and our Maths results were the
best in the County. Our 5A*-C with English and Maths was 15%
above the national average. Given that we have what is categorised
as an average intake in terms of prior attainment this is a
considerable achievement. Both sets of results remind us of just
how hard our fabulous students worked last year and it was
great to see how impressive their success was.

We have our school Experience Morning coming up on March
3rd. This is a great time for parents to see the school in action
for a morning. A separate letter has gone home. You are also
about to receive the Activities Week booklet. I’m sure you will
agree with me that we are very lucky to have so many staff
willing to run all these extra events for the students. We have
consulted with parents about their views on Activities Week and
the feedback was overwhelmingly positive and that it should
continue.
We have recently discussed students having beards/moustaches
in school. This has always been permitted in the Sixth Form.
Students in KS3 and KS4 have always been asked to be clean
shaven. Governors discussed this recently, due to the current
trend towards beards and agreed to make it formally part of the
‘uniform and appearance’ policy that students in
KS3 and KS4 should be clean shaven. As this is an addition to
the policy, I thought it would be helpful to inform parents. If you
have any further thoughts on this, I know the governors would
be pleased to hear from you.
We have also been trialling sending out our CAT reports home to
parents. I know that some parents have mixed views on how
useful they are. Mr Moran would be delighted to hear from any
parent with any views they may have. There is a link to the

Don’t forget the FHSF Quiz Night on Friday February 27th.
Tickets cost £7 and £5 for students and are available from
reception. The ticket price includes a Ploughman’s Supper and
there is a bar and a raffle. Please also put the date of our ‘Party
Night’ into your diary – Saturday May 9th. This is an off-shoot
of our balls with a band and bar and groups get together to book
a table and bring their food. At just £10 a ticket it should be a
great night.

We say farewell to Mr Hearn who has been a one-to-one
tutor in Maths for a year. We wish him well as he is moving
abroad.

The French Exchange students are visiting Farlingaye on

Year 9 Options Evening is on Tuesday 24th February.
We are holding our FHSF Quiz Night on Friday 27th February
at 7pm. Tickets cost £7 and £5 for students and are
available from reception.
The School Experience Morning takes place on 3rd March.
There is a Progress Evening for Years 9-13 being held on
Wednesday 4th March. Individual appointments will be sent
home.
There is a Gifted and Talented trip to Sky Headquarters in
London on 4th March.
The A2 Evening Recital at St Mary’s Church is on 5th March
at 6.30 pm. Everyone is welcome – the music is always
stunning.
There is a Year 11 Revision Evening for parents on 9th March.
Sinfonia are performing at ‘A Celebration of Schools’ Music’
at Snape Maltings Concert Hall on 11th March.
Year 11 Day Residentials are being held between 16th March
and 23rd April. Letters will be posted home.
The Indoor Rowing Club are taking part in the National Junior
Indoor Rowing Championships, London on 20th March.
The Year 9 Mock Trial competition is being held on 21st March.
The Primary School Choral Concerts take place on 23rd and
24th March.
The Farlingaye French Exchange takes place from 25th March
to 1st April.
