The barbarity of the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) has shocked the world.
ISIL has exploited insecurity in parts of Iraq and Syria to grow into a potent force and
many nations agree that something must be done. The public debate on what
specifically New Zealand can do, and should do, has been largely confined to the
character of a military involvement: "behind the wire" training or something else?
Discussion on root causes for ISIL and how these are best addressed, has been limited.
In this panel discussion, Diplosphere will explore the background that has given rise to
ISIL, propose the ways of addressing the root causes of extremism, and question how
newly minted UN Security Council-member New Zealand can leverage its strengths for
a lasting resolution, in this troubled part of the world.
