Dear Parents,
This month I am providing an analysis of our 2014 Terra Nova (TN) Objective Performance Summary scores in all subject areas compared to diocesan and national averages. You will note that our diocesan scores remain higher in all subject areas as compared to national averages. St. Paul’s achievement gains continue to be higher than
both national and diocesan averages. In many areas this difference is significant.
So what sets our Catholic schools apart from the pack? “Three things, say educators,
parents and community leaders: faith, academics and service (NCEA, 2013).”

Faith— children are taught not just the basics of Christianity, but how to have a relationship with God.

Academics, which in Catholic schools are held to very high standards, help each
child reach his or her potential.

Service, the giving of one's time and effort to help others, is taught both as an
expression of faith and good citizenship.
These three priorities are not only integrated into every aspect of our Catholic schools
but woven into the very lives of our teachers, staff, students, and parents. This is what
in my mind makes the biggest difference. We don’t just talk the talk; we walk it every
day with a community of faith that is bigger than life itself.
That being said, the teachers and the administration have been meeting across the
grade levels to make data part of an ongoing cycle of instructional improvement. We
are examining the results of school assessments to identify the causes of our strengths
and shortcomings. As part of our student performance goal for our school’s improvement plan, we will then be teaching students to examine their own data and set learning goals. This is just one component of our continued effort to build and maintain a
framework of school-wide support for student success.

The Terra Nova Objective Performance Summary shows how well the students performed
on each Terra Nova Common Core objective compared with other groups. Usually several
different objectives are measured within one content area. Each common core objective is
measured by four or more items.
The Objective Performance Index (OPI) is an estimate of the number of items for a specific
objective that a student could be expected to answer correctly if there had been 100 items

Items measuring the Common Core can ask students
to perform a series of tasks that measure multiple
standards. Gone are the days when test items map to
a only a single standard and a multiple-choice item is
sufficient for measuring what level of mastery a student has on a specific standard. The depth, rigor, and
complexity of the Common Core move beyond the
measurement ability of a multiple-choice test alone.

NEW HABITS FOR LENT
Junk food, video games, toys, and favorite television programs can make us happy for a while but the feeling does
not last. During Lent, we are reminded to stop going after
temporary happiness and choose lasting happiness that
comes from God. A good way to teach children this idea is
to use colors – one for each day of the week to represent a
Lenten habit. Write the habit on the assigned colored paper
and post it in a prominent spot in your home.
Monday – Pink for an increase in love in our hearts. We
start the week by showing extra kindness to anyone we
meet that day.
Tuesday – Green for God’s gift of creation. To honor all
that God has given us we do chores without being asked.
Wednesday – Yellow to share God’s light. We spend time
reading the Bible, a book on saints, or other spiritual
reading.
Thursday – Purple for sorrow. Help children perform an
examination of conscience.
Friday – Red for sacrifice. In addition to abstaining from
meat, give up a favorite activity, food, toy or game. Our
sacrifice honors Jesus’ great sacrifice on the Cross.
Saturday – White for the joy of forgiveness. We celebrate
God’s unending forgiveness by forgiving anyone who has
hurt us and asking for forgiveness from anyone we may
have hurt. Attend Confession as a family.

Your family recipe A family is like a batch of cookies. It won’t come
out right without the necessary raw ingredients plus generous additions
of faith, hope, and love, and just the right amount of “baking” in the
family oven with time and attention.
What to give up? Help children make age-appropriate choices of what
to give up for Lent so that they stick with their fast for the entire season.
