Main Road and 3rd Avenue, Anna Nagar
Western Extn., at around 3.30 p.m on Feb.
13.
He told Anna Nagar Times that there is
heavy traffic at the junction and the kids
and their parents (many of whom are senior citizens) who come pick them up find
it difficult cross the road. The drivers seldom stop to allow the pedestrians to cross,
he said. The traffic department should depute a constable at the junction to regulate traffic
during school opening and closing hours, he added.
Renovation work of East
Mogappair bus terminus
nearing completion
The renovation work of the spacious 1.5-acre
bus terminus in East Mogappair is nearing completion. The existing floor of the terminus has been
raised by a height of around 18 inches to prevent
flooding during monsoons.
At present, work on the installation of lights is
being carried out. Signboards are being prepared
according to bus routes and frequency. Steel gates
will be installed at the entrance of the terminus.
Over 90 per cent of the work including construction of shelters, time keeper’s office, laying
of access road inside the terminus, levelling of the
floor and bus bays, have been completed. According to the Metropolitan Transport Corporation
(MTC) officials, the renovated bus terminus would
be ready for operation by next month.
Cat rescued from well in
East Mogappair

A cat that fell into a dry well on ORI Salai,
East Mogappair, was rescued by Fire and
Rescue personnel attached to J. J. Nagar Fire
Station on the evening of Feb. 10.
As the animal was reluctant to come up,
rescue personnel lured it by dropping an auto
lock cage with a piece of meat in it. It was then
pulled out with ease and the animal was freed
instantly.
Fire and Rescue officer said that the animal
had inadvertently entered into the well in
search of food as the place has become a
habitat for rodents.
It was on the evening of Feb. 3 that another
cat was rescued by the personnel from an open
storm water drain in the locality, he added.
Rs. 605 crore sanctioned for
Campaign to revive lapsed
cleaning Cooum
The Tamilnadu Govt. recently sanctioned Rs. LIC policies extended
605 crore for the first phase of the work to clean
the 72-km long Cooum river by resettling 14,257
identified families living along the river to Okkiyum
(Thoraipakkam) and develop parks along the
banks of the river.
In the initial plan, illegal sewage outlets will be
closed, the banks will be cleaned and leveled and
parks, bicycle/walkers tracks will be laid. In the
next phase, a baby canal will be constructed in the
middle of the river for the free flow of water as the
river is cleaned and desilted. This is a major project
in which a number of authorities, including
Chennai Corporation, Metrowater, PWD, Slum
Clearance Board and Chennai River Restoration
Trust, will work together.

in Anna Nagar are
earmarking the road
margins in front of
their shops as private
parking lots for their
customers. They
employ guards who do
not allow other
vehicles to park in the spots even if they are empty. They include
leading hotels, restaurants, vegetable marts and supermarkets on
2nd Avenue, 3rd Avenue, 5th Avenue and Shanthi Colony. The traffic
department and other enforcement officials remain mute spectators.
I appeal to the higher authorities to take stern action against such
misuse of public space by private shop owners. I also request the

EB structures block pavements
Sir, I am a 75 and in good health. I am a foot soldier and am mostly
forced to walk on the road thanks to either the dilapidated condition
of the pavements/encroachments or a combination of both. However
recently, the incumbent government has taken steps to make the
pavements pedestrian friendly. A number of pavements have been
widened and efforts have taken to stop vendors or shopkeepers from
encroaching the space. However one lacunae still remains which is
location of huge TNEB structures on the pavements. The transformers,
junction boxes, cables and other equipment block the pavement for
long stretches forcing pedestrians to walk on the road. Since the
structures are essential and cannot be relocated to the road, I suggest
that they be installed in a slightly elevated platform so that they do
not block the pavement. I appeal to the TNEB officials to consider the
viability of the suggestion for the benefit of pedestrians.—R.

Resident yet to receive LPG subsidy credit
Sir, As directed by the Central Government, I have completed all
formalities to avail domestic cylinder (LPG) gas subsidy. But till date
no amount, as subsidy, has been credited to my bank account. When
contacted, the bank authorities said that the amount will be automatically credited and further affirmed that they are in the process
of doing so. When I contacted the gas agencies, they said they have no
idea. I therefore appeal to the concerned authorities to give a clear

Remove problematic garbage bin fence
Sir, Chennai Corporation has erected blue fenced garbage enclosures
everywhere, but in our Imayam Colony, the Corporation officials
themselves have locked the enclosure since the garbage collectors are
not willing to remove the garbage bins from the enclosure to transfer
the garbage to the lorry. Therefore the bins are kept outside the
enclosure. All the nearby residents are dumping the garbage only here
and every day it overflows and occupies the full road. Now the garbage
bin is on one side and on another side they are dumping the garbage
on road. We need to get the garbage fence removed from here and retain

Transformers, EB equipment
on 5th Avenue upgraded
The two large and old transformers erected on the pillars at the
junction of 5th Avenue and AD Block 5th Street, Anna Nagar, were
replaced with new compact sized transformers on Feb. 12. Also the
grid control equipment and the fuse junction boxes were replaced with
a single ring main unit (RMU). The power supply was cut to AD and
AE Blocks from 10 a.m to facilitate the work. The power was restored
by 7 p.m after the work got completed.
An official said that the single RMU is compact and safe and has
the capacity to control two transformers. The efficiency of the
distribution network gets improved thereby minimizing transformer
faults. The RMU on becoming operational will be linked to the
Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) centre so that
its operation can be regularly monitored. When there is a surge, the
RMU will automatically trip, and will have to be reset. This would
make it safer than current systems, the official added.

S. Gopalakrishnan (resident of 172, Park Road,
Anna Nagar Western Extension) passed away on
Feb. 6.
He was 74 and had been a resident of Anna Nagar
for more than 2 years.
He had retired from Bank of India. He is survived
by 2 sons, 2 daughters and grandchildren.

Sketch trail is an interactive tool to understand a locality or a space though sketches.
This trail will start at Tower Park and end near
Round Tana. Volunteers of the organization
will take the participants to renowned restaurants to taste their items.
