Festival
CMOR will host its 17th annual International Festival on
Saturday, February 21, 2014 from 10 AM to 4 PM. Come
and enjoy entertainment, culture, crafts, and food for the
whole family from around the world!
Featured Cultures in the International Bazaar:
Appalachia, Belgium, China, Cuba, Dominican Republic,
Egypt, Germany, Greece, Guatemala, Haiti, Hong Kong,
India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Norway, Scotland,
Singapore, Spain, Turkey, Ukraine, Venezuela, Vietnam
Food available in the Gym and Gym Lobby includes
offerings from China, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Egypt,
Greece, India, Italy, Japan, Jordan, Mexico, Norway,
Poland, Ukraine, Venezuela
Crafts for Kids – Children will have the opportunity to
create a Chinese Dragon, a Japanese Geisha Mask, and an
Indian Elephant.
A World of Trains: Milton Lloyd Exhibit, West Wing.
Displays and demonstrations – the Train Garden will be
open, weather permitting.

HAND BUILDING AND WHEEL THROWING
Participants are exposed to a wide variety of methods for creating
both functional as well as sculptural clay pieces. All levels are
welcome. Intermediate and more advanced students will learn
new techniques and improve skills through the use of the potter's
wheel and various hand building methods. Surface decoration
and glazing techniques will also be explored.

Capture the sun’s rays and turn it into usable energy. Children

using ordinary materials. Children will compare air temperature
inside their solar oven, to the temperature of the environment. All
equipment will be provided including the ingredients for “Solar
S’Mores.”
Objectives:
• Children will work in teams to design and construct a solar
oven and will make predictions about how their solar oven will
work.
• Children will convert natural energy into useful energy.

becoming a steward of their home, the Environmental Center. So
come on along and “go green” with the Children’s Museum of

Our policy for registration :
Payment in full is required to register your child for
a camp/class/workshop. Camp/class/workshop fees
are fully refundable until fourteen days before the
start date. Refunds will not be given for absences or
"no-shows." We reserve the right to cancel a class
due to low enrollment. Fees for classes cancelled by
the museum will be fully refundable.
Winter snow policy:
Our winter snow policy follows that of the Oak Ridge
School System: if Oak Ridge schools are closed for a
snow emergency, the museum is closed and classes
are cancelled. If museum classes are cancelled due to
inclement weather, they will be made up or
rescheduled. The safety of our visitors is our
primary concern.
Marc DeRose, new ORCVB president,
to Speak at Volunteer Awards
Ceremony
The Volunteer Awards Ceremony will be on Thursday.
March 26th, at 7 PM, followed by our Annual Meeting.
Our guest speaker will be Marc DeRose. Music will be
provided by Early Bird Special.
Marc DeRose was elected as the new president of the Oak
Ridge Convention and Visitors Bureau in September 2014.
Mr. DeRose is the former Director of Rowing for the Oak
Ridge Rowing Association and currently serves as a coach
for All American Rowing Camps. He has also coached
rowing at the University of Central Florida, Columbia
University, the University of Massachusetts, and the
University of Miami. He has been a rowing coach at the
junior, NCAA, national, and international levels for fifteen
years.
Mr. DeRose is originally from Sault Ste. Marie in Canada.
He has a BS in biology from Trent University and an MS in
biology from McGill University, both in Canada. He is
married and has two daughters. His hobbies include travel
and hockey, and his ambition is to learn to fly airplanes.
Dr. Bill Miller, Senior Research Engineer at ORNL, and
mechanical engineering students from UT gave a
presentation on green living and the Living Light Solar
House at the Children’s Museum on November 20, 2014.
Students were able to explore the solar house and learn
about types of renewable energy and how it impacts their
future.
Students have been preparing for the International Festival.
Guest speakers Thomas Sauer and Mike Hickman, teacher
sponsors for the ORHS International Club, and students
from Oak Ridge High School – Grace Malone, Daniel
Malagon, and Gabriel Vaculiac - shared their knowledge of
countries and cultures around the world at the YAC
meeting on December 18, 2014. The students voted for
China as the country they will represent for the
International Festival. They have researched natural
history, geography, climate, food, agriculture, government
and economy, art, music, literature, and religion. They have
been busy preparing spring rolls and chicken stir-fry as a
part of their booth at the International Festival.
Guest speaker Wenting Pi from the Confucius Institute at
UT shared Chinese culture and traditions with the students
on January 22, 2015. Students also prepared posters and
delicious cuisine representing China.
Celebration for the Young Child
Children’s Museum of Oak Ridge will be presenting
Celebration for the Young Child on Friday, April 17, 2015,
from 10 AM – 1 PM. There will be special entertainment,
crafts, stories, fitness activities, and more!
Museum exhibits will be open: TVA Waterworks, Puppet
Room, Dollhouse, the Rainforest, the World of Trains, the
Appalachian exhibit and other favorites.
After School Club

Students from Glenwood, Linden, and Willow Brook have
been busy learning about healthy living. Presenter Abbie
Cary from UT Extension Office of Family and Consumer
Science shared two programs: “Eat a Rainbow” and “All
About Pumpkins.” Karen Savino from Tennessee
Consumer Education Program will be teaching “Kitchen
Science” this spring. Other programs include UT “House of
Math” and 4-H leadership programs.

Oak Ridge Preschool Program

Children from the Oak Ridge Schools’ Preschool are
participating in exploring museum exhibits with special
guest speakers, experiencing hands-on learning in the
museum’s Environmental Learning Center and Gardens,
and enjoying creative art, puppetry and music. They are
also participating in creative movement, working in
cooperative learning centers, and discovering a world of
multi-cultural learning. These programs provide activities
that will build self-esteem, enhance skill building activities,
and promote an appreciation of cultural differences.

New Preschool teacher Joy Arehart (photo by Mollie Flynn)
Our new teacher this January is Joy Arehart. Joy brings a
wealth of experience to the program. She has a Bachelor of
Science from the University of Tennessee and an MS from
Tennessee Tech, and she is certified by the University of
Tennessee in special education. Joy has taught in special
education at all levels and has 28 years of experience at the
preschool level.
Girl Scouts Act as Docents

In celebration of the birthday of Juliette Gordon Low, the
founder of Girl Scouting in the United States, Cadette
Troop 21048 became docents for a day at the Girl Scout
exhibit. The girls were available to answer questions about
the founding of Girl Scouting in the U.S. and in Oak Ridge
and to discuss the significance of the exhibit and the
artifacts it contains.

The Kids in Action! mascot, Peppy
Pepper, is ready to start helping
children and their families learn
about healthy lifestyles. Kids in
Action! is a sister program to Kids
Go Green! and will have its own
exhibit and supporting programs
that include in-house classes, day
camps, museum after-school programs, outreach programs
to area schools, and teacher workshops. In addition there
will be a Kids in Action! traveling trunk that will be
available for outreach programs and classroom use.

Lorraine Bowen already are developing this resource, and
plans are underway for programs and events for local
schools. Layout and construction of the exciting new
exhibit has begun, too. Check on Twitter and Facebook for

Kids in Action! is being funded through a generous grant
from the Institute of Museum and Library Services and
through private donations.

Children’s Museum of Oak Ridge celebrated one of the
major cultural influences of our region with its gala, ‘A
Celtic Holiday,” at the museum on Friday, December 5,
2014. The food, music, art, and dance of the Scots and Irish
were featured throughout the evening. The splendid hors
d’oeuvres and dinner were catered by the Scottish Cottage
from Asheville, NC. Entertainment was provided by the
ORHS string quartet, the ORHS chorus, Celtic harpist
Becky Hook, the Good Thymes Ceilidh Band and the
Knoxville Pipes and Drums. Dancer Katelyn Fraker
performed traditional Highland dances. This fundraising
event supports our educational programs and exhibits,
including our After School Program for at-risk children,
our outreach programs, and scholarships for classes and
camps. CMOR began as an answer to the needs of the
community, and it continues to be our goal to provide
valuable services and enrichment for the children and
families of our region. The staff, volunteers, board of
trustees, and the gala host committee are grateful for our
guests. Their contributions to the annual fund drive
Kids Go Green! News
Kids Go Green! is an educational program
dedicated to the idea that the backyard is
the ecological center of communities and lives.
Understanding the link between personal actions and nature
is the key to improving the ecological world. Through the
Kids Go Green! Environmental Center and Gardens,
CMOR encourages healthy habits by developing young
minds, bodies, and spirits through eco-action, healthy
eating, and exercise. While teaching the path of farm to
fork, Children’s Museum instills healthy living habits in
children that can be incorporated during childhood and
maintained throughout life.
This past summer we welcomed our Master Gardener
intern, Amy Potter, who worked with us throughout the
autumn. The Kids Go Green! Club, Wednesday Academy,
the After School Club, and the Youth Advisory Council al
have ongoing garden projects. We worked on wildlife
gardens with Roane County extension agent Grant Palmer
and with Dr. Bill Miller of UT began planning a permanent
interpretive program on thermal solar systems called Fire
and Ice.

KIDS GO GREEN! GARDENERS’ CLUB: “MY FIRST
GARDEN”
Learn the science of a garden and how to care for and plant the
plants you love the most! And then eat the garden’s bounty! Visit
the wildlife in the garden and become their friends while
becoming a steward of their home, the Environmental Center. So
come on along and “go green” with the Children’s Museum of
Oak Ridge.
Dates: 1st week in May 2015 (May 4 – 8) and 1st week in
August 2015 (August 3 – 7)
Deadline to register: Two weeks before date
Time: 9:00 AM – 11:45 AM
Fee: $ 12.00 per person per day for 5 days or $55.00 per week
per person.
Limit: 8 children and 4 adults (adult parents or leaders)

FAMILY 3K WILDFLOWER HIKE ON THE
NORTHRIDGE TRAIL
Learn how plant and animal worlds depend upon and relate to
each other, see animals in their natural habitat, hike the North
Ridge Trail, learn to identify plants and trees, and much more!
Bring a sack lunch and a drink.
Date: Saturday, March 21, 2015

GIRL SCOUT GARDENING GURUS
Join Bucky Smith, master gardener, and learn how to landscape
your own dream garden using your favorite plants, patterns,
shapes and color(s). Bring an empty egg carton to plant seeds for
an experiment with water and sunlight. Bring a digital camera to
take shots of your favorite plants in the Kids Go Green!
Environmental Center and Gardens. Learn how to create a
container garden.

This exhibit is a wonderful selection of favorite images
from Ray Smith’s archives of nature photographs. His
images depict wildflowers, trees, rivers and streams from
various East Tennessee locations including the UT
Arboretum and Frozen Head State Park.
D. RAY SMITH
D. Ray Smith is well known to most Oak Ridgers. He is
the Historian at the Y-12 Security Complex, a journalist for
the Oak Ridger newspaper and he also serves on a number
of boards of directors for local non-profit organizations.
Ray has lived in Oak Ridge for 44 years with his wife
Fanny. They have two sons and five grandchildren. Ray is
often found at community events taking photos that he
generously shares with the public.
Ray has co-produced several award-winning documentary
films, publishes two weekly Oak Ridge history newspaper
columns, “Historically Speaking” and “Y-12: Local
Treasure and National Resource,” and he has published 10
books on the history of Oak Ridge. He has won numerous
awards for his work.
Mollie Flynn
Apart from his history projects and community service,
Ray has always had a love of nature and nature
photography. He began his photography career while
serving in the U.S. Air Force in Vietnam where he
purchased his first quality camera, a Canon FTb.
Ray has partnered with Harvey Towns of the Appalachian
Frame Shop to produce this 40-piece exhibit. Prints of
these images may be ordered from the Appalachian Frame
Shop.

Special Volume donated to CMOR
Joyce Maienschein, the eponymous troop leader honored
by our Girl Scouting exhibit, has donated a copy of “These
Are Our Voices: The Story of Oak Ridge, 1942-1970”
signed by twenty of the authors whose essays are included.
This book was commissioned by Children’s Museum of
Oak Ridge and was edited by Jim Overholt in the late
1980s. This special autographed volume was sold online to
a friend of Joyce’s daughter Jane and then made its way to
Joyce. We are very grateful that Joyce sent the volume on
to us.
The book will be put on display at the museum. In the
meantime, people interested in viewing the book may
contact Margaret Allard at (865) 482-1074.
Nonautographed copies of “These Are Our Voices” are
available in our museum store and on our website.

Dear Friends,
In 2014, Children’s Museum was busy transforming, building, growing,
and exploring. We continually seek to embrace new possibilities as we
move forward with our mission to enrich, inspire, and improve the lives
of children in East Tennessee.
Executive Director
Mary Ann Damos
CMOR is transforming its exhibit spaces to include the beloved Rocket
Room, which is nearing completion. This has been a wonderful
cooperative effort between Y-12, the NASA Space Center in Huntsville,
Knoxville Area Model Railroaders, and many volunteers. The
transformed exhibit will soon be renamed the Mars Rocket Room and will
feature a refurbished rocket, a model of the Space Shuttle, an Apollo
Rocket model, a hands-on Mars land rover, a tunnel, and a climbing area.
The exhibit will open up many possibilities for STEAM (Science,
Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) classes, workshops, and summer
camps.
Board of Trustees
In September of 2014 the museum received a grant from the Institute for
Museum and Library Services for a Kids in Action! Healthy Living
Initiative. This will include building a healthy living exhibit, offering fun
healthy living educational programs as well as presenting engaging
outreach programs centered on Kids in Action! Discovery Cases. This
new initiative will build on existing healthy living programs at the
museum and work cooperatively with its “sister” exhibit, Kids Go Green!
Environmental Center and Gardens. These programs/exhibits target the
rising challenge of childhood obesity and accompanying serious health
problems. The Kids in Action! exhibit will offer an area for exercise as
well as a section to learn about healthy nutrition. These exhibits and
programs will be a great example of the museum’s theme of “learning
through play.”
The museum’s attendance continues to grow, enabling CMOR to offer
valuable hands-on learning experiences to kids from many areas
throughout East Tennessee. We continue to explore new ways to serve the
community and its families. So we are always interested in hearing what
your interests are and value any suggestions that you might have for us.
Please keep in touch and visit the museum often! Explore our new and
established exhibits where there is always something for the whole
family!
