WORD FROM THE PRINCIPAL
STUDENT RESOURCE SCHEME
I would like to thank staff and students for their
efforts in creating such a smooth transition into the
2015 school year. The Year 7s and 8s must be
commended for their start to High School life here
at “the Pine”.
Their enthusiasm and energy
displayed at last week’s swimming carnival was
fantastic.
I urge all parents to attend the relevant
information evenings coming up during the
next week. It sends a very positive message to
your children when they see you take the time to
come and participate at these evenings. It clearly
shows you care about their education and how you
are willing to prioritise in your busy schedules the
need to attend these events.
The most common question I have received from
parents pertains to our Student Resource
Scheme (SRS).
Particularly from parents who
have children entering high school for the first time.
Student Resource Schemes are available in High
Schools to reduce the costs of the education
programs for your family.
Without them most
families will be incurring costs significantly greater
than the annual cost to join the scheme. It is often
misunderstood that the Resource Scheme is only
about textbooks. This may have been the case 20
years ago, however, in this digital age the
resources accessed by students covers a great deal
more than just take-home textbooks.
Our current scheme is $220 per year. This fee
covers:1. Photocopying, paper, toners and machine
maintenance
2. Computer Software, site license agreements
and technical support
3. Take-home textbook hire
4. In class reference books
5. Consumable costs in practical subjects.
Members of the scheme can also access payment
plans with the school. These plans are usually 6
month in duration and must be completed by the
September holidays. Non-members or un-financial
members of the scheme will not have access to
payment
schemes.
Therefore
activities
like
excursions, sports or camps will require full
payment prior to the event.
Participation in the scheme is voluntary. To join the
scheme the appropriate paperwork must be
completed and signed each year. Families with
outstanding debt will not have access to the
scheme until this debt is cleared.
•
Non-members will not have access to the
resources of the scheme.
Non-member families will be required to
purchase all texts, including those used as
reference books in class.
•
Non-member families will need Individual
copies of software programs used in various
subjects.
•
A photocopy levy will be required to pay for
the handouts.
•
More importantly a consumable levy for
various elective subjects like Manual Arts,
Home Economics, Art and Media will require
payment in full before a child can commence
that subject.
The actual requirements for your child’s
program of study will be provided if you have
not joined the scheme.
It is often misunderstood by families that public
education is free. It is only the wages of staff and
facilities that is provided as free under the Act.
I can:•
assure families the cost of our scheme is one of
the cheapest in this district.
•
also assure families the resources listed above
are paid for by this scheme.
•
also assure participating members of the
scheme your resources will not be provided for
free to families who choose not to join.
Families with genuine issues regarding their current
finances are urged to contact the school and have a
confidential conversation with either the Business
Services Manager or the Principal.
Regards
John Schuh

PAST MUSIC STUDENT GUEST AT
ACADEMIC ASSEMBLY
Last Friday we held our Year 10 and 11 (2014)
Semester 2 Academic Assembly, which has been
the tradition to hold over at the end of each year so
that Year 10 and 11 students do not have to return
to school until the new year.
We were joined by Jodie O’Brien, graduating
student of 2012, as our Guest. Since leaving “the
Pine”, Jodie has returned each year to play in the
Alumni Band for our musicals, as well as performing
with our students at other times. On leaving school
Jodie was awarded the Sir Samuel Griffith
scholarship. She is currently in her final year of a
Bachelor of Music (Jazz Saxophone) at the
Queensland Conservatorium of Music at Griffith
University.
In her speech to students, Jodie told students,
“Throughout the challenging moments, the most
important thing to remember is to not give up –
when obstacles and set-backs get in our way, we
should not be asking ourselves ‘why has this
happened’ but asking ‘what new opportunities
1
will this create’. We need to learn from our
failures and use them to better ourselves, one small
step at a time.” Jodie referred to one of Martin
Luther King III’s speeches, where he emphasised
the importance of education, stating that “The
future belongs to those who are educated and
prepared to meet the challenges and opportunities
of tomorrow.” We thank Jodie for her inspiring
words.
We were also joined at the assembly by our new
State Member (elect) for Pine Rivers, Nikki Boyd,
who assisted with presentation of awards, including
the State Parliamentarian Awards for semester two.

SWIMMING CARNIVAL 2015 HIGHLY
CONTESTED
Overall Result
Pine Panthers :Rivers Rhinos :-
2440 Points
2046 Points
On Tuesday 3 February we held our Annual
Swimming Carnival.
This year we held the
carnival over one day instead of two with the
Junior students swimming during the school day,
followed by the Senior students swimming
between 3:00pm and 6:00pm.
Once again it was another hotly contested
carnival. This year the Rivers Rhinos won the
Junior Carnival by a narrow margin of 18 points.
The Pine Panthers came back with the support of
a number of strong swimmers in the older age
groups to win the Senior Carnival and the overall
result.

Two of our students, Matthew Avery and Nicky
McKay competed in the National Open Water
Championships in Freemantle over the weekend.
Matthew competed in the 10k and 5k swims, while
Nicky competed in the 5k.
They were joined by past students, Paralympian
Brenden Hall, and Marcus Hall. At the time of
printing of our newsletter we were waiting to hear
how they swam.
MATHEMATICS TUTORING
In addition to the small group tutoring offered by
Maths teachers before and after school, we have
tutors available to assist students who require oneon-one help. The tutors are former Pine Rivers
State High School students who are willing and
eager to help students achieve their personal best.
Classrooms are made available for these one hour
tutorial sessions before and/or after school as
required. There is a fee for each session which is
negotiated between parents/caregivers and the
tutor.
If you think your son or daughter would benefit
from having a tutor, please contact Mr Dave Walsh
in the Mathematics Faculty at [email protected]
or phone 3881 4747. Tutors are able to assist
students in all year levels.

students with the UMAT process. In particular, they
workshop test taking and interview preparation
strategies. While there is no compulsion for
students to enrol in this program, it is an option for
those who want to gain some experience of the
whole process. For more information, please see

P&C NEWS
At the end of last year the P&C Committee had the
unfortunate task of having to close down the Pine
Rivers State High School Community Education
Program.
This program offered affordable and
diverse courses to our local community for over 30
years with funds raised going back to the school to
provide additional facilities and resources to our
students. Due to a significant decline in student
enrolments and despite great efforts throughout
2014 to revise marketing strategies and promote
the new website in a bid to reduce ongoing
overheads and target a wider audience, a motion
was passed at the final meeting in 2014 for the
program to cease operating. A huge thank you to
Jenny Woolsey, who as the Coordinator in 2014,
dedicated enormous amounts of time and effort
above and beyond what was expected in an
attempt to revitalise the program. Many thanks
also to Jenny’s family who we know were of great
support, to our current P&C President Randall Fall,
for his determination to give the program its best
shot and for working in partnership with Jenny to
do what was necessary, to all the tutors for their
loyalty and service, and finally to the past
Coordinators for their support and commitment to
the program and the school.
Our next meeting is on Wednesday 25
February at 7:00pm in the Staff Common Room
(Admin building, off Ash Court) and our AGM will
be on 25 March.
Please come along, new
members needed.

SNOW TRIP NEWS
Instrumental Music students began the new school
year with a series of music workshops across
strings, woodwind, brass and percussion. The focus
of these workshops was music making and
teamwork from beginning to continuing students.
It was well attended and provided an excellent
opportunity for the new students, our Year 7s and
Year 8s, to enter the music program and get to
know other students. Conductors, Mr Barrie Gott,
Mr Bruce Hamlin and Ms Leanne Cahill led students
through a diverse repertoire designed to enhance
the musicianship skills of our brass, woodwind,
strings and percussion students. They were ably
assisted by the Music captains, Emily Schofield and
Cassandra Kachel (Stage Band Captains), Louise
Fuller and Hannah Cassell (Concert Band Captains),
Loren Benvenuti and Madison Tarnawsky (String
Ensemble Captains), Section Leaders, Christopher
Whittaker (percussion), Henry Jarvela and Courtney
Houston (strings). Congratulations to our Music
Captains and Section Leaders.
The year promises to be an exciting one for
Instrumental Music. Congratulations to Mr Gott, Mr
Hamlin and Ms Cahill for all their efforts in providing
such a professional musical experience for our
students.
Planning for the trip is well under way and nearly
40 students have already expressed an interest in
attending.
Thank you to those parents and
caregivers who came to our first meeting on
Monday 9 February to find out more about the trip.
Please feel free to get in touch if you were unable
to attend or have further questions. A second
meeting will be held early next term to give you
more specific information about the trip.
Interested students should have received a note to
explain payment of the first $400 deposit, and
outline when further payments will be due. Once
this first payment is made, a check will be carried
out to ensure all students attending have a record
of safe and responsible behaviour. Once this is
completed and your student is accepted on the trip,
these deposits will be forwarded on to secure
5
accommodation and transport. This means your
deposit becomes non-refundable after Monday 9
March, if you change your mind.
Students should also have received a Permission
Note and Behaviour Contract which needs to be
signed by both you and your son or daughter.
Optional insurance is also available through QBE
and application forms are available for your student
to collect from the Science staffroom.
Full details of the trip can be found on the school
website under “Events”
lar/Campsandexcursions/Pages/Snowtrip.aspx).
If your son or daughter needs these forms, they
can be collected from and returned to Ms
Handfield in the Science staffroom. If she is not
there, notes can be placed in the Snow Trip box
outside the staffroom door. If you would prefer to
contact her, please call on phone 3881 4756 or
email [email protected].
