Digital 1/3 Octave Analyzer Brochure - AV-iQ

DIGITAL 30 CHANNEL 1/3 OCTAVE ANALYZERS
The GOLD LINE DSP ANALYZERS have digital features that greatly increase the usefulness and cost
effectiveness of audio measurements. These analyzers feature a SOUND WINDOW that is large enough to
capture the dynamic response of a room (85dB) and are capable of detailed measurements with great
accuracy.
The analyzer makes use of software-controlled filters allowing
measurements over a wider dynamic range without interference
from adjacent frequencies. The user is also able to change the
character of the filters from standard ANSI CLASS III triple
tuned filters to filters with sharper skirts (better than CLASS III).
These sharper filters allow the user to measure over a larger
dynamic range without interference from adjoining frequencies.
The DSP30 only weighs 3 ¼ lb. including its batteries and
microphone. The handle adjusts to serve as a stand. The LEDs
are very bright and easy to read. The digital readout is also
bright and the numerals are large enough to see from reasonable
distances. The unit has a built-in line input so external adapters
and attenuators are not necessary to make line level

measurements.
There are several things about the
operation of the DSP that are unique and
very convenient. First, the configuration
of the unit at turn on can be
predetermined by the operator. This
means that when you turn it on it will
come up with the filters, scaling, etc. that
you prefer as an operator. The unit has an
auto-scaling mode which always keeps
MODEL DSP30RM
the highest 1/3 octave band reading at the
top of the scale each time the LED readout is refreshed. This means that the maximum amount of
information is always on scale rather than being hidden off scale. The weighting can be set for A, C, user
definable weighting or FLAT. The level steps per LED in the display can be set to one of 7 different ranges
going from .25 dB to 5 dB per step. You can see the display in peak or average and there is a peak hold
mode which is equivalent to some manufacturers accumulate mode.
Data held in memory can be summed or subtracted from memory to memory for easy comparisons between
measurements. The memories hold the entire 85 dB worth of level data. The memories are not limited to
what is shown in the display window at any
given time. There is an automatic summing
mode available. In this mode, the unit
continuously takes new readings, sums them to
the total of all the previous readings, and
presents an average on the screen. Note that this
is an entirely different concept than the peak
hold function described above.
Also available are models DSP30RM rack
mount, DSPCIW black box for computer
interface only, DSP30B with Intelligibility
software, STI-PA CD and carry case and
DSP30BP, with added Privacy Index software.

BRIEF DISCUSSION OF INTELLIGIBILITY AND PRIVACY MEASUREMENTS
Speech Intelligibility and Privacy can be measured.
In addition to its capabilities as a full-featured audio spectrum analyzer, the DSP30BP now adds the ability
to accurately measure:
*The Intelligibility Of Voice Enunciator and Evacuation Systems.
*The Privacy Of Speech.
Speech intelligibility is the degree to which we understand spoken language. Speech is not necessarily
intelligible simply because it is audible. Everyone has experienced speech signals that are loud enough but
overly reverberant, suffer from echoes or distortion and therefore are not understandable. Announcements
in airports, train stations and places of worship are often examples of this problem. Conversely, speech
privacy is a measurement to determine when speech is sufficiently blocked or masked so that people cannot
understand the content. Privacy of speech is of concern in many Governmental, Business and Medical
environments.
Increasingly Codes and liability law are compelling modern consultants, contractors and AHJ's to find a
way to verify that Voice Evacuation and Sound Masking systems actually perform as intended. The
National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has taken the important step of requiring intelligibility in
every voice alarm system. Thus a code-based mechanism now exists ensuring that when a voice alarm
system is used, we can be certain that its effectiveness will not be compromised because of poor speech
intelligibility. See Appendix to NFPA 72. And, the new HIPAA standards for Patient Information privacy
is driving the trend towards Privacy Index measurements as the best method for assuring that masking
systems are in fact providing adequate levels of privacy.
The DSP30BP analyzer package offers the ability to conduct both Intelligibilty and Privacy measurements.
Based on test tones developed by TNO Human Factors Laboratory, the system meets or exceeds
International Standards ref: ISO 9921, IEC 60268-16, 60849 and ANSI S3.05.
