What is this book?
If you should decide to buy any of the items from this catalogue, who will it support? In 2016
Lewisham District which is in the borough of Lewisham will be taking a party of leaders,
Network Scouts, & Explorer Scouts, for two weeks to Kenya.
For this to happen we need to raise over £40,000 and we are selling
ornaments hand-crafted in Kenya, which will help us to raise the
money to go, and help people in Kenya by providing them with an
outlet for their crafts. After taking into account the shipping of the
ornaments all profits will be used at a safe house in Kissi, things like
fencing, water butts and guttering and activity’s for the kids.
The safe house / school – Street Kids Appeal
In 2009 a party form Lewisham went out to
Kenya to help a charity (Harambee) in the
setting up of a safe house for about 40 kids that
were living on the streets. While there we
helped plant flower, we built a chicken house,
so they would have fresh eggs to eat or sell in
the local market.
The house has a school room upstairs which can
be hired out for local meeting for organisations
like Africa 2000.
Numbers in the house keep are growing so the
plan is to purchase an adjacent piece of land. The plan would be to build a workshop and teach
the older boys a skill so they can leave the house and be able to get a job.
In 2012 a party from Lewisham went over to
Kenya and ran a scout camp for 4 day before
returning to the house to do some repairs.

Ethical Policy
The products have been obtained through a Ethical Buying Policy, which includes:
 Trading fairly by paying our Crafts People on a piece rate basis.
 Paying a fair price for the crafts we purchase.
 Making payments when we purchase the crafts and not after we have sold them.
 Educating the Craft People on better ways to produce the beautiful crafts e.g. using all
raw materials to allow maximum usage.
 Encouraging the use of sustainable raw materials by using waste woods where possible.
The use of “good wood” such as Jacaranda is also being promoted and encouraged.
Jacaranda grows much faster than the usual hard woods that the crafts people are used to.
This requires a different carving technique, which we are encouraging the craft people to
learn. At the same time we are still paying the craft people the same amount per item as
products made from hard woods such as Mahogany and Yellow Woods.
Due to the handmade nature of our crafts dimensions

It is normal for dimensions to vary as the crafts-people try to
make the best use of a piece of stone or wood to hand craft an
item to the required shape and size with minimal wastage.
Many of the inks and dyes used are from natural resources and
will fade over time. This is normal and contributes to the
beauty of the artefacts as it ages over time
Care of Stone Artefacts
Spray a non-wax furniture polish onto a new soft cloth.
Never spray the polish directly onto the artefact. Gently rub the artefact with this cloth. Wipe the
artefact with a new soft cloth. If you have never cleaned the artefact and are unsure of how to do
so please seek the advice of a professional collector or gallery prior to cleaning.
DO NOT PUT WATER OR DETERGENTS ON YOUR ARTICLES
DO NOT LEAVE YOUR ARTICLES IN A HOT AREA OR IN A CONSERVATORY ON A HOT
DAY
Care of Wooden Artefacts
Place the artefact in an area which will offer it some humidity. Always use a soft cloth to gently
wipe your artefact. A good quality lemon oil may be used to gently rub down your artefact.
Always test the lemon oil on an obscure area and observe its effects over a number of days. Only
if you are certain that the oil is not damaging the artefact should you use it over the entire
artefact.
We will try and fill all order, but some things are in limited supply
