TECHNICAL PROGRAM: (PLEASE SEE SECTION V FOR REGISTRATION FEES)
Technical Class – Sunday, April 26 (Optional, maximum of 90 people)
“Salt Geology” (NOTE: the same subject will be repeated for the Fall 2015 SMRI Conference in
Santander, Spain)
SMRI’s Rochester technical class, “Salt Geology” will provide introductory, basic information about geology of
salt deposits. Participants will learn the basics of both bedded and domal formations, including commonly
associated non-halite salts and non-evaporitic materials. This class will address rock salt properties that are
relevant for mining and cavern development. The class will include carefully selected cases from the field, and a
hands-on session displaying a carefully selected set of relevant rock materials.
The class instructors and schedule will allow plenty of time for questions. Class participants each receive a
Technical Class Book and CR-rom of all the presentations. Advance registration is required. Class participants
must also be registered for the Conference. An outline of the class schedule and presentations follows in
section X of this announcement. For more information, you may contact the Technical Class Chair, Fritz Wilke,
phone +49 4403 9322-15, or e-mail [email protected]

Oral Research Report presentation – Monday 27 April at 10:00 AM:
RR2015-01 ESK GmbH/RWE, “Renewable Energy Storage in Salt Caverns – Behavior Comparison of Methane, Hydrogen and Air in Rock Salt.”
The transition from fossil and nuclear energy to renewable energy (wind, solar, …) will require large capacity
storages. Attractive storage alternatives are CAES and hydrogen storage in salt caverns. SMRI research such as
this may help lay the groundwork for such energy storage projects. This research project was completed on
schedule in late 2014, and the results may be of great value to those considering related salt cavern use. The
principal results will be presented at the start of the Rochester conference and the complete report will be available as a pdf version, online to members about 1 month after the conference. The report will later be available for
purchase by non-members starting in May 2016, after a 1 year member review period.
Technical papers – Monday 27 and Tuesday 28 April- A tentative list of papers and authors appears on
the last 2 pages of this announcement, and is posted on the website. Any revised version of the technical paper
list will be posted on the web site as soon as available, but will be subject to change. For more technical program
information, please contact either person:
