20 Edition 163 February 13, 2015 Positive Community News, Events & Advertisements Cynthiana, Paris & Georgetown, Ky. The City Buzz Magazine 2 Fun Presidential Facts BARACK OBAMA is our 44th president, but there actually have only been 43 presidents: Cleveland was elected for 2 nonconsecutive terms & is counted twice, as our 22nd & 24th. EIGHT PRESIDENTS were born British subjects: Washington, J. Adams, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, J. Q. Adams, Jackson, & W. Harrison. EIGHT PRESIDENTS never attended college: Washington, Jackson, Van Buren, Taylor, Fillmore, Lincoln, A. Johnson, & Cleveland. The college that has the most presidents as alumni (7 in total) is Harvard: J. Adams, J. Q. Adams, T. Roosevelt, F. Roosevelt, Rutherford B. Hayes, J. F. Kennedy, & George W. Bush. THE MOST COMMON religious affiliation among presidents has been Episcopalian, followed by Presbyterian. THE OLDEST president inaugurated was Reagan (age 69); the youngest was Kennedy (age 43). Theodore Roosevelt, however, was the youngest man to become president—— he was 42 when he succeeded McKinley, who had been assassinated. THE TALLEST president was Lincoln at 6'4"; at 5'4", Madison was the shortest. 14 PRESIDENTS served as vice presidents: J. Adams, Jefferson, Van Buren, Tyler, Fillmore, A. Johnson, Arthur, T. Roosevelt, Coolidge, Truman, Nixon, L. Johnson, Ford, & G. Bush. THE TERM "First Lady" was used first in 1849 when Pres. Zachary Taylor called Dolley Madison "First Lady" at her state funeral. It gained popularity in 1877 when used in reference to Lucy Ware Webb Hayes. Most First Ladies, including Jackie Kennedy, hated the label. JAMES BUCHANAN was the only pres. never to marry. 5 pres. remarried after the death of their first wives; 2 of whom, Tyler & Wilson, remarried while in the White House. Reagan was the only divorced pres. 6 presidents had no children. Tyler; father of 15, had the most. PRESIDENTS LINCOLN, Garfield, McKinley, & Kennedy were assassinated in office. ASSASSINATION ATTEMPTS were made on the lives of Jackson, T. Roosevelt, F. Roosevelt, Truman, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, G. H. W. Bush, Clinton, & G. W. Bush. EIGHT PRESIDENTS died in office: W. Harrison (after having served only one month), Taylor, Lincoln, Garfield, McKinley, Harding, F. Roosevelt, & Kennedy. PRES/ Adams, Jefferson, & Monroe died on the July 4; Coolidge was born on that day. KENNEDY & TAFT are the only presidents buried in Arlington National Cemetery. LINCOLN, JEFFERSON, F. Roosevelt, Washington, Kennedy, & Eisenhower are portrayed on U.S. coins. WASHINGTON, JEFFERSON, Lincoln, Jackson, Grant, McKinley, Cleveland, Madison, & Wilson are portrayed on U.S. paper currency. 19 The City Buzz Magazine 2015 edition dates: Jan 2 & 16 & 30 / Feb 13 & 27 / Mar 13 & 27 April 10 & 24 / May 8 & 22 / June 5 & 19 / July 3 & 17 & 31 Aug 14 & 28 / Sept 11 & 25 / Oct 9 & 23 / Nov 6 & 20 / Dec 4 & 18 ' ASK YOUR OWN LAWYER ' Notice; This column is not to be considered as any legal advice, always ask your own lawyer when you need legal advice. Question: I have a contract with my previous employer (a private company) that states when the company sells, someday, I get 5% of the sale price as my retirement package. They are now selling off a piece of the company (not a separate company, just a d.b.a. division) for $1,275,000. Am I entitled to receive the $ 63,750 or can they just keep selling off pieces without giving me anything? This company is worth around $ 7,500,000. I would hate for them to use this as a loophole to scam their way out of paying me what I am owed. I worked long hours for this company for over 25 years and this is a lot of money to me. What can I do? Answer: Without seeing the actual contract, it is impossible to answer your question correctly. Your attorney should review the contract; even if you have to pay for the consultation. This type of practice was used more commonly several years ago, however most people aren‟t offered this type of deferred retirement settlement. There is too much chance that you won‟t live long enough to collect. I suspect that your employer was aging and didn‟t want to offer you a retirement plan when he hired you, so he used this method to make the deal more attractive to you. Given the amount of money you stand to gain (or lose), it‟s a wise investment to hire a good contract attorney. I hope you come out OK, but for some reason, I suspect that you will have a hard time collecting. Mr. Tidbits Why Old Dogs Never Die A German Shepherd starts chasing rabbits and before long, discovers that he's lost. Wandering about, he notices a panther heading rapidly in his direction with the intention of having lunch. The old German Shepherd thinks, "Oh, no! I'm in deep dodo now!" Noticing some bones on the ground close by, he immediately settles down to chew on the bones with his back to the approaching cat. Just as the panther is about to leap, the old German Shepherd exclaims loudly, “Boy, that was one delicious panther! I wonder if there are any more around here." Hearing this, the young panther halts his attack in mid-strike, a look of terror comes over him and he slinks away into the trees. “Whew!" says the panther, "That was close! That old German Shepherd nearly had me!" Meanwhile, a squirrel who had been watching the whole scene from a nearby tree figures he can put this knowledge to good use and trade it for protection from the panther. So, off he goes to find the panther. He soon catches up with the big black cat, spills the beans and strikes a deal for himself with the panther. The young panther is furious at being made a fool of and says, "Here, squirrel, hop on my back and see what's going to happen to that conniving canine!" Now, the old German Shepherd sees the panther coming with the squirrel on his back and thinks, "What am I going to do now?" But instead of running, the dog sits down with his back to his attackers, pretending he hasn't seen them yet, and just when they get close enough to hear, the old German Shepherd says... "Where's that squirrel? I sent him off an hour ago to bring me another panther!" Moral of this story... Don't mess with old dogs. Age and skill will always overcome youth and treachery! Cunning and brilliance only come with age and experience. 16 5 Feb. 19 beginning of the Chinese New Year 2015 is the year of the Sheep/Goat/Ram & ends Feb. 19, 2016 The sheep (goat, or ram) is among the animals that people like most. It is gentle and calm. Since ancient times, people have learned to use its fleece to make writing brushes and skin to keep warm. As it is white, people describe delicate and precious white jade to be 'suet jade'. Thus it is close to the meaning of good things. Fortune Foretelling in 2015 It is their order to encounter the Year of Birth (Benming Nian), a year to offend “Taisui‟, the god in charge of people‟s fortune. In 2015, their fortune in all aspects will fluctuate. In career, there won‟t be a promotion or salary rise. Only if they stick with their current job and work hard, will they smoothly get through the year. In wealth, they should be very cautious about any investment, or there will be a loss. In relationships, they are suggested to be tolerant of their family, friends and colleagues to avoid any conflict. Career: They may encounter some road blocks in career in 2015, especially in March, June, September and December. In these months, their emotions will be fluctuant, so it is likely that they will argue with colleagues. In comparison, their fortune in career gets better in February, July and August. As long as they persist in working hard, they will gain much in the coming year. At any rate, no promotion will fall upon them in 2015. Wealth: The financial fortune of sheep people will be just so-so. They should reduce daily expenses, or it will be hard to make ends meet. It is not a good idea to lend money to others. The investment in stocks, bonds and real estate should be stopped. People who are living in a rental house should keep doing this. Don‟t buy a new house or move. Setting a fish tank in the west or north of the house may increase their fortune in wealth. Relationships: Sheep people can easily lose their temper in 2015. As a result, couples and lovers may argue. They should communicate with each other to solve the problem to avoid breaking up. Also this is not a good year to get married. Single males may get involved in a relationship, and females will still expect to get back their former love. Health: They should keep away from sharp tools and weapons such as knifes, swords, saws and scissors, because they may easily get injured this year. In daily life, they should play sports and avoid eating too much greasy food. Sheep born in 1943 and 1979 need to be careful in driving and doing sports, especially in June and December. Study: Sheep students will hardly be able to concentrate on study and they should adjust their emotions to focus. Some students‟ study may be affected by family problems, so parents should pay attention to their behavior and try to be attentive to their children. Moreover, children may get infected with illness, which could influence their study. The Cats won no doubt, 71-69, but blew a 13 point second half lead on an LSU 19-2 run. I am sure Coach Cal had a little indigestion after the game. Karl Towns was the difference as the rest of the team defense and shooting was sporadic. He had 12 pts., 13 rebounds, and 2 blocked shots. At right, Karl-Anthony Towns videobombs John Calipari as he's calling him out for being immature after hanging on the goal and getting a technical foul that opened the run for LSU. I believe he may be right…...Come on KAT Man. Next UP: # 1 Cats meet South Carolina On February 14, Kentucky will play the SC Gamecocks in Rupp Arena. Her career began in 1926 as a "commerce" teacher at the Roosevelt High School, Gary, IN. She moved to Chicago after receiving tenure & there met Col. John C. Robinson & Cornelius R. Coffey, both pioneer pilots & mechanics. Under their tutelage Willa was able to follow in the steps of her mentor, Bessie Coleman, & later organize the annual memorial fly-over of Bessie Coleman's grave. In 1937 Willa earned her pilot's license, making her the first African American woman to be licensed in the U.S. Two years later she married Cornelius Coffey, who would become one of the Tuskegee Airmen. She was also a founding member of the National Airmen Assoc. of America, the sole purpose of which was to lobby Congress for the racial integration of the U.S. Army Air Corps. In 1941, with her flying service & aviation credentials, the U.S. government named Willa as the federal coordinator of the Chicago unit of the Civil Air Patrol civilian pilot training program. She was ranked an officer in this first integrated unit. Her efforts were directly responsible for the creation of the renowned Tuskegee Airmen, which led to the integration of the U.S. military services in 1948. She was instrumental in training more than 200 students who went on to become Tuskegee pilots. (womeninaviation.com) In July, 2010, Gov. Steve Beshear joined local leaders to unveil a sign designating the entire I-75 corridor in KY as the „Tuskegee Airmen Memorial Trail‟—a 191-mile stretch of highway from the Ohio to TN borders. “The Tuskegee Airmen revolutionized modern military standards by flying beyond enemy lines & racial boundaries,” Gov. Beshear said. “These soldiers never let racism & bigotry ground their skill, heroism & patriotism. We honor their brave commitment to the safety & freedom of our nation.” The original group of Tuskegee Airmen included 11 Kentucky cadets. Willa Brown Chappell was inducted into the Aviation Hall of Fame for her native state of KY in 2003. 9 12 “This Old House is Still Standing” by Mary Riggs LeBus This Week: Scarlet Gate ~ Home of Lexington's James Lane Allen "Behind all that I have written lie the landscapes of a single neighborhood" - JLA James Lane Allen was born on December 21, 1849 in Lexington, KY. He was the 7th & youngest child of Richard & Helen Foster Allen. When young James was 2 years old, his family moved to a 20 acre farm which had been given to them by his grandfather. Located on Lane Allen Road, near the Gardenside area, the home remained in the Allen family throughout the majority of his life. Allen has been described as "Kentucky's first important novelist." After receiving his Master's degree from Transylvania, he pursued a teaching career in KY, Missouri, & West Virginia. After moving to New York, James embarked on a writing career whose published works include With Flute and Violin, The Blue Grass Region, John Gray, The Choir Invisible, & most notably, A Kentucky Cardinal where he described living at the farm. JLA's home on the farm known as Scarlet Gate dates to 1795. The original main block of the 2-story Federal house consists of 2 rooms on each floor. The foundation is stone & the roof is gabled, the rafters are numbered & joined by wooden pegs. JLA described his home place as a "brick house of the Virginia pattern." Additions were made by later owners; most notably by an Eastern horseman, Frederick Johnson who purchased the estate in 1900. By this time, the place had fallen into disrepair & needed dire improvements & restoration. Scarlet Gate was purchased by the John Scott Lansill family who remained here until 2011 when the home was sold to The Lexington School for $ 1.3 million dollars. The present day 12.6 acre property consists of the main house, a guest house, an apartment, & a stable. The adjoining Lexington School property & Scarlet Gate are separated by a small stream. The wooded site is a popular venue for the school children to visit & study nature. Charles Baldecchi, head master of the Lexington School, now resides here with his family. JLA died in New York in 1925, leaving his $ 12,000 estate to the City of Lexington for a fountain "to the city's children." At the northern end of Gratz Park, a young boy shows a young girl his sailboat as they sit atop a rock. This is part of the fountain, an everlasting gift to the city's children from JLA, a man who never married or had his own. 10 11
