Those not registered in St. Eugene Parish but interested in attending our Parish Elementary School should call the school office for more information or to be placed on our waiting list. WHY ASHES ON ASH WEDNESDAY? Why does the priest or deacon make the sign of the cross on our foreheads with a smudge of ashes on the first day of Lent? Since ancient times, ashes have been a symbol of sorrow. After burning wood in a fireplace, the householder is left with ashes that need to be cleaned up. Having ashes on our foreheads is a sign that we are feeling the sorrow and guilt of sin, that we need to set about the work of cleaning up, of ridding ourselves of the burden and sorrow of sin. Lent is a time to prepare for Easter, and we prepare best by feeling sorry for our sins and turning away from them. We resolve to sin no more and to be ready to celebrate the new life of Easter as a new person. Ashes are also a symbol of our own mortality. When Adam and Eve disobeyed, God told them they would have a life of toil and suffering. God also told them they will die: “…you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” During Lent we are asked to recall that death is our destiny and that Lent is the time to prepare for the new Easter life that Jesus brings. The ashes we receive on Ash Wednesday are made by burning the palm branches left over from last year’s Palm Sunday. Some oil is added to make the ashes stick to our foreheads. As you receive ashes, listen for the minister to say, “Turn away from sin and be faithful to the gospel” (based on Mark 1:15), or “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you will return” (based on Genesis 3:19). 170-3 LENTEN REGULATIONS 2015 Weekdays of Lent: There is no obligation to fast. However, voluntary acts of self-denial are recommended. Ash Wednesday & Good Friday: All between the ages of 18 and 59 inclusive are bound to FAST by limiting themselves to a single full meal on Ash Wednesday and on Good Friday, while the other two meals on those days are to be light. All age 14 and up are also bound by the rules of ABSTINENCE. Days of Abstinence: (All Fridays in Lent): All who have reached their 14th year are bound to abstain totally from meat. Everyone is encouraged to participate in Mass and to receive the Holy Eucharist daily, to celebrate frequently the Sacrament of Penance, to undertake spiritual reading, especially the study of the Sacred Scriptures, and to participate in parish Lenten devotions and Lenten education programs.
