A MESSAGE FROM THE CONTROLLER
Hello, members!
T
o those of you who I have not had the opportunity to meet, I am Sandy
Oppel, the Club’s Controller. I was born and raised in Louisville, and I
have been a Cards fan since I was in my mother’s womb! Yes, I am a sports
nerd. I am in my eighth year at the Club having joined the team in July
2007. When I was a student here at U of L, the University Club did not even
exist; however, it is currently alive and kicking as we celebrate our 24th year
in business!
What is a “club”? Webster’s dictionary defines it as an association of persons
for some common object usually jointly supported and meeting periodically; a group identified by some common characteristic or an association
of persons participating in a plan by which they agree to make regular
payments or purchases in order to secure some advantage. Our Club is
“jointly supported” by 1,000+ members with the “common goal” of gathering
to enjoy planned events, lunches and socializing and/or networking with
friends, colleagues and business associates. Our mission is to serve the
members as if they were family, and to strive to provide programs and food
that make you want to come back for more. You are your Club. You are
what you make of your Club. The door is always open for any member to
suggest a new event or tell us how to improve on an old one or to suggest
new food items at lunch or comment on offerings. We want to know your
likes and dislikes so we can improve on what has been built thus far. The
Club will continue to grow strong as long as its membership grows. How do
you accomplish this you ask? Taking a line from Coach Walz, the next time
you come to the Club for lunch or for an event, bring one, two or five or ten
of your good friends who may not know about us and let them experience
the Club. This is how we can grow—show them your Club and what it has
to offer.
As March Madness is right around the corner, I close by saying please
continue to support your Club, and of course, GO CARDS!

Dear Member,
I am writing to inform you that
the Board elections will be done
by electronic voting this year.
This is a decision made based on
reducing the cost associated with
mailing of the ballots. However,
we will be delighted to send a mail
ballot to you the members who
prefer a mail ballot. Please send
Linda Johnson a request should
you prefer a mail ballot. Voting
will be available online beginning
Monday February 23rd. I appreciate your continued support of the
University Club and please do not
hesitate to let me know if I can be
of any assistance to you.
Best regards, J.P. Mohsen
2014-15 Board President

Professor Susan Jarosi
The Art Market for the Other 99%
S
usan Jarosi, Professor of Art History,
will explore the ways in which
economic histories of the arts can inform
the study of the markets for contemporary art. Though mention of the art
market typically calls to mind headlines
proclaiming record auction sales at
Christie’s, such events are not representative of the way in which most people
buy art. Dr. Jarosi will look to the center of
global painting production in the twenty-first century, the Dafen Art Village in
Shenzhen, China, for clues as to how we
might better understand the art market
for the other 99%; along the way, she’ll
take a surprising look back at the Golden
Age of Dutch art as profitable historical
precedent for contemporary practice.
Thanks to Bill Samuels, Jr. and his crew for a
