The Shrimper March 2015 T HE NE WS L E T T E R FOR MI D K E NT GC ME M B E RS 5 Shots Lower ….. without changing your swing! Club Captain Peter Brisley and Lady Captain Karen Watkins, as guests at an Orsett GC organised ‘’Mind Factor’’ workshop, were so impressed that they decided to book one for MKGC members. You’ll have the opportunity to check out this amazing claim at a specially organised evening at Mid Kent on Thursday 12th March 2015. At the event Europe’s leading mind coach, Karl Morris, will present the techniques successfully used with some of the world’s greatest golfers, such as Graeme McDowell, Darren Clarke, Louis Oosthuizen, Charl Schwartzel and Lee Westwood. The event is specifically structured to give you Tools and Techniques you can use instantly on the course. Karl’s claim is that you have absolutely nothing to lose but the frustration of Bad Golf!! Members Can Win £1000 Before disappearing on holiday to Egypt, Captain Peter Brisley announced details of his ’’Win £1000’’ Patio Bonanza Draw. Tickets at £5 are on sale from behind the Bar with the draw for the massive £1000 cash first prize and 10 runner up prizes of £50 taking place on the May Day Bank Holiday following the Lady Captain’s Charity Day shot gun event. Proceeds from the draw are going towards the much needed replacement of patio furniture. Rather than being taken from the capital projects fund, the Draw was seen as a ‘fun’ way to raise the required sum. 1 The Shrimper - March 2015 www.mkgc.co.uk Editor [email protected] On the course - Hole 1 Following the Forum in November, a Course Development Sub Committee was set up amongst a cross section of members volunteering to consider the proposals made by consultants EDI and make recommendations to the Board as to future action. Three members, Bruce Galbraith, Anne Oxtoby and Rod Fisher, working with Lee Sayers course Manager, Peter Lake Greens Director, Paul James Competitions Director and Steve Davies Chairman have brought forward responses 1-7 below on EDI’s proposals for action on holes 1, 14 & 18. EDI Proposal Sub Committee Response 1. The first shot of the day with a long iron, the proximity of the road, the tree lines and vegetation both converging "inwards" towards the green, the lack of definition to the immediate approach, the distant green approach and the penal bunkering all add up to a very tough opening shot. Safety signage to be placed adjacent to waiting area and tee. Clear undergrowth and trim back vegetation on left hand side of fairway. 2. At present the 1st hole does not have a fairway. A fairway acts as a sense of reward and guidance for the average golfer and a directional aid for the accomplished golfer. Adding a new tee to fairway path can create a directional aid to line-up on. Extend fairway from existing apron towards the tee. Discuss tee to fairway path with Lee. 3. The internal tree boundary to the RHS does not help the safety of the hole. The linear nature of the trees aims the golfer towards the green and left hand side of the green. The further left you "Tee up" the more pronounced the effect. Break rhythm of the trees by removing those directing golfers inwards. Remove trees 5-8 on right hand side of fairway. Removal of the large conifer on front right hand side of green will allow for easier recovery shot. 4. The cross bunker is penal, encouraging golfer to hit higher to carry its location. removing the bunker would allow higher handicap golfers to run the ball along the new fairway. Remove right hand side of cross bunker 5. The deep right hand greenside bunker encourages golfer to hit away and towards boundary. Removing this bunker and creating a more friendly grass swale/run off area would allow easier recovery shots from the right hand side. Extend the green front right over existing right hand bunker. 6. Green should be extended to back right quadrant to offset a shortened tee. The tee will not be shortened for this phase, so no extension of the green.. 7. Bring green in from the left with bunkering to the left hand side of the green, front to back to sit between the green and boundary for extra safety. 8. Reduce existing tee area by removing 1.5m minimum from left hand side. 2 The Shrimper - March 2015 www.mkgc.co.uk Agreed Placement of the tee blocks will achieve desired effect. Editor [email protected] On the course - Hole 14 EDI Proposal 3 Sub Committee Response 1. The existing Tee lines up correctly with the intended fairway, the high nature of the tee creates a launch-pad effect over the valley to an uphill, side sloped fairway sitting to a similar level. The turning point for the majority of members currently sits too far up the fairway towards the green, and should be brought back towards the flat part of the fairway, which is the furthest away from the existing boundary. Safety signage to be placed adjacent to waiting area and tee 2. New Tee's should be considered situated on the higher east side of the maintenance shed. This would allow for the desired landing area and reduce the risk of tee shots leaving the golf course. The length of the hole would be increased but the second shot would be from a flatter lie. New tees will not be considered for "Phase1" of the project. Implementing our recommendations will allow time to assess their effectiveness. 3. Pushing the fairway towards the 5th would allow for the maximum distance from the boundary. Tree/copse removal must be undertaken to the entire left hand side, from the tee to the large Oak at the base of the hill. Keeping only one line of trees between the 5th and 14th fairways. Agreed, this would include five dying trees at 170yard mark. Large tree on LHS of fairway at 150yd mark to be retained until fairway changes in place. Further assessment at that time. 4. Bunkering and thick rough should be added to the right hand side of the fairway/hill to encourage the golfer to follow the fairway. Agreed, together with tree planting along boundary inside white post area 5. The green should be moved away from the boundary line into the huge space leading to the 15th tee. If moved bunkering should be placed on the right hand side between green and boundary. Left hand greenside bunker to be removed and green extended to left hand side, pulled in from the right. Bunker to front right hand side of green. 6. Bunker on the left hand side of the green should be removed and replaced with a grassy hollow See above 7. Create a tee to fairway pathway for linear direction to the tee shot Further discussion with Course Manager The Shrimper - March 2015 www.mkgc.co.uk Editor [email protected] On the course - Hole 18 EDI Proposal Sub Committee Response 1. Hole rises gently to the green from the tee and has a side slope from right to left. A tree belt divides the 10th and 18th fairways. There are a couple of larger trees to the category 1 turning point on the LHS which encourage the golfer to aim and hit to the right hand side of the fairway to feed the ball to the centre of the fairway. The "fairway" trees are a feature of the hole and will be retained during phase 1. 2. There is additional room to extend the hole to the rear of the existing tee beyond the boundary on the old road. Not recommended for this phase, the added yardage would be difficult to justify. 3. The existing tee for the men's category is elevated which gives additional help to the launch trajectory of any golf ball. Consideration should be given to lowering the tee to reduce the launch angle and velocity of the tee shot. 4 Agreed 4. Both sides of the tee should aim towards the centre of the fairway. Agreed 5. The vegetation along both sides of the hole, particularly the lower LHS side where you can't see through to the 10th is thick and uncompromising. Consideration should be given to thinning the under story out to encourage golf balls to be hit towards this tree belt. Removing this tree belt will open up the entire left hand side of the hole. At present the golfer is being pushed towards the 1st hole and the boundary which is being breached by out of bounds shots. Removal of some trees and thinning out of the right hand side of the copse behind the ladies tee, combined with clearing the under story and trees to the tree belt between the 10th and 18th should bring the LHS of the fairway into play 6. The hedge line in front of the tee should be removed to open up the long vista through to the clubhouse. Agreed 7. The pathway should be moved to the extreme right hand side once the hedge is cleared. Agreed 8. The trees to the corner of the dog leg do not compliment the golf hole. We would recommend that these turning point trees are removed to open up the left side, encouraging more left positioned tee shots. Pushing fairway to left combined with some tree and under story removal should allow the golfer a risk & reward shot to the green. New bunkers to be constructed on RHS of fairway. 9. Culture a new fairway well away from the 1st and boundary Agreed The Shrimper - March 2015 www.mkgc.co.uk Editor [email protected] Men’s Locker Room Course schedule of work proceeding after approval of the working party’s recommendations (see pages 2,3,4) 4th-6th March - tree surgeons on site to remove 11 trees LHS 14 and 4 Trees RHS 1st. The five competitions, restricted to players not having a handicap lower than a preset limit and played on a level basis, are - Darren’s Newsletter Sundridge Park Trophy (5+) First match by 25 May 2015 away to Cherry Lodge. Darren Timms, Mid Kent’s touring professional has finally arrived back in the UK after a winter golf trip to Portugal. His trip lasted just over a month and it's fair to say it was a great trip. His main objective of the 4 weeks was to play some competitive golf, and get some time to practice. This was achieved by playing 6 events on the Algarve Pro Golf Tour. Wilding Cole Trophy (8+) First match by 25 May 2015 away to Langley Park. West Kent Trophy (11+) First match by 25 May 2015 home to Wrotham Heath. Reflecting on the trip it has been a great month abroad, I have really enjoyed my time in the sun (and occasional rain) and it has provided me with some competitive golf. Captains for these knockouts are - Sundridge Park Trophy Darren Drynan, Wilding Cole - Barry Plumb, West Kent Brian Peirce, Royal Blackheath Trophy - Dave Jackson, Gray Trophy - Brian Weston, Perman Shield - Steve Barrow Mail on Sunday - sadly, we lost in the first round of the MOS away to Woodlands Manor on Sunday 15 February 3½-1½. Joe Smith won 8/7, shooting level par. His opponent was off a 10 h/cap, the same as Joe!! ‘Mucky’ Garcha halved and the others, Paul Johnson, Mick Helaith & Mark Gee lost narrowly. A great day and very good hospitality. 5 The Shrimper - March 2015 www.mkgc.co.uk Read full report at ww.darrentimms.co.uk Now back in the UK I have to finalise my plans for the next few weeks up until Europro Qualifying School, that's the next big thing on my calendar. I have the next 2 weeks planned out to spend time with my coaches and Mizuno, looking at the areas to improve and building a plan for Tour School. I can't wait to get the season started, 2015 is looking bright. Editor [email protected] Ladies Section Mail on Sunday Ladies Supper - Friday 27th February - for this year’s event Mid Kent ladies have secured the services of Michelle (‘Mickey’) Walker as their after dinner speaker. Mickey has a formidable record as a professional golfer, being a founding member of the Ladies European Tour and winning six times on the tour between 1979 and 1984. She was Europe's Solheim Cup captain the first four times the Cup was held (1990, 1992, 1994 and 1996), captaining Europe to its first victory in 1992. She coached the GB & Ireland Curtis Cup team in 1994, 1996 and 1998. She has also worked as a golf coach, radio and television commentator and public speaker. She now leads Golf Tours to Chile, India, Hong Kong and New Zealand on behalf of the British tour operator Jon Baines Tours and teaches golf. Widely travelled, Mickey has met many colourful personalities throughout her career, providing her with a great fund of interesting and amusing tales. Chris Waghorne has taken on the Mail on Sunday mantle. This has been successfully worn for some time by Brid McInerney, who will be devoting her time to our Bradley Cook challenge, assisting Eamonn in his build up to Club Captaincy and ….. if she gets a moment … perhaps playing a bit of golf!! Chris Waghorne, in the first of her reports (we look forward to printing many more from Chris and the rest of the Ladies’ team captains) writes - WE WON! Once again the Mid Kent Ladies were drawn against Dartford in the first round of The Mail on Sunday competition. Although there was a heavy frost on the day, the greens at Dartford were soon clear for the competition to go ahead as planned. There is no set order of play which means the handicap differences can be quite high for certain games. This didn't faze the experienced team from Mid Kent who went on to win 3 and 2 on the day. Special mentions go to Loo Brackpool for "taking out" the one handicapper from Dartford who conceded on the 16th green. To Sheila Glass for keeping her cool on the 17th and finishing with a birdie. To Annette Fraser for playing out of her socks when having to give 8 shots and still winning 6&5. To Julia Ridley for taking the pressure and having to take her final putt on the 18th in front of the crowd of players and vast numbers of supporters. To Chris Waghorne ….. for turning up and being Captain on the day. It’s a hard life! Ladies inter club competitions - you know that the golfing ‘’season’’ is underway when these start up. The first Ladies’ Friendly match is 1st April, Gillingham away. Sign up sheets are on the noticeboard….. so, come on Ladies! The Mid Kent team in the KCLGA Bradley Cook scratch event will be captained by Brid McInerney. In the round robin stage, we are drawn to play Lamberhurst & Sittingbourne. Anne Oxtoby captains the Pearson Trophy team. In the initial round robin we are drawn against Royal Cinque Ports, Chislehurst, North Foreland and Kings Hill. Chris Waghorne takes on the Mail on Sunday mantle, Jo Smith the Tappin Trophy & Wendy Jackson the LA cup. 6 The Shrimper - March 2015 www.mkgc.co.uk Well done Girls …. Friday 10th April – Gillingham - home It was not a day for the faint hearted, with only 13 brave souls (or some might say stupid) turning out to play. It was a struggle for almost all of us, but not for the Welsh wizard Mervyn Davis. Complete with oxygen tank and mask, he stormed ahead winning with 43 points, 7 points ahead of second placed, Mick Mackley with 36 points. Sad to say, as it was all temps, it was played as a non-qualifier! Tuesday 28th April - Sittingbourne away Costin Putter (awarded to the player with the highest aggregate of his best six Shrimpers Monthly Medal scores). In the event of a tie, the winner will be decided by the seventh best score and so on. The competition runs from January to December. For a number of years COT have been providing living & working facilities for disabled people around a Rare Breeds Centre. The Centre is already very good, but quite a challenge to maintain around a working farm plus improved facilities for some of the animals (larger pens etc. etc) are requred. The shirt will only be £15 and the slipover £25. If both are bought at the same time there will be a reduction of £5 giving you a bargain price of £35, the pair. I will let you know via the Shrimpers notice board and Vets web page when they are available. Is this the future? - Recently things have changed …... tee markers vandalised, walk way ropes cut, a driver stolen from the drying room, noticeboard pens disappearing by the bucket load and now someone who thought his need was greater than the rest of us and has taken the reading glasses from the Shrimpers noticeboard!! £500 was raised on the night, all of this going to improve the facilities for the disabled people who work on the farm. The winning score, 148 out of a possible 160, went to the Kinks and is the highest COT have ever had for the particular quiz used. Even the 21st placed team, TakeThat, scored a respectable 80.5. I will now have to write everything in 1” high letters or put up with “what does it say?” So it would be nice if whoever “borrowed” the glasses, could please return them. This Junior Team, pictured above from left, are Connor, Harry Knight and George Hamblyn. 9 The Shrimper - March 2015 www.mkgc.co.uk In 2013 he won the scratch Mid Kent Open by shooting 70 gross off a handicap of 12. His other hobby is football, which he plays for Higham Eagles. He won the Junior Order of Merit in 2013 qualifying him for the Junior team in the ProAm that year.
