ANZAC Overnight Vigil – 24 to 25 April 2015
As a way of marking the ANZAC Centenary this year, and our nation’s involvement in the First
World War, on the evening of 24 April we plan to hold an overnight vigil at the School in the
Wheelton courtyard. Students and community members will be welcome to come to a BBQ
dinner, followed by music performances and a movie, before camping out under the stars,
just as the original ANZAC did 100 years ago. During the night, small groups of students will
stand vigil beside the honour boards listing all the Grammarians who died in the Great War.
At 6.00am on 25 April we will conduct our own Dawn Service with members of the School
Band, followed by breakfast and concluding in time for members of our Cadet Unit to travel
into the city to help lead the ANZAC Parade. More information will follow about this event, but
for now, keep the date free in your diaries.

Happy Chinese New Year!

I would like to wish all our families a Happy Chinese New Year for Thursday 19 February. This
is a very special time for our boys of Chinese background, particularly those who, in order to
attend Camberwell Grammar School, are separated from their families. To celebrate the Year of
the Sheep, the Chinese Department will commence their Chinese New Year Celebrations next
week. Various cultural activities will be undertaken in the Junior, Middle and Senior Schools
during the week.

Parents’ Association Start of Year Social Functions
Tonight we will see the last of the Parents’ Association start of year functions, when parents of
boys from the Senior School will gather in the amphitheatre of the Wheelton Centre.
I am very grateful to the Parents’ Association again for organising and hosting these functions
and say how much I have appreciated the opportunity to welcome parents from the various
year groups of the School to a new School Year. We have a special community at our school
which is characterised by a down-to-earth and warm spirit and I am very grateful for the
support we receive as we work to educate your sons.
Immunisation Program 2015
A reminder that the first round of immunisations will take place on Tuesday 17 February
commencing at 9.30am in the foyer of the Performing Arts Centre. Year 7 will have the HPV
vaccine while Years 9 and 10 will have diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis (whooping cough)
vaccine. Year 8 will have their immunisation in April. Could you please ensure that consent
cards have been returned to the school even if your son is not being immunised. Under new
Health Department regulations, if we do not have a record of your consent card being returned,
the City of Boroondara Immunisation Unit will contact you regarding your son’s immunisation.
If you have any questions regarding the immunisation program, please contact Ms Rhonda
Nicholson, our Student Health Coordinator, on 9835 1777.

Parent/Form Teacher Interviews
On Tuesday 17 February we are hosting the Year 6 and 7 Parent/Form Teacher evening here in
the William Angliss Building. Appointments with your son’s Form Teacher can be made online
until 5.00pm on Monday. The evening is primarily designed as a chance to share information
about your son with his Form Teacher. There is also an opportunity to discuss his start to the
year.

Throughout the evening we are also hosting information sessions on the upcoming Year 7
Camp to Flinders. Ms Kirsty McDougall, Director of Activities, will run 20 minute sessions in
A32-33 commencing at 5.00pm, 6.00pm and 7.00pm. Parents are asked to attend one of these
sessions that coincides with their interview time.
Friday Afternoon Activities
The Friday Activities Program runs throughout the year and proves to be an important and
enjoyable part of school life. Today the boys were involved in athletics trials at Stradbroke
Park. This helps our House Coordinators with their team selections for the House Athletics
Carnival, which will be held on Thursday 26 February. This Term Friday afternoons are also
devoted to the House Triangulars Competition, which sees boys representing their Houses in a
range of sports, including basketball, table tennis, hockey, football, handball, volleyball, soccer,
orienteering and softball. In each sport the boys are competing for a trophy, with all points
going towards the overall House Cup. All trophies and cups are on display in the glass cabinet
on the middle floor of the William Angliss Building.
In instances when the temperature has reached 36 degrees at lunchtime, we will cancel the
Friday Activities and hold House or year level meetings. In these cases, an email will be sent
advising parents that school will be concluding at 3.20pm.
During Terms 2 and 3, Year 7 and 8 boys select activities from a wide range of offerings, which
include taekwondo, chess, model making, bike riding, golf, gardening and indoor sports among
many others. More information on how these activities are selected will be sent out later in
Term 1. Year 6 boys join this program in Term 3, after competing in an AGSV Round Robin
Competition in second term. In Term 4 the House competition is re-launched with swim trials
and the House Swimming Carnival.
Throughout the year the boys receive many opportunities to try new sports, activities and
hobbies. It proves to be a great way to conclude the working week and I am looking to seeing
the boys involved in a wide range of pursuits in the coming months.
Walk For Youth
We have been invited to participate in a Walk for Youth with Camberwell Girls’ Grammar School
next Tuesday afternoon. The walk will take place straight after school and will conclude at
5.30pm. It is $5.00 to join the walk and participants are also encouraged to gather sponsors.
All money raised will support Ladder, an organisation that tackles youth homelessness.
Interested boys should sign up at the Middle School Office and collect a sponsorship form.

Parent Teacher Meeting
On these two evenings there will be an opportunity for you to meet with your son’s classroom
teacher, specialists and support staff. The purpose of this introductory interview is to provide
an opportunity for you to meet your son’s teachers and to share important information with them.
To keep boys and siblings safe we request they are adequately supervised during interview
times. Please note, due to government regulations, boys who are not booked into Aftercare
cannot join this group in outside play. As the library is used for interviews it is also unavailable.

Next Tuesday 17 February, the Senior School boys from Summons House will be selling gelati
in the Junior School at lunchtime. The cost is $2.00 per cone and all money collected will go
to charity.
Mathematics: What are the Learning Keys?
Number knowledge is a complex topic and children learn at different rates. In this session
parents will be exposed to the master keys that open doors for successful number learning and
see how these key understandings can be developed.
The session will be an active, hands-on workshop intended to give parents simple strategies,
ideas and games that can be played at home. These strategies and games will provide students
with additional practice and assist in the development of mental computation, improved
mathematical thinking and understanding of key ideas.

help beginner readers and writers and answer any questions you might have. Mrs Caroline Gatley

Mrs Philippa Higgins Literacy Intervention teacher, will be giving a talk on how to help your son
with reading, handwriting and spelling.

Year 4 and 5 Parent iPad Information Evening
Before the one-to-one iPad program in Years 4 and 5 begins for 2015, it is essential that
home and school are working together to ensure the success of the program through safe
and effective use of the technology. For this reason we require that each boy attends this
important presentation in company with at least one of his parents to the information evening
on Thursday 26 February in the Middleton Theatre from 7.00pm to 8.30pm.The evening will
deal with the practical set up and use of iPads, the expectations and requirements, as well as a
‘digital citizenship’ component delivered by consultant, Mr Brent Headley. There will be also be
time for a ‘questions and answers’ segment. It would be helpful if parents brought along their
copy of ‘iPad Use Policy’ issued at the end of last year. The policy is also available on the class
website in the Administration section.

Well done to all of the new Year 7s on their involvement last weekend in their first round of
AGSV Summer Sport. Congratulations must also go to Luke Kelvie (Year 7) who made 111 not
out in his first ever game for Camberwell Grammar. It was also great to see a myriad of sports
on offer with all students enjoying themselves in the thrill and friendship of competition.

Several parents have been downloading the CGS Sports App, which is wonderful, and we now
have over 250 people signed up. It is a great way to get all the latest information and has replaced
the old Sports Information Line, in regards to cancellations or late changes to sporting fixtures.
Winter pre-season is still underway for several sports so please email me for further information
if you have missed the details.
Mouthguard fittings are scheduled for Tuesday 24 February from 3.15pm in the Cafeteria.

Sport Report
Camberwell’s First Volleyball Team played last year’s runners up, Yarra Valley on
Saturday. Camberwell won the first set thanks to strong play from Captain, Tao Wang and
Josh Sharman (both Year 12). Yarra Valley fought back, however, winning the next three sets.
The Second Volleyball Team got off to a slow start in their match against Trinity, losing the first
set. However, Camberwell’s fortunes changed as David Gray’s (Year 12) setting, combined with
strong defensive play from John Kypuros (Year 12), led to Camberwell levelling the scores at a
set apiece. A stellar performance from Will Johnson and Kyle Connolly (both Year 12) proved to
be vital in the last set as Camberwell capped off an impressive victory.
The First VIII Tennis side played Trinity on Saturday, a critical match with both teams playing off
to enter the top four in the competition. The team started brilliantly with our undefeated pair,
Stephen Chen and Alek Harper (Year 10), playing impressive tennis. Camberwell emerged with a
7-1 lead after the first round of doubles. Camberwell continued their dominance, moving into the
singles matches, ultimately winning the match 12 sets to four.
The First Basketball Team matched Trinity during the first half, with outstanding play from
Mitchell Fletcher (Year 11), helping Camberwell head into the half time break just six points down.
Unfortunately, Trinity picked up after half time, sinking a number of three pointers to open up the game.
Matt Appleyard and Mike Schumann (both Year 11) both played well but Camberwell were
eventually defeated 50-76.
The Second XI Cricket Team had their first win of the season. Composed run scores in the 20s
from both Rohan Chitale (Year 10) and Will Dalrymple (Year 11) helped Camberwell to an imposing
score. Tight bowling from Max Henderson (Year 11) and Rohan Chitale left Trinity needing 18 to
win off the final over, a task that proved too much as Camberwell finished the day as victors.
Last weekend one of our First XI Team members, Andrew Young (Year 11), played in the Grand
Final of the Dowling Shield - the State Under 16 Regional Cricket Tournament. Andrew made 112,
which steered his side, the Inner East Emus, to victory over the Barwon Rockets, and was named
Player of the Finals. Congratulations to Andrew.

Tuckwell Scholarship
ANZAC Overnight Vigil
Australian National University (ANU) launched the Tuckwell Scholarship Program in 2013.
The Tuckwell Scholarship, valued at $20,000.00 per year for up to five years, is awarded to
academically able students with the desire and determination to make a difference in the
world. Eligible students should expect an ATAR of 95+, though those who have achieved
significantly in other ways may still be eligible.
Applications open on 2 March 2015 and close on 20 March 2015. For more information about

CGS Auxiliary Cafeteria Volunteers
The Camberwell Grammar School Cafeteria provides an important service to the school.
A wide variety of foods and beverages are sold each day from breakfast to lunch time to boys
in Years 6 to 12, as well as staff. The Cafeteria also provides a system of daily lunch orders
which are delivered to the boys in the Junior School, Norge. The CGS Cafeteria is managed
by Rowland Commercial Catering and two parent volunteers assist each day from 9.30am to
1.00pm. The Cafeteria Roster is currently full for Term 1 but we are always looking for new
volunteers. As Terms 2 to 4 are longer, we do require additional volunteers and it is great to
have emergencies when possible.

announce that Chairman of beyondblue and former Premier of Victoria, Mr Jeff Kennett,
has agreed to speak to parents and students on the topic of Building Resilient Teenagers.
Mr Kennett, drawing upon the breadth of his experience, current research and the insights
he has gained through his leadership of beyond blue, will discuss the means by which both
adults and teenagers can affirm their identity in order to live purposefully and positively,
particularly in order to lessen the effects of stress and anxiety.

Parents’ Prayer Group
The first Parents’ Prayer Group for 2015 will be held on:
Monday 23 February, 2.00pm to 3.00pm (or stay on until school pick up time).
Being our first meeting for the year, we will start with afternoon tea to catch up with
each other and share news after the long summer break. If you cannot make it for
tea/coffee at the start there will also be time at the end of the meeting.
The Prayer Group meets monthly to pray for needs within the CGS Community.
We meet in the School Chapel, Room W204 on the 2nd floor of the Wheelton Centre.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION CLASSES
At Camberwell Grammar School we value the benefit of a well-rounded education. All
students from Year 7 through to Year 12 are expected to participate in a double period of
Physical Education each week during your son’s designated timeslot, as seen on his
timetable. This is in addition to his Saturday Sport training and game commitments.
Due to the current building construction program, and with limited areas available on
site, some of your son’s Physical Education classes will be held at venues off campus to
support the Physical Education program. These venues include the Anniversary Trail,
Aqualink (Box Hill), Balwyn Park, Boroondara Sports Complex, Deepdene Oval, Deepdene
Tennis Club, Goodlife Gym (Balwyn), Matlock Reserve Hockey Pitch, MCC Kew Bowls Club
and Shenley Oval.
I would also like to take this opportunity to remind parents that the correct PE uniform is
the House polo shirt with School crest and navy shorts with crest, white socks and
appropriate runners. The CGS crested sport top may also be worn. Students are
encouraged to wear their School approved hats for PE classes, particularly during Term 1
and Term 4. If your son’s final lesson of the day is Physical Education he can wear his PE
uniform home. It is important however, that students travel home in either full School
uniform, or full sports uniform – not a combination of the two. Additionally all students
should have navy crested tracksuit pants and the CGS spray jacket for the cooler days.

MUSIC THEORY CLASSES
Dear Parent
This year the Music School is offering Music Theory classes free of charge to
instrumental music students in the Middle School (Years 6 to 8). They will cover the
syllabus requirements for Grades 1 and 2 AMEB (Australian Music Examinations Board).
Students will be given the opportunity to sit an AMEB Music Theory Examination through
Camberwell Grammar School. These examinations are recommended for instrumental
music students as a support to their instrumental and classroom music learning.
The AMEB is an external organisation and enrolling in an examination will incur a cost.
However, the classes are free of charge.
The examinations may be sat online at any time up until the end of Term 3. Students will
be able to sit the examination when they are ready and scheduling at school permits. An
enrolment form for the examination providing more details will be sent home during
Term 2.
Classes will run on Thursday mornings between 7.50am to 8.30 am and will commence
on Thursday 26 February. Students wishing to enrol must return their forms to the Music
Office by Friday 20 February, at the latest.

2015 TENNIS LESSONS
For a number of years now, the School has offered students the opportunity to access tennis
lessons from Club Professionals. In 2015, Mr Rob Ensor and M. Adam Stone will again be
offering their services to students in Years 3 and above. Mr Ensor and Mr Stone are the Club
Professionals at Grace Park Tennis Club. In addition, they are also employed by MLC as
coaches in their tennis program.
As an Old Camberwell Grammarian, Mr Ensor played Firsts’ tennis during 1998/1999.
Mr Stone has played college tennis in America as well as Premier League tennis at Grace Park.
Both have a strong passion for encouraging beginners; but they also have the skill and
experience to work with highly talented boys, always encouraging those boys to enjoy their
tennis whilst improving at the same time.
Classes for 2015 will be held on Wednesdays and Fridays at Shenley Tennis Courts in Rubens
Grove, Canterbury, located approximately 250 metres from the School, within easy walking
distance. All boys will be escorted to the courts and back to school at the completion of their
lesson.
The cost is $405 inclusive of GST and will be charged to your Sundry Extras Account. Boys
are guaranteed a minimum of 32 lessons. Any classes missed for reasons other than
deliberate student absence, will be made up at an alternative time. There will be a maximum
of 6 boys per coach and each session will be of 40 minutes duration. Tennis shoes must be
worn when participating in lessons.
Private and semi-private lessons will also be available from Monday to Friday with the option
of ½ hour or 1 hour sessions. Lesson times will run between 7:15am – 8:15am. Private
lessons will be at a cost of $70 for 1 hour and $35 for ½ hour. Semi – private lessons will be
at a cost of $35 for 1 hour and $17.50 for ½ hour.
If you would like your son to participate, please return the slip below to your relevant School
Office. As numbers are limited, places will be allocated in order of registration.
If attending, please keep a record of Mr Ensor's contact telephone number (0434 191 447),
should there be a need for you to contact him. If withdrawing, please note that at least one
term's notice of withdrawal is required, otherwise you will forfeit the applicable term fee.
The first tennis lesson will commence on Wednesday 4 February, 2015.
