William S. “Sandy” Stimpson, Mayor, City of Mobile
Mayor Sandy Stimpson is a native of Mobile and a 1970 graduate
from University Military School. He attended the University of
Alabama, receiving his undergraduate degree in 1975 in Civil
Engineering.
After graduating in 1975, he began what would become a 38-year
career with Gulf Lumber Company and its successor, Scotch &
Gulf Lumber, LLC.
Mayor Stimpson has been very active in the education of Mobile’s
youth. He served on the Board of Trustees of UMS-Wright
Preparatory School for 28 years, having been its chairman twice.
In 2007, he was a founding director of Prichard Preparatory
School and served as its chairman for seven years.
Mayor Stimpson also served on numerous other civic boards,
both locally and statewide. They include the Boys & Girls Club of
Southwest Alabama; Partners for Environmental Progress (PEP);
the Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce; the Alabama Policy
Institute; and the Business Council of Alabama.
He currently serves on the board of the Coastal Alabama
Partnership; the University of Alabama President’s Cabinet; and
the University of South Alabama’s Board of Trustees.
He and his wife, Jean, have been married since 1975. They have
four children, all of whom are married, and nine grandchildren.
They have been members of Ashland Place United Methodist
Church since 1976.

Call to Order: The meeting was called to order by club
president Ken Robinson. Bill Kinnaird offered the invocation
and Tom Martenstein welcomed visiting Rotarians and Guests.
Student Guest: Jessica Elizabeth Strenth, a senior at Saraland
High School spoke on the benefits she has received from
volunteering at various organizations.

Rob Hackbarth introduced Judge Naman who discussed his
observations handling juvenile cases. He said that during 2010
Mobile had more juvenile crime than Montgomery,
Birmingham and Huntsville, combined.

Stimpson was elected as Mayor in August of 2013 in his first foray
into the political arena. His vision is for Mobile to become the
safest, most business and family-friendly city in America by 2020.

• The Board of Directors will meet on February 26 due to Mardi
Gras.

The young people brought before his bench share a number
of statistics. He said 96% are being raised by a single parent
or relative in a household with an average of 5 children. Many
have a parent in jail. Most if not all, are doing poorly in school
with numerous suspensions or have dropped out altogether.
75% live in households supported by public assistance and
many have a mental health issue that has gone untreated.
And finally the judge noted that the average age of the
suspects he sees is eleven.
Judge Naman said that he does see hope and that it is
imperative to start early with children who are at risk. He gave
the example of a young man from a broken home who had
been enticed to sell drugs by a 40 year old predator. After
learning the facts of his case Judge Naman took a personal
interest in his life and it has now been turned around.

He praised groups like Big Brother/Big Sister which work oneon-one with young people giving them a responsible adult
friend to whom they can relate. He also cited the Drug
Education Council for their work with youth addiction, stating
that progress in Mobile is being made.
Mobile has seen a 44% decrease in violent crime by young
offenders and the county now ranks 39th rather than 48th in
the welfare of children statewide. Judge Naman said that

there is a long way to go but that his courtroom will continue
to support local organizations trying to reach young people
at risk.
After a series of questions and answers, Ken Robinson
thanked the judge and said that in his honor a donation has
been made to the Naman Initiative, d/b/a NEST which seeks
to assist with meeting the social service needs of court
referred juveniles and their families at the Strickland Youth
Center.
