【VERY IMPORTANT:Preparation for taking Japanese Language courses】
・SILS exchange students are required to take Japanese language courses while attending the
SILS program depending on your Japanese level. Having Japanese learning experience was
not required at the time of admission, however, taking at least 6 credits of Japanese
language courses is mandatory.
FYI: Curriculum of SILS exchange students (detailed explanation will be given at the
academic orientation on March 27 th) *SP3 = Study Plan 3 = exchange students at SILS
http://www.waseda.jp/sils/en/student/oneyear/SP3_Curriculum_20140306.pdf
・Your Japanese level will be assessed by the Japanese placement test called “J-CAT” before
the course registration period starts.
Only when you are placed at level 6 or above, you will be exempted from taking Japanese
language courses (the number of credits waived differs depending on the level.)
More detailed explanation will be given at the academic orientation.
・Especially when you do not have Japanese learning experience, we highly encourage you at
least to obtain read-write capability of hiragana and katakana BEFORE coming to Japan.
This is because, here in Waseda, Japanese language courses at level 1 are taught based on
the knowledge about hiragana and katakana.
That is, you will have difficulties to keep up with the courses without read-write capability
of hiragana and katakana even if you take the level 1 courses.
Also, please be informed that the Japanese language courses are basically taught in
Japanese .
・On the other hand, there is a course called “Japanese for “Zero” Beginners”.
This course will teach you hiragana and katakana. However, this is a 3-weeks short term
course conducted in April, meets 5 times a week (Mon. to Fri., 5 th period), and gives you 1
credit.
Actually many of the students this semester had difficulties to manage the schedule to take
this course, and even when they could manage to take this course, they had to start
attending the 5 credits of other courses before zero beginner course ended.
Therefore we would like to say that obtaining read-write capability of hiragana and
katakana BEFORE coming to Japan will be of great help to you once you come to Japan.
・Below is some recommended website for your preparation for taking Japanese language
courses.
