This year, the Sundays in Lent lead us to focus on five covenants God makes in the Hebrew Scriptures and to use them as lenses through which to view baptism. First Peter connects the way God saved Noah's family in the flood with the way God saves us through the water of baptism. The baptismal covenant is made with us individually, but the new life we are given in baptism is for the sake of the whole world. PRE-SERVICE MUSIC Stand GATHERING HYMN Hymn 418 “O Lord, throughout These Forty Days,” stanzas 1-3 GATHERING INVOCATION P: In the name of the Father, C: Amen. and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. THANKSGIVING FOR BAPTISM P: Joined to Christ in the waters of baptism, we are clothed with God's mercy and forgiveness. Let us give thanks for the gift of baptism. We give you thanks, O God, for in the beginning your Spirit moved over the waters and by your Word you created the world, calling forth life in which you took delight. Through the waters of the flood you delivered Noah and his family. Through the sea you led your people Israel from slavery into freedom. At the river your Son was baptized by John and anointed with the Holy Spirit. By water and your Word you claim us as daughters and sons, making us heirs of your promise and servants of all. We praise you for the gift of water that sustains life, and above all we praise you for the gift of new life in Jesus Christ. Shower us with your Spirit, and renew our lives with your forgiveness, grace, and love. To you be given honor and praise through Jesus Christ our Lord in the unity of the Holy Spirit, now and forever. C: Amen. 3 GREETING P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C: And also with you. HYMN OF PRAISE [Tune: Caithness, LSB 418] Be with us through this season, Lord and all our earthly days, that when the final Easter dawns, we join in heaven’s praise. Words: based on Claudia F. Hernaman, 1838-1898; para. Gilbert E. Doan, b. 1930, copyright © 1978 Lutheran Book of Worship. All rights reserved. Reprinted under OneLicense.net #A-717236. PRAYER OF THE DAY P: Let us pray. Holy God, heavenly Father, in the waters of the flood you saved the chosen, and in the wilderness of temptation you protected your Son from sin. Renew us in the gift of baptism. May your holy angels be with us, that the wicked foe may have no power over us, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. Sit WORD FIRST READING—Genesis 9:8-17 (Please see the back page of this worship folder.) Today's reading is the conclusion to the flood story. Because of human sin, the Lord destroys the earth by flood, saving only Noah, his family, and the animals on the ark. Yet divine destruction gives way to divine commitment. As in the first creation, God blesses humanity and establishes a covenant with all creatures. After the reading: A: The word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. PSALMODY—Psalm 25:1-10; refrain, vs. 10 P: To you, O LORD, I lift up my soul. O my God, in you I trust; do not let me be put to shame; do not let my enemies exult over me. Do not let those who wait for you be put to shame; let them be ashamed who are wantonly treacherous. Make me to know your ways, O LORD; teach me your paths. 4 C: All your paths, O LORD, are steadfast love and faithfulness. P: Lead me in your truth, and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all day long. Be mindful of your mercy, O LORD, and of your steadfast love, for they have been from of old. Do not remember the sins of my youth or my transgressions; according to your steadfast love remember me, for your goodness’ sake, O LORD! Good and upright is the LORD; therefore he instructs sinners in the way. C: All your paths, O LORD, are steadfast love and faithfulness. P: He leads the humble in what is right, and teaches the humble his way. All the paths of the LORD are steadfast love and faithfulness, for those who keep his covenant and his decrees. C: All your paths, O LORD, are steadfast love and faithfulness. P: Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; C: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. SECOND READING—1 Peter 3:18-22 (Please see the back page of this worship folder.) As God acted through Christ's suffering and death to bring us to God, so God acts through baptism to save us from a sinful existence. This spiritual cleansing marks our new life in Christ. After the reading: A: The word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Stand GOSPEL—Mark 1:9-15 (Please see the final page of this worship folder.) The Spirit that comes upon Jesus at his baptism sustains him when he is tested by Satan so that he might proclaim the good news of God's reign. Before the reading: P: The holy gospel according to Mark. C: Glory to you, O Lord. After the reading: P: The gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to you, O Christ. 5 Sit SERMON Text: Theme: Romans 8:32 “God Did Not Spare God’s Son” 1. God did not spare Jesus from the devil’s temptations. 2. God did not spare Jesus from death. HYMN OF THE DAY Hymn 809 “Great Is Thy Faithfulness” Stand APOSTLES’ CREED P: God had made us God’s people through our baptism into Christ. Living together in trust and hope, we confess our faith. C: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. 6 GREAT LITANY P: Lord, have mercy. C: Lord, have mercy. P: Christ, have mercy. C: Christ, have mercy. P: Lord, have mercy. C: Lord, have mercy. P: O Christ, hear us. C: In mercy hear us. P: Holy Trinity, one God, C: have mercy on us. P: Be gracious to us. C: Spare us, good Lord. P: Be gracious to us. C: Spare us, good Lord. C: We implore you to hear us, good Lord. P: To give to all nations justice and peace; to preserve our country from discord and strife; to direct and guard those who have civil authority; and to bless and guide all our people: C: We implore you to hear us, good Lord. P: To forgive our enemies, persecutors, and slanderers, and to reconcile us to them; to help us use wisely the fruits and treasures of the earth, the sea, and the air; and graciously to hear our prayers: C: We implore you to hear us, good Lord. P: Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, C: we implore you to hear us, good Lord. P: Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world; C: have mercy on us. MEAL PREFACE P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them to the Lord. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C: It is right to give our thanks and praise. PROPER PREFACE P: It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ. You call your people to cleanse their hearts and prepare with joy for the paschal feast, that renewed in the gift of baptism, we may come to the fullness of your grace. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: HOLY, HOLY, HOLY 9 EUCHARISTIC PRAYER LORD’S PRAYER C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. COMMEMORATIONS FOR THE WEEK February 23—Polycarp, Bishop of Smyrna, martyr, died 156 Polycarp was Bishop of Smyrna (in present-day western Turkey) and a link between the apostolic age and the church at the end of the second century. He is said to have been known by John, the author of Revelation. In turn he was known by Iranaeus, bishop of Lyon in France, and Ignatius of Antioch. At the age of eighty-six he was martyred for his faith. When urged to save his life and renounce his faith, Polycarp replied, “Eighty-six years I have served him, and he never did me any wrong. How can I blaspheme my king who saved me?” The magistrate who made the offer was reluctant to kill a gentle old man, but he had no choice. Polycarp was burned at the stake, his death a testimony to the cost of renouncing temptation. February 25—Elizabeth Fedde, deaconess, died 1921 Fedde was born in Norway and trained as a deaconess. In 1882, at the age of thirty-two, she was asked to come to New York to minister to the poor and to Norwegian seafarers. Her influence was wide-ranging, and she established the Deaconess House in Brooklyn and the Deaconess House and Hospital of the Lutheran Free Church in Minneapolis. She returned to Norway in 1895 and died there. ‘’’ From Sundays and Seasons.com. Copyright 2015 Augsburg Fortress. All rights reserved. VOTER’S MEETING MARCH 1, 2015 Due to an unexpected resignation of one of the Elders, Church Council on Feb. 9, 2015, passed an emergency resolution to place Brian Stapleton in that vacant position so he may immediately function as an official church elder. There will be a short Voter’s Meeting on March 1, 2015 to hold an election so he may be placed in the position by a vote of the membership. This election will take place at 10:00 a.m. at the beginning of Bible study on March 1, 2015. Immanuel is blessed that Brian is willing to fill this position. SPRING FORWARD! Daylight Saving Time begins Sunday, March 8, 2am. LCEF ‘INVESTORS’ SUNDAY,’ MARCH 15 Lutheran Church Extension Fund (LCEF) will present a Shared Blessing Loan Rebate check in the amount of $739 to Immanuel on Sunday March 15, as part of an Investor’s Sunday. This represents a rebate we will enjoy during the life of the loan we have with LCEF and is a pro-rated amount for this year based upon when we became eligible. The first “fifth Sunday” is Palm Sunday, March 29. On that Sunday there will be one worship service at 9:30 a.m. There will be no Bible study. At 11:00 a.m., there will be a congregational potluck dinner. Everyone is welcome. As mentioned, that particular Sunday is Palm Sunday. The children will be parading with palms during the service. This is an event that is enjoyed by everyone! Please plan on attending. Parking could be a bit tight that day, you are invited to use the office parking area immediately to the west of our church parking lot. To help with planning, it would be helpful if individuals would be willing to bring food according to the following assignments. If this is not convenient, that is no problem. It is merely an attempt to try and ensure our menu will not consist of 40 desserts and no main dish! Families with last names starting with: A – G: Main Dish H – S: Side Dish or Salad T – Z: Dessert We look forward to enjoying this meal as an Immanuel family. LENTEN DEVOTIONS FROM LUTHERAN HOUR MINISTRIES "The Light Shines in the Darkness" Written by Rev. Wayne Palmer. In The Light Shines in the Darkness, Rev. Palmer has penned a thoughtful meditation on Christ's life and passion presented in the Gospel of John, which illuminates this beloved book with insight and clarity. It is a captivating portrait of Jesus' battle against the darkness of unbelief, prejudice and blind, murderous hatred as He fought for us all the way to the cross and back from the empty tomb. The universal message of hope in John's Gospel is powerful and written with one purpose in mind: "Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His Name" (John 20:30-31). Pick up a copy from the table in the narthex, listen on line to the audio version, or get by e-mail subscription (available beginning February 18, at http://www.lhm.org/lent/). THANK YOU! Thank you for your Ash Wednesday offering, which, unless otherwise designated, was divided between the Kansas District’s Scholarship Fund and its Loan Repayment Fund. The first provides scholarships for people preparing for full -time church careers, and the second assists those who are now serving in Kansas in full-time church careers to repay their education loans. Your commitment is appreciated. STEWARDSHIP SENTENCE - Mark 1:13 “And he was with the wild animals, and the angels were ministering to him.” God the Father cared for Jesus even in the midst of his temptation in the wilds. God cares for us in every situation, as well. Jesus realized this and always acted from the basis of trust in God the Father’s provision. This is likewise the basis for our life lived in Christ: God cares for us, so we need not act out of fear or greed. 17 VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR SUNDAY MORNING 11AM-FELLOWSHIP SNACKS Please volunteer to bring snacks and goodies for Sunday morning fellowship time – we particularly need folks to sign up to bring snacks for the 11am service. PLEASE NOTE: Signup sheets are both in the volunteer notebook on the table in the narthex, and also in the new kitchen – use either one, and pick your Sunday! Contact Martha Preboth, 316-207-6455, if you have questions. NOTICE TO MEMBERS WHO PURCHASE GROCERY BUCKS – We received notice from Dillons that they will no longer sell Dillons grocery cards to us at the 6% discount we have enjoyed for the past 7 years! They have a new program called Community Rewards that we will still be able to participate in. It is a payback program tied to your Dillons Plus cards. But you need to sign up and assign Immanuel Lutheran to your card for us to receive the payback. It will not be the 6% but it will be something paid quarterly based on how much we spend and how many people are in the program. Here is what you need to do. 1. Go to dillons.com 2. Click the Tab along the top labeled “community” and select “Community Rewards” 3. Either sign in (if you already have an account) or register for an account (you must have an e-mail address) 4. Enter the NPO number for Immanuel Lutheran Church when it asks for it (our number is 14991) and click on “enroll” That is all there is to it! Thanks to Jack Landgrebe for developing this quick and easy method! We still have cards available for sale (we purchased a large amount before they stopped selling them at a discount) so be sure to continue to purchase the Dillons cards until they are gone! We will continue to sell the other cards (Hy-Vee, Checkers, Merc, and Natural Grocers). Since the program began, we have paid over $55,000 down on our mortgage…so we need to continue! If you have questions, contact Elois Allan. THE LUTHERAN HOUR When Christ's story becomes yours by faith, life changes. Listen to “The Lutheran Hour” next Sunday at 7:30 a.m. on radio station WIBW 580 AM (Topeka), at 8:00 a.m. on KCMO 710 AM (Mission), or at 8:30 a.m. on KLWN 1320 AM (Lawrence), as Lutheran Hour Speaker Rev. Gregory Seltz preaches on the topic, “The True Author of Your Life Story,” based on 2 Corinthians 7:10. Or you can listen to “The Lutheran Hour” on streaming MP3 at http://www.lutheranhour.org/default.asp SOMETIMES IT'S HARD TO ASK FOR HELP We're brought up to be strong, self-sufficient, independent people. We tend to think that if we ask for help, it is a sign of weakness. So we try to keep our struggles hidden, stuffed deep inside. However, that's not God's plan. Galatians 6:2 says "Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ." God wants us to care for others—and allow others to care for us in our time of need.
