A long distance rider with a passion for
antique bikes
By Our Staff Reporter
Satheesh (resident of North Usman Road, T.
Nagar) is a bike enthusiast and is fondly called ‘Kero’
by friends.
He got the nickname thanks to an age old Jawa

bought the used Jawa bike in 1971 and got it
remodelled with two tanks, one for filling petrol (for
starting) and the other for running using kerosene.
He is a member of the ‘Jawa’ and ‘Yezdi’ brand bike
club called ‘Roaring Riders’.
Satheesh is a regular long distance rider. He
recently undertook a Chennai to Kodiakkarai (Point
Calimere) ride of about 400 km with club friends.
He owns 9 classic bikes including a Yezdi and
Lambardo in good running condition. He said that he
remodels bike for both looks and utility.
He said that the
club, apart from
organising fun
rides, also involves
itself in social causes like organising medical camps in remote
areas.
“My long term dream is to ride to Ladakh in Jammu and
Kashmir,” he added.
He can be reached at 94440 47273.

ESIC Medical
College students
stage dharna on
Anna Main Road
238 students of ESIC Medical College and Postgraduate
Institute of Medical Sciences
and Research staged a peaceful dharna on Feb. 18 on Anna
Main Road, K. K. Nagar, to
protest against the Union
Labour Ministry’s decision to
close down medical colleges it
runs under the Employee State
Insurance Corporation (ESIC)
Scheme.
Traffic officials had to regulate the traffic and appease
the students to give up the
protest on the road.
In its communication to all
medical colleges on January 5,
the Labour Ministry had informed that there would be no
further admissions to these
colleges as they would be wound
up after the current batches
graduate.
The Centre had requested the
State Governments to take
over these institutions and had
given them time till January 31
to take the call. Since there was
no communiqué from the
Tamilnadu Govt., the students
from the city staged a dharna to
attract the attention of the authorities.
The hospital was set up
on way back in 1971, but the
move to start medical colleges
came recently. The Medical
Council of India had given permission to start PG courses in
2011 and UG courses in 2013.
“There are now 200 UG and 38
PG students in the college. If
the college is not going to function further, the UG students’
degree would be of much lesser
value,” said Dr S. Soundharya
(a PG student and representative of ESIC Medical College
and PGIMSR Students Union).
About 80 per cent of the students got admission in the college after clearing either the
All India Medical Entrance
Examination or TN Medical
counselling, while the rest were
admitted under quota for insured persons.
MCI officials had inspected
the college in October last year
and had issued a notice to the
Centre to develop infrastructure and post additional faculty.

LETTERS TO THE
EDITOR
Pension lapses unresolved
Sir, Many retired employees are dependent
on their monthly pension (EPF) to meet their
day-to-day expenses. Officials of the EPF section need to ensure that the pension is credited into the bank accounts sans any interruption. It so happens that owing to either
some clerical lapse or non-receipt of “Alive”
lists from banks, the pension is discontinued
without notice. The pensioner is then forced
to run from pillar to post to restore the pension, which in many cases takes months together. I wonder, when the entire system is
computerized, how such lapses can occur.
There is a heavy shortage of staff in the EPF
department to handle the grievances as they
are already tied up with routine work.
Organising a regular meet to redress the
grievances of PF members by “Adalat” on the
one hand and ignoring the woes of EPF segment of senior citizens on the other is paradoxical. I appeal to the EPF officials to address the above mentioned issues. – V.
Vijayalakshmi, Lake View Road, West

the road margins and also
give them permission to plant saplings and build small
fences to protect them. – B. Nisha, 60th Street,
