ABOUT THE MERCK FELLOWSHIP
FOR GLOBAL HEALTH
What:
A three-month corporate pro bono program
designed to leverage the skills and talents of
Merck and MSD employees.
How:
Pairs the best minds from Merck with partner
organizations for meaningful and systematic
improvements in health service delivery for
people in greatest need.
5 cohorts / 70 Fellows / 24 NGO partners
Goals:
•
Strengthens the capacity and reach of non-profit organizations with technical and
human capital support
•
Provides rich professional development experiences for Merck employees,
requiring an embedded 3-month assignment with a non-profit partner

FELLOWS’ RESPONSIBILITIES
•
Devote two days to preparatory work
during on-boarding session (New Jersey,
USA)
•
Dedicate to serve full-time on
assignment for three months
•
Commit to institutional learning and
sustaining impact post-field assignment
over a six-month period
MERCK’S RESPONSIBILITIES
Merck’s Office of Corporate Responsibility along with its vendors:
•
Manage partner organization relationship
•
Handle Merck Fellow and local partner selection processes
•
Manage grants and per diems
•
Handle in-country logistics
HOST ORGANIZATION RESPONSIBILITIES

PROGRAM FOR EFFECTIVE HEALTH CARE
DELIVERY SYSTEM
Possible
Rural Himalayas, Nepal
Scope of Work:
3 Fellows:
•
Designed an electronic inventory system enabling
Possible’s staff to track the movement of medicines and
supplies throughout the hospital
•
Developed a consistent naming system for medicines
for easy identification by staff
•
Conducted a benchmarking survey of best practices in
Nepalese supply chain through national interviews with
suppliers and manufacturers, and shared the results
with Possible management team.
RESEARCH CAPACITY BUILDING FOR KEY
BIOMEDICAL LABS IN AFRICA
Bio Ventures for Global Health
Seattle, Washington
Scope of Work:
2 Fellows:
•
Examined the strengths and weaknesses of a
few key African research institutions working in
the field of Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs)
•
Assessed the current research occurring within
the labs and throughout the institution, and
identify areas of strengths and gaps in
capabilities
•
Shared their knowledge through presenting
seminars that describe key aspects of
pharmaceutical discovery, development, and/or
manufacturing.
