HOW THE NEW NAECA RULES AFFECT YOU 2015 HOW WATER HEATER PRODUCTS ARE CHANGING NAECA Compliant While NAECA will certainly present a certain level of challenges, a potential impact of the changes will be an increase in the share of water heaters sold through wholesale distribution, thereby, increasing installer opportunities. As products and installations become more sophisticated, it is less likely that these water heaters will be purchased and installed by the do-it-yourself consumer. • Many of the water heaters you’ve installed in the past will now be larger in size and weight (i.e. condensing units, heat pumps, etc.). Gas water heaters require additional insulation, incorporate newer flue baffling technologies (including flue dampers), incorporate electronic ignition in lieu of the standing pilot, or any combination of these. One impact will be an increase in the overall product size, especially in diameter. For gas-fired products over 55 gallons (≤ 75,000 BTU/Hr.), fully condensing combustion technology will most likely be required. This will also mean that line voltage will have to be available as will a means for condensate disposal. • These size and weight changes will affect how you store, specify, transport, and install water heaters. • There will also be new technologies introduced that may require you (and your employees) to participate in manufacturer or wholesaler sponsored training. • In cases where your customers cannot replace an existing water heater with a similar model, you will need to provide them with additional guidance on their water heater replacement options. • Some of the NAECA product options may require you to incorporate an electrical feed, venting, or condensate disposal into an installation where none of these factors existed with the original water heater. +1" or +2" NAECA EF Requirements for Residential Gas Water Heaters Calculation Rated Storage Volume Current Standard 2015 Standard 20-55 Gallons EF = 0.675 -- (0.0015 x V) Tankless 30 40 50 0.62 0.61 0.59 0.58 0.82 0.63 0.62 0.60 Greater than 55 Gallons EF = 0.8012 -- (0.00078 x V) 60 65 75 0.56 0.55 0.53 0.75 0.75 0.74 +2" GAS PRODUCTS 2015 Standards: Some gas water heaters less than or equal to 55 gallons will increase in size. CONTRACTORS • The water heater changes that are required by NAECA will affect the way you buy, store, transport, and sell products. • With some of the new sizes and technologies being a factor, you will need to provide more of a consultative approach to your contracting customers when they are faced with water heater replacement challenges. • To effectively guide your customers, you will be required to re-train employees so that they understand the intricacies of the new standards and the actual water heater changes. • Because some of the new style water heaters will require additional components, such as venting material and condensate pumps, you may have to stock additional SKU's to cover all of your customers’ water heater installation needs. WHOLESALERS • With many of the NAECA compliant water heaters becoming larger in size and weight, the space you’ve traditionally allotted to these products may have to change. • Since some of these products will also require changes in venting, power, and condensate removal, these will also have to factor into the design of your water heater space. • Some of the added features or new technologies, such as heat pumps, will introduce noise level factors that you did not have to consider in the past when selecting product placement. • These installations in your new single or multi-family housing structures will also have to take into account any future replacement situations. Electric water heaters will require more insulation. This will increase the diameter and/or height of the water heater. Additional insulation may be required for piping and fittings such as drain and T&P valves. Electric water heaters over 55 gallons (≤ 12 kW input) will likely utilize integrated heat pumps to meet the new EF requirements, based on currently available technology. +1" or +2" NAECA EF Requirements for Residential Electric Water Heaters Calculation Rated Storage Volume Current Standard 2015 Standard 20-55 Gallons EF = 0.960 -- (0.0003 x V) 20 30 40 50 0.94 0.93 0.92 0.90 0.95 0.95 0.95 0.95 Greater than 55 Gallons EF = 2.057 -- (0.00113 x V) 65 80 120 0.88 0.86 0.81 1.98 1.97 1.92 +2" ELECTRIC PRODUCTS 2015 Standards: Some electric water heaters less than or equal to 55 gallons will increase in size.
