HOW TO PICK THE PERFECT RUG
Casual or elegant, large or small, area rugs are a perfect – and portable – design solution. The
color, size and texture of the rug you choose can define a space, tie a room together or create
a cohesive feeling between multiple rooms. Coordinate with furniture and window coverings to
create an environment that makes you feel at home every time you walk in the door.
CHOOSE YOUR LOOK
The pattern and material of your rug should be your first consideration when making a decision.
Pairing rugs that have a common detail, pattern or color can harmonize a room, or a set of
rooms, and pull the overall space together.
HOW TO PICK THE PERFECT RUG
• Traditional rugs can range from Persians and florals to solid designs. Persians and floral
rugs work well with simpler furnishings while solid-colored rugs complement more
elaborate furnishings.
• Transitional rugs are characterized by geometric patterns. These rugs offer an updated
style to a traditional room. When making a choice in transitional rugs, it is important to
keep in mind the scale of pattern between the rug and other furnishings within the room.
• Natural Fiber rugs are crafted from a variety of plant materials such as jute, sisal and
seagrass. These rugs are often used to create a casual setting or as a foundation for many
design elements in a room such as layering smaller rugs on top.
CHOOSE THE QUALITY FOR YOUR SPACE
Consider function as well as fashion when choosing the perfect rug for your room.
• Wool: These rugs are cozy, soft and clean well, an ideal choice for most rooms, including
dining rooms, living rooms and bedrooms. Pile length can vary and a plusher look can be
achieved through choosing a shaggy or long pile rug.
• Natural Fiber: Our Natural Fiber rugs are made of sustainably harvested and fast

these as a foundation in any room for layering smaller flatweaves or patterned wool rugs.
• Flatweaves: These rugs are perfect for dining rooms and offices. They are durable and

and desk chairs. Layer them on a natural fiber rug for added depth and dimension.
• Indoor/Outdoor rugs: Hand-woven from durable easy-care polypropylene that resists
stains, these rugs are yarn dyed for vibrant, lasting color. They can be used for high
traffic indoor or outdoor areas like the entry, kitchen, patio and kids’ playrooms. They are

keep rugs smooth and flat by preventing corners from curling and making vacuuming

CHOOSE YOUR SIZE
Follow a few simple steps when adding a rug to your living area:
• First, measure your space with a steel measuring tape. Don’t rely on visual sizing;
a 5' x 8' rug may seem large when hanging on display in a store, but it is too small
to accommodate most sofas.
• Make sure to consider the locations of vents and doors, as they may affect the
placement of the rug.
• To create a smaller, more intimate space with your rug, measure the length and
width of the furnished area and subtract 24" from both measurements.
• In the living room or family room, furniture should be placed entirely on or off the
rug, with the exception of your sofa, which may be placed with its back legs on
the floor if desired.
• Always remember to double-check your measurements.

HOW TO PICK THE PERFECT RUG
• For a rug under a dining table and chairs, measure the table’s length and width
and add 54" to each measurement. This will provide 27" on all sides to allow space
for the chairs, even when pulled away from the table.
CARING FOR YOUR RUG
When properly cared for, rugs are a lasting investment. Follow this guide and you’ll enjoy
your Pottery Barn rugs for years.
• Place a rug pad between your rug and the floor. It will prevent slippage and act as a
buffer to minimize abrasion. This will extend the rug’s life and protect your floors. We
recommend our Premium Quality Rug Pad for all floor types.
• Always refer to care cards included with your rug for specific instructions.
• Vacuum or shake out rugs regularly. When vacuuming, pass over each area several
times from different directions. Avoid high-powered vacuum attachments, which can pull
threads away from the backing.
HOW TO PICK THE PERFECT RUG
• Rotate or reposition your rug every six months to avoid repetitive wear and to balance
any fading from light.
• Shedding is a normal trait for tufted and natural fiber rugs and diminishes over time.
Proper vacuuming and rotation will help reduce shedding.
• Blot spills with a clean, white cloth as soon as possible. Work from the outside edge
inward to prevent the spill from spreading.
• Do not dry-clean rugs. Harsh chemicals can damage the backing and cause the color to fade.
• Consult a professional rug cleaner for deep cleaning or spot removal.
• When storing rugs, roll with the pattern facing out. Wrap in a breathable cloth for
protection. Do not fold or put rugs in airtight bags. Keep stored rugs in a dry wellventilated place.
