2015 Paralympic Athlete Sponsorship Proposal What is R5-‐PARA? The concept of R5-‐PARA is to provide a framework to help people with a visual impairment to overcome the challenges forced upon them by eye disease. ‘R5’ encompasses five R’s that are essential for adapting to life altering vision loss and they are Resilient, Resourceful, Resolute, Robust, Resolve. The term ‘PARA’ is defined as ‘side-‐by-‐side’. R5-‐Para stands, literally or figuratively, side-‐by-‐side with others who face vision loss challenges to help and inspire them to adapt to their new and/or changing environment associated with vision loss. In our community engagement and our racing, R-‐5Para strives to demonstrate that everyone can fight vision loss ‘one pedal stroke at a time’. R5-‐Para’s Mission The mission of R5-‐Para Racing comprises three elements; 1. Raise consciousness through community engagement about adaptive sport channels that lead to lifelong health and wellness in those who are challenged (e.g. vision loss) 2. Continue to promote the positive nature of adaptive sports with local cycling clubs/teams on group charity and training rides (everyone loves drafting behind R5-‐Para Racing!) 3. Continue to build on our racing success at the local, regional, National Paralympic Cycling events with a goal of competing on the US Paralympics Cycling National Team. About R5-‐PARA Racing R5-‐PARA Racing is an elite level tandem cycling team. We race in Paralympic Cycling division National events as well as many local, regional events. Chester Triplett is a 35 year old Army Veteran, who lost his central vision due to a genetic eye disease, called Stargardts. Chester was honorably discharged in 2001 and now competes as a tandem cyclist. Reuben Howden is a 44 year old Professor at UNC Charlotte.
